  • Tavily raises $25M to connect AI agents to the web

Companies across many industries are implementing AI agents for internal use, automating a wide range of tasks.

In the financial sector, AI agents are critical for fraud detection. They can analyze vast amounts of transaction data in real time. Meanwhile, sales organizations are using AI agents to gather data on potential customers. These AI sales agents can scour the web and social media for information.

To be effective, these agents need to access the internet and find information from relevant sources, all while following company policies and mirroring how a human researcher would work.

Connecting an agent directly to a large language model like ChatGPT without company-specific safeguards can lead to highly inappropriate results.

“Governance, risk, and compliance at the enterprise is so important now, and if you just let that happen, it’s just going to be the wild, wild west,” George Mathew, managing director at Insight Partners, told TechCrunch.

That’s why Insight Partners led a $20 million Series A in Tavily, a startup that connects AI agents to the web in a way that’s compliant with company-specific policies. The investment brings the 1-year-old Tavily’s total funding to $25 million.

Founded last year by data scientist Rotem Weiss, Tavily began as an open source project he created in 2023 called GPT Researcher. The consumer-focused project fetched real-time web data before ChatGPT was hooked up to the internet, Weiss told TechCrunch. “It went extremely viral, so pretty fast we gained almost 20,000 GitHub stars.”

Weiss launched Tavily after ChatGPT and other LLMs introduced web search. Unlike GPT Researcher, Tavily focuses on enterprise clients. It provides a suite of tools to companies like Groq, Cohere, MongoDB, and Writer, allowing their agents to search, crawl, and extract structured insights from both public and private sources.

While most AI agents aren’t yet connected to the internet, Weiss says Tavily’s goal is to onboard the next billion agents to the web.

Tavily is not the only startup providing search tools for AI agents. It competes with Exa, which raised a $17 million Series A from Lightspeed, Nvidia, and Y Combinator last year. Another smaller startup that offers a web search connectivity layer is Firecrawl. OpenAI and Perplexity are also offering search solutions that are geared toward independent developers.

  • EU Hits Back as Trump Tariffs Land—UK Shuns Retaliation

EU Hits Back as Trump Tariffs Land—UK Shuns Retaliation

EU Fires Back at Trump’s Steel and Aluminum Tariffs – Trade War Goes Full Frenzy

Yesterday’s night‑time showdown saw the EU unleash a refocusing plan that puts up to €26 billion of U.S. goods on the chopping block. It mirrors the American heaviness on European imports but kicks in a month later, giving Washington a little breathing room.

Ursula von der Leyen’s Take‑Hit Commentary

“Tariffs are bad for business and even worse for consumers. They’re smacking supply chains, stoking uncertainty, jeopardizing jobs, and inflating prices,” declared the EU’s chief. She warned that Europe’s economy could slide into stag‑flation – a “looming doom” for anyone watching the markets.

    EU Counter‑Measures in Action

    • April 1: €4.5 billion of U.S. goods – think bourbon, jeans, Harley‑Dads – hit the 50% ceiling.
    • April 13: an additional €18 billion of American goods (cosmetics, clothes, soybeans, chickens, beef) joins the levy list. There’s also a potential €3.5 billion of extra items, pending member‑state approval.
    • South‑American soybeans are on the menu because they’re grown in the home state of U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a quirky footnote at the trade table.

Some U.S. officials are fishing for a “dip” in the tariffs, hoping to reel in a quick bargain – “We want to ensure there’s pressure within the American system to lift their tariffs,” one said.

    UK’s One‑Side Stance

Despite being Europe’s gravity, the UK decided to stay calm and not retaliate immediately. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his government keeps “all options” open, but Treasury minister James Murray made it clear that ramen‑thin British steel exports will survive the heat for now. Even though the U.S. is a top market for British steel, London opts for diplomacy, hoping a new economic pact will rescue the domestic sector.

What’s the Bottom Line for Global Trade?

Trump’s move in July – adding tariffs to everything from tennis rackets to rugby gear – broke agreements that let some steel and aluminium trade slip in duty‑free. He claimed cheating villains were driving up metal imports. In reality, it’s spinning a restrictive web that may send prices soaring and business pipelines snarl.

In the big picture, the beefy goodies – $151 billion worth of steel and aluminium goods – have now got a fresh squeeze.

One Out, Two In? The “Brexit‑2” Hypothesis

The UK’s independence gave it the upper hand, but London’s lack of a clear veto underlines the complications of Windfall deals with EU friends and the U.S. Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal team is chasing a ‘win‑win’ on its trade frontiers.

