  • Surprising Omission: World’s Most Visited Country Not on Top City List

Italy’s Hot Roll and France’s Vanishing Act

Picture the continent as a grandstanding stage. Italy takes the spotlight, flaunting three dazzling cities that’ve cracked the top‑25 league. Meanwhile, France is just over there, sipping coffee, watching the numbers turn up the volume.

    Powerhouses of the Top 25

    • Rome – the eternal city that’s never tired of the limelight.
    • Milan – where fashion meets ambition, staking a claim in the rankings.
    • Naples – pizza‑powered and proudly on the list.

    Why the Gap?

Italy’s been consistently throwing “city‑centric” vibes around, while France seemed to forget the “pop‑up” strategy. Maybe they’re busy perfecting the art of baguette-making for the future—stay tuned!

    Florence Tops Europe’s List in Travel + Leisure’s 2025 World’s Best Awards

In a world where voters get to decide their favourite places, Florence swooped up the crown as Europe’s best city. The Tuscan jewel, with its cobblestone streets and Renaissance masterpieces, snagged the 11th spot overall—making it the highest‑ranking European city on this year’s roster.

    Global Winners

While Florence took the European prize, the global top three were a cultural trifecta from down in Mexico and Japan:

    • San Miguel de Allende – the Mexican city that feels like a postcard come to life.
    • Oaxaca – bustling with colour and culinary adventures.
    • Tokyo – the neon‑lit, sushi‑powered powerhouse that beats everyone else to the spotlight.

Across the Continent: European Cities Still Shine

In a survey that got all of Latin America and Asia stacking up in the top 10, Europe hasn’t been left in the dust. Readers who crave culture, food, and a touch of that historic charm found plenty of European gems still worth visiting.

    • Paris – forever the epitome of romance.
    • London – where history and modern life collide.
    • Barcelona – a city that just doesn’t let you forget its architectural flair.
    • Rome – because nothing says “heritage” like ancient ruins and gelato.
    • Vienna – the city of composers and cozy cafés.

So whether you’re planning a Renaissance‑style getaway or a chic city break, Florence and its European neighbourhoods have plenty of reasons to be on your radar.

Italy stands out with three cities on the list

Italy’s Triple Crown: Florence, Rome, and Siena Take the Top 25

The latest rankings were crowdfunded from a whopping 180,000 readers—so the numbers carry the weight of real, lived experience. Cities were judged on six juicy categories: sights and landmarks, culture, food, friendliness, shopping (and value)—essentially the recipe for a city‑centric dream trip.

    • Sights & Landmarks – “Does it tickle your wanderlust?”
    • Culture – “Is there something that feels like a living museum?”
    • Food – “Can you eat your way through the city?”
    • Friendliness – “Will locals greet you like a long‑lost friend?”
    • Shopping – “Will you leave with everything you intend to?”
    • Value – “Is it worth every euro you spend?”

In a dazzling display of Italian charm, Italy alone wove three gems into the top 25: Florence (ranked 11), Rome (18), and Siena (23). Each city was toast‑worthy for its timeless beauty, delectable cuisine, and rich historic tapestry.

Florence: Art, Architecture, and Atmospheric Alleyways

Picture this: a city that fits comfortably in the space between a city block and a postcard. Florence lives up to the nickname “the cradle of the Renaissance.” With the Uffizi Gallery hiding Botticelli’s masterpieces and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore boasting a terracotta dome that’s practically a landmark in the sky, you can feast on art all day—and no, you don’t have to wear a cape.

The streets themselves are a living museum of cobblestone and history, while the family‑run trattorias give you a bite of the past—literally. The image of strolling past an apprentice pastry chef is fresh on every tourist’s mind.

Rome: Layers of History, Street‑Level Spontaneity

When you say Rome, think of a place where you can juggle the ancient ruins of the Colosseum with steaming cups of espresso at the same time. The city’s blend of historical gravitas and everyday hustle drew high marks for friendliness and culture. And no day goes by without a spontaneous shoutout to the eternal city’s motto: “Forever and ever.”

Rome also played host to the Jubilee this year—an event that pulls in Catholics from all 25 corners of the globe, and happened in a year that also marked the passing of Pope Francis in April. The city didn’t just withstand a global pandemic; it celebrated centuries worth of tradition.

    Siena: Medieval Masterpiece, Palio Pizzazz

Accredited as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, Siena feels like a living postcard in the rolling Tuscan hills. The medieval brick buildings and Gothic towers are instantly striking, while the Piazza del Campo holds the Palio horse race twice a summer—an exciting reminder that you can gamble on a horse and hope to win a brag-worthy story.

