  • Pause to Evaluate: Is it a Cost or a Smart Investment?

Pause to Evaluate: Is it a Cost or a Smart Investment?

Focus is a fascinating and powerful thing when paired with the regular discipline of conscious reflection or review, it becomes a super-power for individuals and a potent performance-enhancer for teams.

Simply put, focus means that we see more of what we choose to pay attention to, and less of what we don’t.
I’ve been working ‘on-site’ with several different teams, attending some of their meetings and live-coaching them. I’ve also been asking lots of leaders about the last meeting they attended.
Doing this work and focusing on running great meetings myself has led me to notice an interesting, yet not entirely surprising, pattern.
    So, what’s the pattern?
Most people think that their meetings are ok but could be a lot better.
Perhaps the agenda wasn’t well defined, and it wasn’t shared in advance. Perhaps there was too much on the agenda and not enough time. Perhaps the team regularly veered off topic, a few people dominated the discussion, next steps weren’t all clear etc, etc.
The most significant thing that I’ve noticed though, is that nobody, even in senior leadership teams, tends to do much about it. Nobody actually takes accountability for making it better.
Perhaps that’s not surprising either. There is always so much to get done which means once we’re out of the room, we are understandably focused on the next task or meeting at hand.
But that means we continue to operate sub-optimally. We continue to waste unnecessary time and effort.

    Pausing to review

The alternative is to assign the last five minutes of your meeting for a review and debrief.
This is to review the process of the meeting. Not the content or output.
It’s about asking questions such as:

Was the agenda and timing realistic?
    Did we stay on topic?
    What worked well?
What must we focus on and do better next time we meet?

It’s a simple tactic that delivers a significant return on the time invested.
It’s also easier said than done. Embedding this as a new team protocol takes focus, effort and discipline.
But that’s exactly what is required to become a High-Performing Team. And as Jim Rohn once said:
“We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment.”

DON ‘THE DRAGON’ WILSON – 2015 INDUCTEE

Don “The Dragon” Wilson: A Kickboxing Legend Worth a Thousand Headshots

Born in the Midwest, Raised in Space Town

    • Where the stars actually shine brighter: Illinois, 1963 – the birthplace of a future world champion.
    • Career shift at Cape Canaveral: Dad landed an engineering gig at the Kennedy Space Center, pulling the family inland.
    • Education, because fate likes to be unpredictable: High school in Boca Raton → Coast Guard Academy → The art of karate.
    • Back to Brevard in ’73: Earned an A.A. in electrical engineering at Brevard Community College.
    • Ambition vs. reality: Planned to finish at Florida Institute of Technology – but hey, life had other plans.

From Beating Bouncers to Beating the Competition

    • The Brassy’s Nightclub era: Late ’80s, this venue turned into a kickboxing ring while the bouncers sat on the sidelines.
    • Don’s 11 fights at Brassy’s: A seven-year showcase of jaw‑dropping action.
    • Game-changing stats:
      • Full-Contact World Champion
      • Kickboxing Hall of Fame inductee
      • Conquered 11 world titles

Why Left the Office for the Octagon?

His dad’s engineering role settled the family in Brevard, but Don’s passion for martial arts was in the bank. When the Coast Guard Academy kicked in, karate became his first love, and by the time he returned home, it wasn’t just a hobby; it was a hungry dream. The world won’t waste a star if it can’t see the spark – and Don had the light.

    Heartfelt Takeaway

Don’s story reminds us that destiny is rarely a straight line. Between rockets and ropes, he carved a path that shocked the world. He proved you can start in an engineering classroom and finish inside a ring fueled by trunions, cheekbones, and sheer willpower.

Meet Don Wilson: The Kick‑Boxing King of Cocoa Beach

Don Wilson once stepped into the ring at Brassy’s Nightclub in Cocoa Beach, Florida, on June 22, 1987. He faced a hard‑hitting opponent, boxer Art Jimmerson, in a match that turned out to be more of a mixed‑fighting spectacle than a straight bout. That night, the legend proved why he’s a household name in the world of full‑contact fighting.

    From Kung‑Fu to the Ring

    • Don’s journey began in the backyard of his family home, where his brother trained him in kung‑fu.
    • With a fierce drive to convert those chops into a professional career, Don made the leap from martial arts training to the fighting arena.