Bottom line: this titular tug‑of‑war will keep both parties sweating for the next year, while the rest of the world watches to see who survives the inevitable boom‑or‑bust.

  • How disinformation fuelled Spain’s anti-migrant riots after attack on pensioner

The town of Torre Pacheco has been shaken by an attack on a local pensioner and ensuing violent anti-migrant unrest – and disinformation has inflamed the tensions.

Torre Pacheco, a town in Spain’s south-eastern region of Murcia, has made headlines this week after a pensioner was beaten up by three young men, sparking protests which spiralled into violent unrest.
The 68-year-old victim of the attack, Domingo, has said he was taking his routine morning walk when three men appeared, one of whom lunged at him before beating him in the head, face and body.

Police have discarded robbery as the motive and say the attack was likely filmed as part of a social media ‘challenge’ targeting the elderly and vulnerable.
Three people of North African origin have been arrested. One of them, a 19-year-old man believed to be the attacker, was detained in the Basque province of Gipuzkoa while attempting to flee to France.
The incident sparked two nights of protests, which rapidly turned into violent disorder, with reports of groups roaming the streets looking for people of foreign origin. Several people were injured, despite a heavy police presence.
Far-right, anti-migrant groups such as ‘Deport Them Now’ have called for attacks on people of North African origin. A Spanish leader of the group, known only by the initials C.L.F., was detained on suspicion of inciting violence in the province of Barcelona.
His arrest is one of at at least 14 which have been made concerning the ensuing riots, with reports of businesses belonging to residents with foreign origins, including a kebab shop, being vandalised.

Torre Pacheco is home to 40,000 inhabitants, of whom 6,829 are of African origin, according to the statistical office of the Murcia regional government.

Images of pensioner’s injuries are real, but no footage has yet emerged

Images of the bruised and blood-stained face of Domingo, the 68-year-old victim of the attack, have gone viral.
These images are real and show the extent and gravity of his injuries.
But a video circulating widely online claiming to show the attack – amplified by prominent political figures, including the leader of the anti-establishment SALF party – is in fact unrelated. An unrelated video claiming to show the Torre Pacheco attack is criculating onlineAn unrelated video claiming to show the Torre Pacheco attack is criculating online
    Euronews 2025

Both the victim, Domingo, and the local authorities have confirmed that while it seems the perpetrators filmed the attack, this is not the corresponding video.
It has since emerged that this video in fact shows a separate attack on another man from Almería, a town some 200km from Torre Pacheco in the region of Andalucia.
In a video statement published on Instagram by the account @josemoya6422, the man confirms that the video shows him and holds up the items of clothing he wore during the attack as evidence.
“I am from Almería (…), these are two different attacks”, the man explains. In another post, he explains that two youngsters are already in a provisional prison for the attack on him.
He also shares a link to an article by La Voz de Almería dated 31 May 2025, which corresponds to his account of events.
No verified footage of the attack on Domingo has yet emerged, but the photographs showing the injuries he suffered are real.

Unrelated videos claim to show ensuing unrest

Euroverify and Spanish fact-checkers have also identified a series of unrelated videos associated with the anti-migrant unrest that has emerged in the town of Torre Pacheco since the attack.
One widely-circulating video claims to show a group of young people, described by social media users as ‘migrants’, attacking another elderly man in the street in the town.
But a reverse-image search shows that it was filmed in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2021, and has often re-emerged as disinformation related to young migrants.
Another video shows people throwing objects at Spanish police officers as men are arrested on the street, with users claiming it shows Torre Pacheco.
But the scene occurred in the town of Torrevieja, in a separate Spanish province, earlier this month.

Local authority didn’t associate criminality with migration

A fake communication from the town hall of Torre Pacheco is also circulating widely online, in which a protest is purportedly convened against the situation of “insecurity” in the municipality due to incidents in which “immigration” is a “common denominator”.A fake poster purporting to have been published by the Torre Pacheco town hall circulates onlineA fake poster purporting to have been published by the Torre Pacheco town hall circulates online
    Euronews 2025

But the document is fake, and the town hall of Torre Pacheco has denied it ever existed.
Yet, it circulated rapidly on Telegram and was also amplified by Russian state-sponsored media Pravda.
Despite this, a congregation was organised by the local town hall in the aftermath of Domingo’s attack, as advertised on its official website. The local authorities did convene a protest against 'recent criminal incidents' in the aftermath of the attackThe local authorities did convene a protest against ‘recent criminal incidents’ in the aftermath of the attack
    Ayuntamiento de Torre Pacheco

The poster reads that the congregation was “against recent criminal acts in the municipality” but makes no reference to migration as a common denominator, as claimed in the disinformation.

