Tesla is seeking permits to offer ride-hail services at Silicon Valley airports

Tesla has asked the San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland airports about acquiring permits to operate a ride-hailing service at each location, according to Politico.

Tesla appears to have contacted each airport right around the time it started up a nascent charter service in California in late July. In the case of the San Francisco and Oakland airports, representatives told the outlet that they had been contacted but had yet to meet with Tesla. The San Jose airport spokesperson confirmed no application for a permit had been filed and that Tesla had asked about the permit process.

Tesla currently lacks the proper permits to run a true ride-hail service, let alone a robotaxi network, in California. Instead, it’s operating a more limited charter service. Those are not supposed to involve any autonomous vehicle operations, though videos of the rides have shown that the company’s drivers are using its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software on the rides being offered. Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) is an advanced driver-assistance system with some automated driving features that requires the driver to pay attention.

In order to spin up a larger ride-hail service in California, Tesla will need a permit from the California Public Utilities Commission. And if the fleet is composed of autonomous vehicles, it will also need permits from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The California DMV is currently trying to stop Tesla from selling vehicles in the state because it believes the company has made far-too-aggressive promises about its cars’ self-driving abilities.

Airports are often picky when it comes to allowing new transportation services. A decade ago, they were a battleground for Uber and Lyft, companies that were trying to edge in on the business of traditional taxis and limousine services.

In recent years, airports have become a target of budding autonomous vehicle services.

Airports are popular targets because they represent a huge business opportunity; Waymo says the Phoenix airport is its most popular destination in the city.

Tesla began testing the first version of its invite-only robotaxi network in Austin, Texas, with around a dozen cars. It has expanded that network’s boundaries to cover much of the greater Austin area, though the company still appears to have just around 20 to 30 cars in operation and has moved the “safety monitor” to the drivers’ seat.

Texas does not require as much transparency as California does when it comes to testing autonomous vehicles, so it’s difficult to say how well it’s gone for the company. There have been a number of documented problems, though no major crashes or other incidents.

The Mustangs had a strong 23-6 season a year ago, but fell in the Regional Finals to Bishop Moore (eventual state champions). This season the Mustangs have started well posting a 7-2 record and currently sit at No. 13 in the state. The goal for Merritt Island is clear, make it back to the Regional Final and finish what they could not a year ago.
The Mustangs are led offensively by Ema Michell with 3 kills a game, Senior Sarah Niazi helping provide for those kills with nearly 4 digs a game herself.
The Mustangs are ready to take the court after playing a three game tournament this past Saturday.
Merritt Island has some big ones coming up after tonight, Viera tomorrow (September 4), at Cocoa Beach (September 9), and at Holy Trinity (September 15).

Bayside a year ago went 17-10 and made it to the Regional Finals. They were led by the 2024 breakfast of champions volleyball player of the year Jasmine Calton (now at Mercer). This team has been a rough stretch lately and wants to get a big win tonight over an ultra talented Merritt Island Mustangs squad. Currently at 4-7 the Bears are looking to turn their fortunes around.
Seniors for the Bears, Shamora Scott and JaNay McLin have been the key pieces on offense and defense respectively for Bayside. They also have a lot of younger talent on this team and will be needing contributions from the underclassmen as well.

'Forever chemicals’ found in reusable period products. What do we know about their health impact?

Underwear and reusable pads show the highest levels of a marker indicating intentionally added PFAS, raising concerns about the safety of menstrual products, according to new research.

Reusable women’s hygiene products can contain toxic chemicals, according to a study published last week that tested items from North America, South America, and Europe.
Published in Environmental Science and Technology Letters, the peer-reviewed article specifically found evidence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) substances in eco-friendly menstrual and incontinence products, reviving the debate about the safety and health effects of feminine hygiene items.

PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” consist of a large group of man-made substances with exceptional resistance to degradation. For more than 70 years, they have been added to various consumer products, among others, to enhance resistance to water, grease, and stains.

The research team tested 59 products from five categories: period underwear, reusable pads, reusable incontinence underwear, reusable incontinence pads, and menstrual cups.
To assess PFAS presence, scientists measured the total fluorine content, a chemical element whose elevated levels typically suggest the likely presence of ‘forever chemicals’. They then extracted a smaller subset of 19 products and conducted a more in-depth analysis, targeting the levels of specific PFAS.
PFAS were detected in 100 per cent of the smaller sample of 19 products. Evidence of intentionally added PFAS was found in nearly 30 per cent of the full group of 59 products, with period underwear and reusable pads showing the highest rates.

Marta Venier, one of the study’s authors and an environmental chemist at Indiana University, explained that the distinction between intentional and unintentional PFAS presence depends on the amount of total fluorine detected.
“When levels were above a certain threshold, that indicates that PFAS were added to the product intentionally to impart properties such as waterproofing, for example,” she told Euronews Health.
In contrast, lower levels likely point to unintentional contamination during the manufacturing process, she added.

In each category of products, we found items that did not have intentionally added PFAS. This shows that you can still make these products without adding PFAS.

“This tells us they [PFAS] are not a necessary addition to make the products functional,” she continued.

What are the health risks of PFAS on women’s health?

PFAS include more than 10,000 substances; as a result, research has not fully determined the specific health effects of each one.
Despite this gap, there is strong scientific evidence linking PFAS exposure to adverse health outcomes.
In 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified two PFAS as carcinogenic and possibly carcinogenic to humans. These included perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), both banned in the European Union.
In addition to the risk of tumours, PFAS can damage the immune system of newborns due to maternal exposure to these toxic chemicals, which tend to accumulate in bodies over time, Tina Kold Jensen, a physician and environmental epidemiologist at the University of Southern Denmark, told Euronews Health.
“You are exposed to these substances through hygiene products, then it will take at least four years before half of what you’re exposed to is out of the body. And since it’s there, women of reproductive age pass them on to their children through the placenta and breast milk,” she said.

