    All businesses currently face a challenging economic environment, and growth businesses are no different. Fuelling the UK’s growth economy, these dynamic businesses are perfectly positioned to seize opportunities and manage challenges ahead in a measured way.

    However, ambition alone is not sufficient. Like any company looking to scale, innovative and entrepreneurial companies must be well prepared regardless of their market segment, with robust business models in place and compelling growth prospects. Another key point on multi-site businesses is ensuring you can demonstrate short payback periods and return on capital. When a business is expanding, investors want to see that each new site recoups its set-up costs within two to three years. If it takes longer, an investor will question whether the business model is viable in the long term.

    Outcomes: the telecoms company more than tripled the business within 12 months and the wind energy company achieved its 10 sites within 6 weeks.

    Uber will add Blade's helicopters to its platform as early as 2026

    Uber users living near New York City or Southern Europe may have a new travel option to pick from in 2026: helicopters.

    Electric air taxi startup Joby Aviation announced Wednesday that Blade Air Mobility helicopters will be on the Uber app starting “as soon as next year.” While Joby is not saying specifically where the Blade helicopters will be available to start, the company told TechCrunch they will likely pop up on the “most popular routes” like to and from airports.

    The news comes just one month after Joby acquired Blade’s passenger business for as much as $125 million. (Blade’s medical division, which helps move live organs, remained a separate company.)

    Uber and Joby are billing this as a step toward eventually launching Joby’s air taxis on the ride-hail network. But that’s still a ways away. Joby plans to launch its first commercial service in 2026 in Dubai, with other markets — including in the U.S. — set to follow after.

    All three companies involved in the announcement have existing relationships.

    Blade was acquired by Joby last month, and its helicopters have actually been on Uber’s platform before, although only in limited promotional offerings.

    Joby, meanwhile, acquired Uber’s “Elevate” air taxi division in 2020, which gave the startup a boost in its plans to build electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles. That helped Joby push to the lead of what was a large pack of eVTOL startups. The startup went public by merging with a special purpose acquisition company in 2021 and has raised hundreds of millions of dollars since, with backing from big companies like Toyota. Uber currently owns around 2.5% of Joby.

    Mastering the Art of Conducting a Disciplinary Investigation

    Then I get the ‘how do I do that?’ and I reach for my management guide and email it through. It’s calls like this which promoted me to share with you how to undertake a disciplinary hearing, how to conduct a disciplinary hearing and how to do an appeal.

    The golden rule when thinking of doing an investigation is that a fair procedure should always be followed. The ACAS Code of Practice on Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures sets out what a fair disciplinary procedure should include and what warnings system should be followed.     A failure to follow the procedure outlined in the Code can make an otherwise fair dismissal unfair. And let’s also not forget that, in addition, if either party has unreasonably failed to comply with any of the provisions of the Code, any Employment Tribunal hearing the aftermath has the discretion to adjust any award by up to 25 per cent (depending on which party was at fault). However, thankfully the tribunal will only make an increase or a reduction to any award if it considers it is ‘just and equitable in all the circumstances to do so’.

    So how do you ensure any allegations are thoroughly and properly investigated?

    Here’s my step by step guide:

    1.      Incident in breach of the Disciplinary Policy is reported/observed and raised.  An investigating officer is appointed – where possible by someone other than the disciplining officer and someone not involved in the alleged incident.

    2.      The investigating officer takes a witness statement from the person who raised the issue. This should include date of the incident, time of the incident, location of the incident, exact nature/details of the incident as they recall, names of any other people who may have witnessed the incident. This should be without unreasonable delay, before recollections fade. The statements should be typed up and witnesses asked to check, sign and date them; giving them opportunity to make any necessary amendments to ensure accuracy.

    3.      It may be appropriate to meet with the employee themselves – please note there is no statutory right to be accompanied at an investigation meeting, nor a requirement to give notice of the meeting to the employee. At this meeting, explain the meeting is only an investigatory one and not part of the formal disciplinary process. Then they should be asked if they are aware of the company rules regarding the alleged breach, to explain what happened, provide any witness details and make any comments. Again these should be noted in writing and a copy sent to the employee after the meeting for verification/amendment.