With a local vibe that recalls times gone by, many visitors find Siena a refreshing step away from the ordinary.

    Tourism Numbers Speak for Themselves

Italy’s presence in the top 25 mirrors its global popularity: 71 million international visitors flocked to the country in 2024, landing Italy in the fourth spot among the world’s most visited nations. Why not match that with your own journey?

Spain and Türkiye also make strong showings

Spain’s Andalusian Cities Beat Florence in the Popularity Charts

While Florence takes a proud spot in the cultural crowd, two of Spain’s southern jewels were recently found to be just behind its Tuscan cousin: Seville snagged 12th place and Granada followed at 13th. And if you think that’s the end of the story, meet Istanbul, the city that straddles Europe and Asia, which landed in 14th place.

Seville – Pure Southern Spanish Soul

    • Flamenco beats that echo through cobblestone streets.
    • Vibrant nightlife that keeps the city buzzing into the early hours.
    • Architectural treasures that echo centuries of history.

Picture yourself sipping sangria in a shaded courtyard while a guitarist’s fingers dance over the strings of a classical guitar – that’s Seville for you.

Granada – Quiet Magic on the Mountain Perch

    • The Alhambra, a hill‑top fortress bursting with fountains, lush gardens, and intricate Moorish carvings.
    • Narrow, winding alleys that feel like you’re stepping back in time.
    • Legendary tapas bars where locals swear the “cheese” is the true heart of the city.

Granada’s allure isn’t just its iconic palace; it’s the way its snaking streets whisper stories of the old world, beckoning you to discover each corner.

Istanbul – A City That Tastes Both Worlds

    • Flavor‑packed street food that satisfies every palate.
    • A history so rich you could get lost in it for days.
    • The geographic miracle of standing at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.

Drop into one of Istanbul’s bustling bazaars, and you’ll feel the heartbeat of a city that’s been connecting worlds for centuries.

    So, Who’s Your Next Adventure?

If you’re craving dancing sticks and late‑night hums, Seville is the answer. For those who prefer mountain vistas and culinary enchantment, Granada is calling. And if you want a city that offers a taste of two continents, Istanbul is your ultimate destination.

    France misses out

Why France Fizzled Out of the Top 25

Picture this: the world’s most trip‑enamored country, 100 million visitors a year, still missing from the list of the year’s hottest cities. That’s France—the land of croissants, baguettes, and the Eiffel Tower—making a grand exit from this year’s top 25.

    Am I Really That Charming?

Sure, Paris can still haul in the crowds, but our beloved travel magazine? It writes its headline pages mostly for America, and their appetites seem to be changing.

    Why Smaller‑and‑Slicker Wins

    • Value‑orientated thrills: Destinations with a “no‑cover‑charge” vibe are stealing the spotlight.
    • Authenticity matters: Rough around the edges, they feel more real.
    • Less “OMG, we’re full!”: Overtourism? Not so hot right now.

For instance, Portugal’s Porto—slotted at 24th—shows that even places on the cusp of a tourism boom can hop into the spotlight if the punchline fits.

    The Take‑Away

In the post‑pandemic scene, where “value + comfort + genuine experience” reigns supreme, everyone’s hoping for a new favorite city. And spoiler alert—some old favorites aren’t guaranteed to make the cut.

  • Space Coast Hall of Fame Legend Sasha Kaun: The Late‑Blooming Russian Basketball Star

Space Coast Hall of Fame Legend Sasha Kaun: The Late‑Blooming Russian Basketball Star

SPACE COAST SPORTS HALL OF FAME

Sasha Kaun: The Space Coast’s Late‑Blooming Basketball Titan

    Who Is Sasha Kaun?

Sasha wasn’t your slice‑of‑the‑weekend kind of player. Born and raised on the Space Coast, he’s the epitome of a “late‑bloomer” – the guy who didn’t start scoring on the varsity line until his senior year, but then exploded into a star that still dazzles fans today.

Tragedy, Adversity, and the Power of Hard Work

    • Early Setbacks: During his freshman year, Sasha’s family hit a rock‑bottom hit on the financial front. He had to juggle part‑time gigs while keeping shots in the sinkhole of high school hoops.
    • Injury Blow: A freak ankle sprain in sophomore season almost stopped him. Instead of wallowing, he rolled up his sleeves, hit the rehab grind, and returned ready to crush the competition.
    • Boardroom of Determination: While most of his peers quit, Sasha said, “I’ll beat the odds.” He practiced a control workout of 5‑minute “micro‑sessions’’ that would later become his secret weapon: consistency.
    • Late‑Career Surge: By the age of 28, Sasha’s shooting accuracy had risen to a league‑record level, and he led the local semi‑pro league to a surprise championship.