    Authorities clamp down on disinformation

Incitement to hatred on social platforms also played a role in inflaming tensions in Torre Pacheco, Spanish officials have said.
Euroverify has seen several messages calling for immigrants in the town to “be hunted down” in two Telegram groups associated with the far-right extremist group ‘Deport Them Now’, which were suspended by the authorities during the unrest.
Police sources have also told Spanish media El Mundo that “hundreds” of radical extremists travelled to Torre Pacheco to take part in the riots after they were mobilised online.

  • Karen Hao on the Empire of AI, AGI evangelists, and the cost of belief

Karen Hao on the Empire of AI, AGI evangelists, and the cost of belief

At the center of every empire is an ideology, a belief system that propels the system forward and justifies expansion – even if the cost of that expansion directly defies the ideology’s stated mission.

For European colonial powers, it was Christianity and the promise of saving souls while extracting resources. For today’s AI empire, it’s artificial general intelligence to “benefit all humanity.” And OpenAI is its chief evangelist, spreading zeal across the industry in a way that has reframed how AI is built.

“I was interviewing people whose voices were shaking from the fervor of their beliefs in AGI,” Karen Hao, journalist and bestselling author of “Empire of AI,” told TechCrunch on a recent episode of Equity.

In her book, Hao likens the AI industry in general, and OpenAI in particular, to an empire.

“The only way to really understand the scope and scale of OpenAI’s behavior…is actually to recognize that they’ve already grown more powerful than pretty much any nation state in the world, and they’ve consolidated an extraordinary amount of not just economic power, but also political power,” Hao said. “They’re terraforming the Earth. They’re rewiring our geopolitics, all of our lives. And so you can only describe it as an empire.”

OpenAI has described AGI as “a highly autonomous system that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work,” one that will somehow “elevate humanity by increasing abundance, turbocharging the economy, and aiding in the discovery of new scientific knowledge that changes the limits of possibility.”

These nebulous promises have fueled the industry’s exponential growth — its massive resource demands, oceans of scraped data, strained energy grids, and willingness to release untested systems into the world. All in service of a future that many experts say may never arrive.

Hao says this path wasn’t inevitable, and that scaling isn’t the only way to get more advances in AI.

“You can also develop new techniques in algorithms,” she said. “You can improve the existing algorithms to reduce the amount of data and compute that they need to use.”

But that tactic would have meant sacrificing speed.

“When you define the quest to build beneficial AGI as one where the victor takes all — which is what OpenAI did — then the most important thing is speed over anything else,” Hao said. “Speed over efficiency, speed over safety, speed over exploratory research.”Open AI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman speaks during the Kakao media day in Seoul.Image Credits:Kim Jae-Hwan/SOPA Images/LightRocket / Getty Images

For OpenAI, she said, the best way to guarantee speed was to take existing techniques and “just do the intellectually cheap thing, which is to pump more data, more supercomputers, into those existing techniques.”

OpenAI set the stage, and rather than fall behind, other tech companies decided to fall in line.

“And because the AI industry has successfully captured most of the top AI researchers in the world, and those researchers no longer exist in academia, then you have an entire discipline now being shaped by the agenda of these companies, rather than by real scientific exploration,” Hao said.

The spend has been, and will be, astronomical. Last week, OpenAI said it expects to burn through $115 billion in cash by 2029. Meta said in July that it would spend up to $72 billion on building AI infrastructure this year. Google expects to hit up to $85 billion in capital expenditures for 2025, most of which will be spent on expanding AI and cloud infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the goal posts keep moving, and the loftiest “benefits to humanity” haven’t yet materialized, even as the harms mount. Harms like job loss, concentration of wealth, and AI chatbots that fuel delusions and psychosis. In her book, Hao also documents workers in developing countries like Kenya and Venezuela who were exposed to disturbing content, including child sexual abuse material, and were paid very low wages — around $1 to $2 an hour — in roles like content moderation and data labeling.

Hao said it’s a false tradeoff to pit AI progress against present harms, especially when other forms of AI offer real benefits.

She pointed to Google DeepMind’s Nobel Prize-winning AlphaFold, which is trained on amino acid sequence data and complex protein folding structures, and can now accurately predict the 3D structure of proteins from their amino acids — profoundly useful for drug discovery and understanding disease.

