BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Space Coast Daily’s Terry Spain and Zane Garcia will be on the call as Vero Beach will host the Eau Gallie Commodores in week one of the prep football season.
Tale of the Tape
A year ago, it was the Commodores who hosted the Indians in week one of the prep football season, with Eau Gallie winning a thrilling 29-27 game. The victory served as a huge momentum builder for Eau Gallie, as a season ago, they would go on to win 12 games, the most in program history.
On the Vero Beach side of things, the week one loss sprung the start of a three-game losing streak to start the season, but that did not last long as they would rattle off eight straight, finishing 8-4 and losing in their Regional final as the Commodores did as well.
Eau Gallie started their kickoff classic with Plantation High School, which turned out to be an excellent test for the Commodores early in the season. They would go on to win the contest 38-24, as the offense shone in the victory.
Vero Beach would host Norland (Miami), and while they jumped out early to a 20-0 lead, Norland would storm right back, and that game would finish with a 30-30 tie. No overtime is played in the kickoff classics, while many would have loved to see an ending going one way or the other.
Recap of last year’s Matchup
A season ago, these two faced off in opening week, and Eau Gallie would win an absolute dandy 29-27.
Commodores quarterback Jospeh Allen threw for 288 and two scores, running back Tay Welch added a rushing touchdown, and Athlete Xavier Lherisse would score on a kickoff return.
Vero Beach’s freshman sensation at quarterback, Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV, threw for two touchdowns, Affeon Rivers ran one in, and Senior defensive leader Tarvos Alford took a fumble 70 yards for a score.

Eau Gallie

■ Contain the QB
These are all easier said than done, especially on the road against a very talented Vero Beach team. However, if Eau Gallie can put together scoring drives in the first quarter, they will have a great chance at staying on pace in this matchup.
Protecting the ball is a top priority for every team, and in this case, it might be even more crucial. A season ago, the Commodores had two turnovers, but it worked out regardless; that is not a road you want to trek down if you are Eau Gallie.
Stopping the No. 1-ranked quarterback in the class of 2028 is about as close to impossible, but if you contain Monds from making all the big plays, the Commodores give themselves a significant advantage in this one.

The home field advantage will be significant in this one. With a week one home opener, it is expected that the Indian faithful will be in full effect. Whether it is creating a lot of noise for the Commodores’ offense or getting the crowd amped up off big plays, the comfort of playing at home will be huge for Vero Beach.
The Eau Gallie offense is full of play makers and has the potential to make plays in a hurry, if the Indians can create turnovers and seize momentum that will go a long way in leading them to a big win.
Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV is the focal point of a high-powered offense, but they will need to share the load and balance the attack. The Indians have playmakers as well across the board, and taking the attention away from one singular player will be massive in gaining steam throughout this matchup.

As we move to summer training camps, we take a look ahead to the fall prep football season around the county. Recapping each school’s 2024 season and highlighting what every team has to look forward to in the 2025 season.
The Cocoa Tigers went 11-3, playing some of the best teams nationally. They ended the season defeating Gadsden County 38-27 to win their third straight state championship.