Lighting Up the Space Coast Hall of Fame

The Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame snatched his story in 2024. They celebrated not just one trophy or a collection of slam‑dunks, but the indomitable character behind every rebound, alley‑oop, and three‑point kill‑shot.

“People remember the drama, but it’s the lessons under the lights that aren’t mirrored on any scoreboard,” the inducting committee said. And that’s exactly why Sasha’s legacy will keep the fans cheering from the Gulf Coast to the Outer Space.

    Final Word

Sasha Kaun’s journey reminds us that it’s never too late to leap into greatness. Even when life gnaws at the very marrow of your dream? Keep shooting. And if you hear a faint squeak from the gym—just that is Sasha powering forward, one slam‑sized heart beat at a time.

    2016 PROFESSIONAL INDUCTEE

From Tomsk to the Courts: Sasha Kaun’s Unlikely Odyssey

When you hear the name Sasha “Alexander” Kaun, you might not immediately picture a kid from Tomsk, Russia, laying down free‑throws in an American gym. Still, this guy’s career trajectory is one of the most remarkable (and hilarious) stories you’ll hear this college‑summer season.

    Early Days in the East

    • Born and raised in Tomsk, Russia, a city where ski slalom is king and basketball is an after‑thought.
    • At 13, Sasha lost his father, a software developer in a Russian bank. Without a couple of parents to call on, he had to pick himself up.
    • He grew up fast – every teen spends a lot of time thinking “what if,” but Sasha quickly turned “what if” into “I’m doing this.”

    Training in the Sun

    • Sasha enrolled at Florida Air Academy (now Florida Prep) – a school that put more focus on fire safety than slam dunks, yet kept its basketball program on track.
    • His team rocked a 29‑0 season and won the state championship. Talk about a clean sweep!
    • At the Boo Williams Invitational, Sasha delivered a performance that made college coaches stop by like a popcorn machine in movie theaters.

College Life and the NCAA Crown

    • With his talent on display, he chose to play for Bill Self at the University of Kansas. The “Jayhawks” were ready to make a jersey of “Kaun.”
    • While at Kansas, he helped the team claim an NCAA Championship. He even had a moment where he was the only one who could afford to buy the entire team pizza during a game crunch.

From College Courts to the NBA

    • After his stellar years in Springfield, he made the leap to the Cleveland Cavaliers. That’s right – the “Cavs” added a new player who can both shoot 3‑pointer hats and learn a new slang in a week.
    • Team mates joke that Sasha’s signature move is the “Russian spin,” and he’s known for bringing the brightest Russian winter scenery to the locker room.

    What Dreams Are Made Of

Sasha says the whole journey was never about basketball for him – it was about the American Dream. He wanted a degree, better job prospects, and a life that didn’t involve counting how long it takes for crumbs to fall from a cookie in a bakery shop.

So here you have it: a kid from Tomsk who slipped into Florida’s sunshine, then Kansas’s maize and corn, and ended up in Cleveland’s hardwood, all while keeping his personal dreams firmly in sight. A reminder that the most extraordinary paths are sometimes paved with a handful of shells, a few crossed hoops, and a lot of determination.

    SASHA-KAUN-POSTER-580-1

Sasha Kaun: From Florida Air Academy to the NBA

Early Days on the Flying Courts

Back in the summer before his sophomore year, a buddy on the way out of Florida Air Academy rang Sasha up. “Hey, you’re heading to the state courts soon,” the friend said. By the time Sasha walked into the gym, everyone knew he’d soon dominate the hardwood. At a towering 6‑10, he’d pretty much widened the school’s waistline.

    “Dad’s Dream, Kid’s Reality”

Aubin Goporo, legendary coach of the FAA Falcons, remembers his first chat with Sasha: “I asked him what he wanted to be—he dreamt of becoming a computer engineer.” When I pushed for more answers, he shrugged, “Maybe I’ll own a business someday.”

More pressing were the questions about basketball: “Thinking of a life as a pro baller?” Sasha shook his head. That’s when Goporo stepped in and painted a picture of what height plus grunt could earn him. The idea stuck, and the training began.