    Note – If the employee refers to other employee breaches in behaviour as is often the way (‘So and So did it so I didn’t think there was a problem’ etc, etc) thank them for the information, make a note of it and continue with the current investigation.

    4.    The investigating officer then must decide if there is a disciplinary case to answer and if the allegation is potentially gross misconduct. If it is a gross misconduct matter (i.e. something so great as to potentially terminate the contract summarily) this could mean that suspension is required to facilitate the remainder of the investigation.  This period of suspension should be on full pay, it should be for as brief a period as possible and should be kept under review and it should be made clear that suspension is not considered as disciplinary action.

    5.      If there is a case to answer: your employee should be told that you are forwarding the case to a disciplinary hearing, that they will receive written notice and copies of all the investigation notes, and if the allegation is potentially gross misconduct, the employee may be suspended at this point. The investigating officer should prepare a pack of all documentation and a summary of the investigation with their recommendations for the manager conducting the disciplinary hearing. Remember the manager conducting the disciplinary should not have had any involvement whatsoever in the investigation to ensure objectivity.

    6.      If there is not a case to answer: you should tell your employee that you are satisfied with their explanation of events and that you have decided not to proceed with formal disciplinary proceedings.

    The dos and don’ts of selling to an Employee Ownership Trust

    When considering possible exit routes for your business, selling to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) can have several benefits, but a word of caution, this is not an exit route that can just be unilaterally imposed on your management team.

    I recently met with a business owner who had decided that sale to an EOT was the best way to exit his business and apparently for the twin temptations of paying zero capital gains tax and inflating the sale price. He came up with a generous valuation, drafted transfer documents to suit his own terms and presented all of this to his team to sign without any prior discussion. This didn’t go down well and naturally the team weren’t prepared to sign anything. Thankfully this doesn’t happen often, but there are several mistakes which business owners can make if they don’t take advice on how to approach selling to an EOT.
    Not all employees want to become the ‘owner’ of the business they work for. For some it will seem like too much risk or responsibility so you can’t just impose the decision upon them.
    The first step needs to be an open discussion around the possibility of sale to an EOT to set out the pros and cons for the business and to give the remaining senior-employee team time to discuss the options available. The time frame for this might be weeks, months or even a couple of years before it takes place to allow everyone time to adjust and plan.
    Employees need to have the support of independent legal and financial experts to help them to make informed decisions, which should be paid for by the business.
    The next step is looking at what the business is worth so that there is a starting point for negotiations on price. Typically, more than one external valuation should be obtained to facilitate reaching a sensible price somewhere in the middle.
    Whilst usually a significant initial payment will be made to the sellers, equally there may be significant deferred payments to be made from future profits of the business for many years after completion. The purchase price and repayment terms must be sustainable to ensure the business can continue to invest and grow.
    Those employees that are interested in stepping up and taking on more responsibility need to understand what their new role will be, any legal responsibilities that go with it and how they will be rewarded with an enhanced salary and/or bonus arrangements.
    In a well-run process, sellers will take real care to ensure that the senior management team will be stable and well-motivated to make a success of the business following sale, so that the agreed price can be paid in full by the business over the agreed period.  There is often provision made for deferred payments to be accelerated or further deferred depending on how the business is preforming after completion.
    In some businesses the culture of employees sharing in the success of the business through share ownership is embedded well before the ultimate sale to the EOT in the form of employee share option arrangements.  For some owners, sale to an EOT is a continuation of this culture and allows employees to feel more empowered and more invested in the future success of the business. There are studies which suggest that in businesses where there is employee share ownership productivity tends to be higher and long-term sickness and issues around poor performance tend to reduce.
    When done well a sale to an EOT can be less stressful than a traditional 3rd party sale for all parties involved as there is usually the continuity of the management team and people stay in key roles. There is continuity for customers, suppliers and other key stakeholders and there is time to adjust to the new arrangements.