    Florida‑Based Glory

Out of the first 39 fights in the 1970s and ‘80s, all took place across Florida—most nestled in its central corridor. By round 39, Dell had a record of 32 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw. Fans began calling him “the Florida one‑armed wonder,” but the reality was that his power was far from one‑armed.

    Title‑Hunting Champion

Don didn’t just win local bouts; he dominated titles at every level:

    • State, U.S., and world titles in the full‑contact middleweight division.
    • Full‑contact light‑heavyweight world title.
    • More than 11 world titles across various kickboxing sanctioning bodies.
    • His overall record? A dazzling 72 wins, 5 losses, 2 draws—a feat earned through sheer determination.

    A Legendary Showdown

One of Don’s most talked‑about contests came in May 1999. He squared off against professional heavyweight champ Dick Kimber for the cruiserweight world title. The bout was a thrilling display of skill, strategy, and raw power that left fans cheering for more.

Don Wilson’s story isn’t just one of punches and kicks—it’s a story of ambition, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of a dream that continues to inspire fighters worldwide.

Respected Four-Decade Officiating Veteran Ted Ruta Earns Induction into Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame

Ted Ruta: 40 Years of Officiating, One Big Hall‑of‑Fame Nod

Picture this: a morning in the Space Coast, fans, families, and a few former athletes gather for a ceremony that feels less like a formal event and more like a celebratory brunch. The star of the day? Ted Ruta, the officiating veteran who’s spent four decades keeping the sport fair, square, and a little entertaining.

Why Ted’s the Man of the Hour

    • Longevity: 40 years of ringside, courtside, and all the places that lie between.
    • Fairness on the field: Known for his perfect four‑eye reading of the game.
    • Mentor to many: Over the years he’s coached up-and-coming referees more than a thousand times.
    • Iconic moments: From the odd “wrong call” that sparked fan jokes to the “perfect split decision” that earned him the nickname “the Human Scale.”

Hot Off the Press: The Hall‑of‑Fame Induction

The Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame decided it was time to honor a man whose presence felt like “the third wheel” at any sporting event—always reliable, always in the background, yet always essential. When Ted stepped onto the stage, a wave of applause swept across the hall as if the fans remembered every game he’d officiated.

Some Memorable Highlights from Ted’s Career

    • Was the first official of the 2009 championship match that was later covered by international headlines.
    • Refereed over 120 championship games—and only once did his stopwatch random‑access by a minor glitch (small mishap, big laugh later).
    • Coached an aspiring referee who became a Top 5 nationwide coach.

And in that very moment, the crowd sang with a laugh when the announcer slipped over “At the end of the third round, Wilson came alive…”—remember those times when trivial statements sour the mood? Ted’s strong reaction to such slips instantly reminded listeners that even in a casual atmosphere, he had eyes on every move.

From Ring to Mic: Wilson’s Post‑Fight Journey

Now, if you’re thinking Ted is the only one with a story to tell, you’re not alone. Wilson, who feared a once‑glorious career in the ring, retired and took a move to the commentary booth for UFC.

    • During his nights at the booth, he joked about how he’d never thought an “explosion with a flurry” would terms people in the chatter—
    • While on the mic, he told everyone about a rumor for an upcoming UFC match that simply fell through—making it a perfect ‘what‑if’ story for the audience.
    • He’s the unofficial “talk show host” of the ring—bringing contrasts between the thunderous action and the need for calming numbers.

Wilson’s Take on Teasers and Taglines

Our correspondent had the classic tagline: “He’s been celebrated for his powerful commentary — but his plans for a UFC return? Nope, never getting it off the line.” Which in summary, the UFC world reverently salutes that the ring is often under the camera lens’s thick chemistry with a low‑key mic quote: “The moment when the ring paper is knocked flat, it takes a moment to stay at bay.”

Cheers to a Life of Sports

As Ted Ruta heads into the next chapter, we’re reminded that any profession isn’t easier on attention, but the sustained love for sport truly excites all of us—while Wilson’s observation, “Your gestures require a sin to break the field,” we’re grateful for the blogs. We’re thrilled for the ceremony that caught attention. And no doubt, the importance of mentorship, consistency, and enthusiasm for Hart’s last stage. Take care, Ted, and keep playing with honor!

The Dragon has also had roles – both acting and producing – in over 50 films, documentaries, videos, and television shows since the 1980s – including the cult classic – Bloodfist.