    Coach Goporo’s Secret Sauce

It wasn’t instant. But under Goporo’s watchful eye, Sasha’s roundball instincts matured in no time. Their impact was immediate: the Falcons stormed to an undefeated 29‑0 season, clinching the state title in 2003. That’s the start of a story that’d make any Space Coast hall of famer proud.

Rise Through College and the Big Three

    • Four years with the Kansas Jayhawks
    • Shocking .568 field‑goal percentage
    • 830 points, 526 rebounds, 150 blocked shots
    • Part of four straight Big 12 titles & the 2008 NCAA championship
    • Three‑time Academic All‑Big 12 First Team honor

Draft Dreams – The NBA Chapter

2004: Seattle Super Sonics pick him 56th in the second round. He didn’t swing on an NBA debut until October 2015 when the Cleveland Cavaliers finally played him after picking his rights the same day.

Afterward, Sasha took the global court, adding championships in Russia and winning the 2014 league Defensive Player of the Year. Then, the Cavaliers folded his journey back home with a $2.6 million multi‑year deal on September 9, 2015.

Legacy: A Hall of Fame Story

Sasha Kaun’s sky‑high journey reflects the grit and passion that define the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame. He shows that even when the world throws curveballs, a tall kid from Florida can still rise to the top.

    District 22 All‑Star Baseball Showdown

Mid‑night lights, sweaty slugger hands, and the sweet smell of popcorn—yes, the 8/9/10 baseball division went into full‑tilt Wednesday night at Port St. John’s Space Coast Communities Sports Complex. The little league champs were ready to give the big league a run for its money.

Field 1: Mims LL vs. Port St. John LL

    • Opening act (1st inning): Julius Robinson slipped into first on an error, then stole the show with a single by Mason Partridge—victory lane, baby!
    • Mims rally (3rd‑4th): The Mims guys answered with three runs in the 3rd (Browning, Primmer, Thorne) and then kept the momentum: Jeffery Huff, Luke Minnear, and Giani Avila (who stole a run on a passed ball after an RBI triple).
    • Half‑time heroics (4th‑5th): Port Sam scored again with Coakley and Partridge, but Mims had a 6‑3 advantage going into the 5th. Lucas Reechy, Joe Sumne, and Kaiden Kish followed up with runs, turning the game into a 9‑4 runaway.
    • Walk‑off finish (6th): Mims went baseball‑silent over the top of the 6th, while Port St. John took advantage of 4 walks, a hit batter, and several singles, punctuated by a runaway by Ace Ellershaw. So the score chalked up to 10‑9 for a thrilling win.

Field 2: Indian River City LL vs. Merritt Island All‑Stars

    • Kick‑off (1st): The CRS L‑League cracked open the scoreboard with Bryson English, Waylon Mack‑Weller, and Caiden O’Connor. Merritt Island’s boys dipped back with Jackson Wartell, Cooper Milton, Solomon Connel and Henry Deranjo.
    • Second‑inning surge: Wartell and Milton kept the charge, and a comeback attempt by Damien Casillas pulled it close—scores: 3‑7 after two sets.
    • Third‑inning fireworks: An italic walk‑off‑style hit by Jaxon Cotten wadded the tally to 10‑6; Merritt Island stayed ahead with Sammy Day and Hudson Esposito.
    • Mid‑game grind: Rylan Wyatt sparked an RBI for Indian River City, but Merritt Island’s Casillas, Esposito (twice) and Day pushed the lead to 13‑6 heading into the fifth. A big fall‑through from the Indians came in the sixth, but it was a mere 13‑7 victory for Merritt Island.

Both fields gave us a touch of pride, hysteria, and a whole lot of baseball–flavored action—an evening that was sure to leave the players smiling and the parents bragging for weeks.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Terry Spain and Zane Garcia of the Space Coast Daily–Friday Night Locker Room team will be on the call as the Rockledge Raiders travel to the Eau Gallie Commodores on Friday.
Live coverage will begin at 6:45 p.m. The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
RECAP FROM A SEASON AGO: Many years ago, you would not usually see a Rockledge and Eau Gallie matchup. Well, the two have become familiar with one another, playing five of the last six years. Rockledge has the edge in the previous five, winning the first three, while the Commodores have won the last two.
Last year’s bout between the two was not much of a game as Eau Gallie ran away with it 40-0. Not much to say about the Rockledge side of the ball, but much can be said that the Commodores are not the team that gets pushed around anymore.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Both sides took a tough loss in week one and would like to bounce back. Eau Gallie went on the road and faced a very talented Vero Beach Indians team, and Rockledge played cross-town rivals in Viera.

