Epic Road Trip Routes Starting from New Orleans: Hidden Gems Beyond the French Quarter

New Orleans makes an awesome starting point for road trips. Most people get stuck wandering around the French Quarter, but the really cool stuff happens when drivers actually leave the city and explore Louisiana’s crazy different landscapes and what’s waiting in nearby states.

The Great River Road: Following America’s Mighty Mississippi

The Great River Road goes on for 3,000 miles, but Louisiana’s chunk is probably the most interesting part. People start in New Orleans and follow the Mississippi north, cruising past old plantation land and sleepy towns that look exactly like they did 50 years ago.

Oak Alley Plantation is where everyone stops to take photos. Those massive oak trees form this incredible tunnel – some of them are 300 years old and create this green canopy that leads straight to the old mansion. It’s only about an hour from New Orleans, so lots of people make it a day trip.