Jensen also noted that PFAS exposure has been associated with other health issues, including high cholesterol, altered liver enzymes, kidney cancer, and reproductive problems. However, she emphasised that not all of these effects are fully confirmed and said that further research is needed.
Another uncertainty concerns whether the direct contact of pads with the skin poses greater, lesser, or equal health risks compared to environmental exposure to ‘forever chemicals’.
“PFAS exposure is mostly through the gastrointestinal channel. (…) Skin is quite a good barrier, but we don’t know much. But here we’re talking not only about the skin but also the vagina, its lips, that’s different,” Kold Jensen said.
Regarding reusable pads, Jensen added that environmental exposure is another concern: “There’s a lot of PFAS in the environment, and they will definitely get into the environment once you wash the pads,” she said.
To sum up, there are still more questions than answers when it comes to the effects of PFAS on women’s health. But do these eco-friendly pads pose other health risks?

What do we know about reusable menstrual products?

Sustainable period products are becoming increasingly common among young people.
According to a 2022 study, in Spain, the use of reusable hygiene products surpassed that of disposable ones among people aged 26 to 35 at the time of the survey.
The Catalan government launched a public health initiative offering a free menstrual cup, one pair of underwear and two packages of cloth pads to reduce both period poverty and the waste generated by disposable products last March.
Reusable products, in fact, have been shown to be more sustainable alternatives to single-use items. Specifically, menstrual cups appear to have the lowest environmental impact, followed by period underwear and reusable pads.
Aside from recent concerns about PFAS, reusable menstrual products have not been shown to pose any other major health threat, according to a global review on reusable menstrual pads. The only relevant concern appears to be skin irritation associated with long-term use of these products or inadequate cleaning or drying of the items.
A similar study conducted on menstrual cups found that these products are generally safe, except for rare cases of vaginal injuries, toxic shock syndrome, or urinary problems.
As for period underwear, major concerns are related to PFAS and other elements. An investigation conducted by the UK-based organisation Which? in 2023 found high silver levels in some popular period pants brands like Intima, M&S and Thinx. This May 2, 2016, photo shows Thinx that are reusable “period-proof” underwear in New York.

Thinx, in particular, has also been at the centre of the PFAS debate, when in 2020 Sierra Magazine published an investigation with the University of Notre Dame, finding PFAS in the period underwear of the brand. This led to one class-action case against the company, which was settled at the end of 2022.

PFAS, however, are not exclusively present in reusable products, but they have also been found in disposable ones. In 2022, lab tests commissioned by the US consumer watchdog Mamavation and Environmental Health News revealed that PFAS were present in 48% of 46 tested sanitary pads, underwear liners, and incontinence pads.
Another common factor for both single-use and reusable menstrual products is the need for further research to assess the types of PFAS present, their levels, and their health effects.

Pronto's 10-minute house-help pitch sparked a 3.6x valuation jump in just 90 days

In 2025, the average urban Indian no longer needs to wait very long for much (except at government offices and in traffic): They simply have to order what they need from an app, and it’ll be delivered within minutes. The explosion of quick-commerce in the country has meant that millions of Indians are getting increasingly used to not having to wait for deliveries, or step out of their homes, as startups vie to make almost everything, from food and groceries to smartphones and gaming consoles, available within minutes.

It seems investors, too, don’t want to wait long: A budding startup out of New Delhi called Pronto, which lets users book and avail cleaning, laundry, and home services within 10 minutes, has tripled its valuation in less than 90 days.

It was only in May when Pronto raised a $2 million seed round at a $12.5 million valuation. The startup has now raised an $11 million Series A round at a post-money valuation of $45 million, co-led by General Catalyst and Glade Brook Capital. Existing investor Bain Capital Ventures also participated in this round.

The new funding comes in the wake of solid traction: Pronto claims its revenue has risen by nearly five times, founder and CEO Anjali Sardana told TechCrunch, since it came out of stealth barely three months ago.

“It largely comes down to two things: one being momentum and the insane speed at which we were scaling, as well as just investors recognizing the quality of the team and how fast we were executing,” Sardana said, explaining what led investors to fund the Series A so soon after its seed round.

For investors, Sardana seems to be the primary reason they bet this early. “We were very impressed by Anjali,” said Rahul Garg, a partner at General Catalyst. “Given how young she is, given that she spent a lot of her time in the U.S. after she’s come to India, what she’s been able to achieve, the feedback from supply partners, the feedback from customers, her thought process, and how she wants to build and scale this business, we found it very inspiring.”

Pronto is not the only startup connecting domestic workers with consumers. Lightspeed Venture Partners recently backed Snabbit, and IPO-bound Urban Company also offers a similar service.

Garg told TechCrunch that India has 180-190 million nuclear families who are potential customers for household services, and a semi-skilled and unskilled workforce of 35 million that could tap a $35 billion cumulative wage pool in this space.

“Whichever way you look at the market, this is large enough for multiple players to build an endurable business,” he said.

Expansion plans

Pronto now has six hubs in Gurugram, a satellite city of New Delhi, up from two in May. Each of these hubs serves customers within 1.5 miles.

The startup initially met 70% to 80% of demand from within 500 meters of households, as its first two hubs were located in densely populated residential areas. Pronto’s primary customers are working professionals, and it is seeing high demand. “Household help is very prevalent in India. And therefore, these are use cases where demand is quite concentrated, even in small catchment areas,” Garg said.

The startup now plans to expand both within Gurugram and into new markets, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other major cities, in the next 12-18 months.

Pronto has a headcount of 33 people and has around 750 workers signed up on its platform.