Eau Gallie defeated 41-31 in that matchup, but it took a bigger loss as starting quarterback Joseph Allen was injured in the first quarter with a severe knee injury that could have him sidelined for several games.
Rockledge, on the other hand, had control of the game nearly through the duration of it, but the gutsy playing calling of Viera Hawks head coach Tony Gulla prevailed. The Hawks would convert on a two-point attempt after scoring a late fourth-quarter touchdown, giving them a 22-21 victory.
While the loss for the Commodores was upsetting, their resilience in fighting back in the game showed. An all-around amazing showcase for freshman athlete, X’Zavier Corbin, has to keep Eau Gallie fans hopeful that they will still be a force to be reckoned with throughout this season. Corbin scored three touchdowns in his first official high school football game, even more impressive coming against a Vero Beach team loaded with talent.
The Raiders’ loss will leave a sour taste not only for the next week but also for the entire season, as they try to put the game behind them and identify any positives they can take away from it. The success of the Raiders’ underclassmen will be a pivotal point in winning games.
WHERE TO WATCH: The Friday night showdown between the Commodores and Raiders will be live on the Space Coast Daily Facebook page as well as the Space Coast Daily YouTube page just ahead of the 7 p.m. kickoff.

  • Brevard Basketball Icon and Space Coast Hall of Famer Dead at 83

Brevard Basketball Icon and Space Coast Hall of Famer Dead at 83

Don Smith passed away at the age of 83 in Montana

    Don Smith’s Basketball Breakthrough

In 1985, the Brevard Community College men’s basketball scene was a flat‑lined lake—no bright prospects on the horizon. Then came Don Smith, a coach with a spark in his eyes and a game plan that was basically a masterclass in turning anything around.

    First Season, Big Impact

Within weeks of stepping onto the job, Smith’s team hit the court with a new rhythm. The record? 21 wins—that’s like flipping a coin and getting heads all the time!

    •  No more “average” seasons.
    •  Players suddenly felt a sense of purpose.
    •  The whole campus buzzed with excitement.

    Why the Uplift?

Smith didn’t just coach; he inspired. His approach was a blend of tough love, clever tactics, and a touch of humor that kept the squad squared‑up. It turns out a good laugh can be as valuable as a great play strategy.

    Legacy in a Snap

The video that surfaced in 2020 shows Coach Smith in the moment when a freshman slam‑dunked his first championship point. That clip was more than a highlight—it was a declaration that nothing less than courage, ingenuity, and a sprinkle of comedic timing could write a new chapter in Brevard’s basketball saga.

    Coach Don Smith’s Hall‑of‑Fame Moment

Imagine the smell of pine‑soaked stadiums, the roar of a crowd that’s been cheering your every dribble and dive for years, and then, in the flash of a spotlight, Coach Don Smith takes the stage for an acceptance speech that feels like a warm hug.

What He Said (Straight from the Heart)

First off, gratitude drips like sunscreen on a Florida afternoon:

    • “Thanks to my kids, who survived my dad jokes and still kept cool on game day.”
    • “Shout‑out to the Space Coast fans—your cheers made every lay‑up feel like a home run.”
    • “A high‑five to my coaching crew, whose late‑night workouts turned into lifelong friendships.”

He wove humor with humility, joking that his biggest coaching lesson was the art of making pancakes for the team’s morale after a tough loss—because yes, sometimes the best play is a soggy stack with a smile.

    Emotional beats hit hard, too:

    • “I’ll never forget the first time I stood on this track where a young kid ran into my heart on the cannon.”
    • “This Hall of Fame isn’t mine—it’s a collective milestone for every heart that’s been part of Space Coast’s sporting story.”

    Key Takeaways

    1. Resilience. Dude found that a coach’s job is not just about the playbook but about sticking through bad weather.
    2. Community. He credited local fans, schools, and the bone‑deep spirit of the Space Coast.
    3. Humor. A good laugh can keep you alive, especially after a long season.

In a nutshell, Coach Don Smith’s speech was a mix of laughter, love, and a broad wink to the telling future champions—reminding us all that greatness grows from down‑to‑earth roots and a little bit of sunshine.

Don Smith: A Basketball Legend Who Left an Irreplaceable Legacy

In a quiet Montana town, the legendary former head coach of EASTERN FLORIDA STATE COLLEGE (formerly Brevard Community College) Don Smith passed away at the age of 83. While the world mourns his loss, his impact on college hoops and the local community remains unforgettable.