    Meet Don “The Dragon” Wilson

Think of him as the living, breathing action movie legend who’s kept the movie screens lit on and off for over four decades. Whether he’s jumping into roles, pulling the strings behind the camera, or dropping a storyline into less-talky documentaries, he’s been in more than 50 films, videos, and TV shows since the 1980s.

From Kickboxing Rings to Film Sets

    • Action/Drama: “Bloodfist” – where he played a wise dojo master on a quest for justice in the Philippines.
    • Documentaries that keep martial arts buffs hyped.
    • Short movies, commercials, indie shorts – the list goes on.

Off the Road, On the Track

Wilson didn’t just hit the big screen. He popped up in gigs that’d make any stunt guy proud. He produced, directed, and acted his way through films that would later earn cult status.

The Heist Incident that Made Headlines

Picture this: it’s a sunny afternoon at a Reno, Nevada martial arts event, and something bizarre unfolds. While the crowd was cheering, an elderly lady’s purse is snatched off the shoulder of a local.

Enter Don “The Dragon” Wilson. He ain’t a guy who just watches. He launched into action, snagging the purse‑snatcher and pinning him until the police showed up. Talk about a real‑life hero!

    The Legacy Still Makes Sense

These feats – the star roles and the real‑world heroics – cement Don Wilson’s place as one of the most respected figures in the kickboxing and action‑film world. His name might just stay on the shortest list of “real heroes” everyone’s in line for.

    Meet Don “The Dragon” Wilson

Don “The Dragon” Wilson is not just a name in the ring—he’s a legend who’s earned his stripes across the globe.

    What Makes Him Stand Out?

    • 11 world titles from top kickboxing bodies
    • Ridiculously strong record: 72 wins, 5 losses, 2 draws
    • Voted one of the most respected fighters in the sport

    Why Kickboxing Fans Love Him

With a balance of skill, swagger, and an unbreakable spirit, Don’s fights feel like a high‑energy roller coaster.

A Quick Glimpse at His Achievements
    1. First world title earned in the early ’90s
    2. Multiple reigns across different sanctioning groups
    3. Consistently landed punch‑right, keeping opponents on their toes

In short: Don “The Dragon” Wilson is a powerhouse whose record and reputation make him a towering figure in kickboxing history.

Meet Bryan Cook: From Rockledge Roots to Hall of Fame Glory

Picture a kid in Rockledge, juggling soccer balls and football dreams, but with a heart that belongs to baseball. That’s Bryan Cook—he started in the Little League dreamland of McClarty Park, and his journey, from local diamond dazzler to All‑American star at Nova Southeastern University, reads like a success story in dusty chalk.

In the backyard of life, he took up baseball first, and it never left his side. Most of his childhood friends were ballers too, so when the summer sun glowed on another field, it was a natural shift back to his first love.

Why First Base Is Still His Favorite Spot

As a left‑handed athlete with solid build, Bryan gravitated to first base. While he was a solid fielder—fielding cleanly and acting like a seasoned ace—his real MVP power lay in his bat. He’s been a champion from the playground to the college field, leaving a trail of wins and comic‑relief moments.

    Ready to Roll the Gavel?

If you ever dreamed of witnessing a local legend make history, the Hall’s ready to turn the page with a ceremony that’s more than just glitter and speeches. It’s a celebration of community, talent, and the subtle humor that kicks an unlikely future champion into the spotlight.

From Little League to Hall of Fame: Bryan Cook’s Baseball Journey

Remember that kid from Rockledge Little League who could make a baseball fade into the sweet spot of a glove? That kid is now a legend in the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame.

Early Days: The Little League Hero

    • Multiple All‑Star Teams – Bryan never just stuck around; he looped through a bunch of All‑Star squads, tasty icing on his early career.
    • High School Glory – His senior year at Rockledge High was a boot‑shin triumph: the Raiders clinched the state championship with a squad packed with talent.

He talks about that 2004 squad when he rants, “We had a lot of talent.” But he’s first to admit the team “underperformed” before they finally clicked. The truth? The Raiders hit their stride at the perfect moment, bagged the district title, and then smashed the state crown.

    College: From Challenge to Champion

After high school, Bryson’s journey took a detour through Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida. College ball was a bit of a curveball – it made him swear “I gotta get better.” The summer after his freshman year, he made a promise to himself: commit, grind, improve.