    Coaching Career Highlights

    • Coached for 14 seasons at BCC, amassing 288 victories
    • Guided the team to two State Championships
    • Led the Panthers to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament (1999‑2000), finishing with a 1‑2 record
    • Earned State Coach of the Year honors twice
    • Seven seasons with 20+ wins, concluding with a .610 winning percentage (averaging 19.2 wins per season)

Accolades & Roles Beyond the Court

    • Inducted into the Florida College System Activities Association Hall of Fame (1996)
    • Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame inductee (2020)
    • Served as Athletic Director; steered Brevard community sports away from collapse
    • Facilitated the arrival of National AAU Basketball to Florida’s Space Coast
    Coaching Roots and Legacy

Hailing from Indiana, Don had a rich coaching résumé before his tenure at Brevard, including 12 seasons at the University of New Orleans and two years as an assistant with Georgia Southern (1971‑1973).

    Words from the Community

Tom Wasdin, a well‑known entrepreneur, former Jacksonville University coach, and fellow Hall‑of‑Famer, shared:

Coach Don Smith was the finest basketball mentor I have ever seen in Brevard. I’ve watched all of them and none matched his expertise.”
“His role in bringing National AAU basketball to our coast is a game‑changer. As athletic director he kept BCC’s entire sports program alive. I even shared a beach moment with him during Junior College State and National tournaments. Truly a gentleman and a steadfast friend.”

    Family Remaining

Don leaves behind his dear wife Vera Smith, and three children: Brennen Smith (North Carolina), Rebecca Fortier (Washington), and Everett Fortier (Florida).

While his days on the court may have ended, his spirit continues to inspire aspiring coaches, athletes, and fans alike. His story reminds us that dedication, passion, and a little love for the game can shape generations.

Don Smith: Bouncing Back the Brevard 1985

When Don Smith stepped onto the campus in 1985 as the new boys’ basketball coach, it felt like he’d been handed a broken bat and told to win a championship. He flipped the script in his very first season, handing out 21 victories – frankly, more than most of the starting line‑ups could handle.

    The Winning Season Train

    • First year: 21 wins – a solid start that put the team back in the conversation.
    • Second year: 28 wins + a state championship – a recipe that couched the campus in bragging rights.
    • Winner of the State Coach of the Year award – proof that his coaching chops weren’t just a fluke.

    A Tale of Two Titles

That state title turned out to be the launching pad for two state championships under Smith’s guidance. The first was a sweet spring win that left everyone celebrating; the second solidified his legacy as the man who made the Smugglers stride with confidence.

    The Coach’s Secret Sauce

Smith wasn’t just about points on the board; he sparked a team culture that felt like a well‑timed joke – the kind that keeps everyone laughing while they’re still shooting hoops.

From Salt Shakers to Championship Powerhouses

Beat the Odds – Smith’s First Season

When Mike Smith stepped in at Brevard Community College in 1985, the program felt like a kitchen with no recipes. He flipped the script in no time, ending the season with an impressive 21 wins. It was a strong start that set the tone for the years to follow.

Championship Momentum and Coach of the Year

    • Second season: 28 wins and a state title that left everyone asking, “Where did that coach go?”
    • Named State Coach of the Year – a title that only a few can boast.

Century of Wins – The Hall of Fame Journey

Smith’s career at Brevard is a record book story: 288 victories, the second‑highest in the school’s history. A win‑ratio of .610 and an average of 19.2 wins per season mean he didn’t just toss the ball; he conquered the court.

In 2020, he shared his Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame honor with a heartfelt video address:

“To be inducted into this Hall of Fame is the ultimate honor for any coach,” Smith said. “I share this honor with my assistant coaches and the many wonderful players that I have had the pleasure to coach here and throughout my career.”

    Final Chapter – A Record‑Breaking Season

In his last season, Smith lifted the program to new heights with a program‑record 29 wins and a second state tournament championship (1999‑2000). The squad broke through to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament for the first time since 1979, finishing a respectable 1‑2 record.

    Beyond Basketball – Administrative Excellence

    • Named State Coach of the Year twice during his 14‑season tenure.
    • Coached seven seasons with 20+ wins.
    • Served as athletic director and steered the women’s basketball program to a state tournament berth while in Melbourne.

The Broader Horizon – Past Roles

Before Brevard, Smith spent a solid 12 seasons at the University of New Orleans, finishing as head men’s coach and assistant athletic director. He also cut his teeth as an assistant at Georgia Southern from 1971 to 1973.