    The Nova Era

    • Transfer: Nova Southeastern University – last two glorious years had him on fire.
    • Perfection on Paper – 0.408 batting average.
    • Slugging at a jaw‑dropping 0.771.
    • Home‑run Medal: 30 – second place all‑time for the Sharks.

It’s clear that from a Little League kid to the final honoree, Bryan Cook didn’t just play baseball – he made the game his own, each swing shouting, “I’m here for the win!” His unbreakable spirit and killer stats cement his place in the annals of Florida baseball history.

Bryan Cook: A Legend in Florida Baseball

Rockledge High School – The Cowboy’s Early Days

Back in his senior year at Rockledge High School, Bryan Cook helped the Raiders clinch a state championship. Even before he hit the majors, it was clear he was destined for greatness.

Accolades That Made the Hall of Fame Dream Realizable

    • 2008 All‑American – A title that says a lot about his talent.
    • Two‑time first‑team Sunshine State Conference (SSC) player – Consistency at its finest.
    • SSC Player of the Year (2008) – The cream of the crop.
    • ABCA/Rawlings South Region Player of the Year (2008) – The region’s top.
    • NSU Scholar Athlete of the Year (2008) – Outclassing even non‑baseball athletes.

When asked about that scholar award, Cook’s eyes lit up. “I’m very proud of that award,” he says with a grin. He’s never one to ignore the importance of a good grade, shouting, “Having bad grades was never an option!” – a reminder that dedication happens both on the field and in the classroom.

2016: First‑Ever NSU Student‑Athlete Hall of Fame Inductee

Sixteen years later, Cook got a monumental nod: election to the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame. The first NSU student‑athlete to earn the honor, he surprised the crowd when asked what popped into his head upon hearing the news.

He signed off with a grin: “I had to pinch myself; it’s a great honor.”

Why the Hall of Fame Feels Special

While people still talk about his stats, the true story lies in his humility and love for the game. He never bragged; instead, his quiet confidence left a lasting mark on everyone who watched him play.

From Little League to the Hall of Fame: Bryan Cook’s Baseball Odyssey

Bryan Cook wasn’t just another kid with a glove – from the dusty bases of Rockledge Little League to the elite field at Nova Southeast University, his baseball story reads like a slam‑dunk narrative.

    Key Milestones in Quick‑Hit Highlights

    • Rockledge Little League – Early days of swingin’ and grinnin’.
    • All‑American Glory – Dominating the WAR field at Nova Southeast.
    • Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame – Class of 2021, forever etched in the stars.

    Impact that Still Resounds

Every time Bryan stepped onto the plate or dashed between the diamond’s grooves, the crowd felt that electric surge – a real game‑changer who left the competition in the dust.

It’s simple: “He’s the real MVP of the Space Coast,” fans chant as he takes center stage, and even the critics can’t help but sit up and notice.

Bryan Cook: From Little League Dreams to Hall‑of‑Fame Reality

Picture a kid swinging a bat in the gentle breezes of Rockledge, Florida, his grin as wide as the summer sky. That kid was Bryan Cook, the Class of 2021 Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame inductee who turned every pitch into a promise.

Early Years: The Little League Legend

    • Started playing baseball in Rockledge Little League, proving that talent can bloom in unexpected places.
    • Known for a fearless swing and a laugh that echoed through the batting cages.
    • Already a crowd‑pleaser — fans would grab a handful of popcorn and cheer, because Bryan’s hit‑by‑hit had a charm that couldn’t be ignored.

    College Glory: The All‑American Journey

Fast‑forward to his days at Nova Southeast University. Here, Bryan not only kept his batting average soaring, but also earned the title of All‑American — a testament to his relentless work ethic and natural flair. Picture him standing on the field, bat poised, and a teammate whispering, “We’ve got this!” The crowd’s roar beneath it was the soundtrack to his burgeoning legacy.

A Legacy That Tells a Story

    • Impact player: his presence elevated teammates and game dynamics alike.
    • Exceptional talent: stats that outshine, and a personality that endears.
    • Hall of Fame inductee: a milestone that crowns a journey built on passion, grit, and a dash of sunshine.

From the dusty lanes of Rockledge to the bright lights of the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame, Bryan Cook’s path reminds us that greatness starts with a single swing, a spark, and an unbreakable resolve to keep playing.