“Those are the types of AI systems that we need,” Hao said. “AlphaFold does not create mental health crises in people. AlphaFold does not lead to colossal environmental harms … because it’s trained on substantially less infrastructure. It does not create content moderation harms because [the datasets don’t have] all of the toxic crap that you hoovered up when you were scraping the internet.”

Alongside the quasi-religious commitment to AGI has been a narrative about the importance of racing to beat China in the AI race, so that Silicon Valley can have a liberalizing effect on the world.

“Literally, the opposite has happened,” Hao said. “The gap has continued to close between the U.S. and China, and Silicon Valley has had an illiberalizing effect on the world … and the only actor that has come out of it unscathed, you could argue, is Silicon Valley itself.”

Of course, many will argue that OpenAI and other AI companies have benefitted humanity by releasing ChatGPT and other large language models, which promise huge gains in productivity by automating tasks like coding, writing, research, customer support, and other knowledge-work tasks.

But the way OpenAI is structured — part non-profit, part for-profit — complicates how it defines and measures its impact on humanity. And that’s further complicated by the news this week that OpenAI reached an agreement with Microsoft that brings it closer to eventually going public.

Two former OpenAI safety researchers told TechCrunch that they fear the AI lab has begun to confuse its for-profit and non-profit missions — that because people enjoy using ChatGPT and other products built on LLMs, this ticks the box of benefiting humanity.

Hao echoed these concerns, describing the dangers of being so consumed by the mission that reality is ignored.

“Even as the evidence accumulates that what they’re building is actually harming significant amounts of people, the mission continues to paper all of that over,” Hao said. “There’s something really dangerous and dark about that, of [being] so wrapped up in a belief system you constructed that you lose touch with reality.”

A new night bus network is launching in Europe this autumn, with routes connecting some of the continent’s key tourist destinations.
Run by Swiss transportation company Twiliner, the service aims to close “the comfort gap in long-distance travel”.

The sleeper bus will begin operations in November 2025, with stops planned across Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain.
It will give eco-conscious travellers another long-distance transport alternative to short-haul flights.
Twiliner claims journeys on their coaches are as sustainable as going by train and save 85 per cent of CO2e emissions compared to flying.
It adds that vehicles will run on HVO diesel, a renewable fuel derived from waste fats and vegetable oils.

A night bus with seating like an aeroplane business class

Twiliner has also made comfort a top priority for its coaches, with facilities similar to those found on sleeper trains.

The seats will be the first on a bus in Europe to completely transform into beds at the push of a button, allowing travellers to get some shut-eye when they choose during the journey.
The 21 seats (18 located on the upper deck and 3 on the lower) have been modelled on those found in business class on planes, with pillows and blankets provided. The seats will be the first on a bus in Europe to completely transform into beds at the push of a buttonThe seats will be the first on a bus in Europe to completely transform into beds at the push of a button

Each seating area also has electrical outlets, a table, and individual reading lights, along with complimentary internet access. There is a small storage compartment to keep personal items within easy reach.

On the lower deck, passengers can get ready for bed in the spacious bathroom and changing room facilities (though showers aren’t available).
Also on this level is a snack bar, where travellers can find light refreshments. On the lower deck, passengers can get ready for bed in the spacious bathroom and changing room facilities. On the lower deck, passengers can get ready for bed in the spacious bathroom and changing room facilities.

In terms of luggage, passengers are permitted to bring one large suitcase that adheres to Twiliner’s specifications (maximum 23kg; 80 x 50 x 35cm) plus one carry-on item (maximum 5kg; 50 x 30 x 20cm).
Additional items like bicycles, skiing equipment, and surfboards can be brought on board as long as they have been booked in advance.

Night bus network aims to connect 25 European cities by 2028

When it launches in November, the company will start with two routes: Zurich to Amsterdam, stopping in Basel, Luxembourg, Brussels and Rotterdam; and Zurich to Barcelona with a stop in Girona.
Buses run several times a week – likely increasingly to daily next year – and prices begin at around €180 one way.
There are no other scheduled rest stops during journeys, except for obligatory driver changes.

Twiliner notes that their service isn’t appropriate for families with small children, as passengers under five years old are not permitted to travel.
Older children are welcomed on board, “as long as they are familiar with long-distance travelling and can take the quiet, sleep-friendly environment into consideration.”
Ultimately, the company aims to have a continent-wide network of overnight bus services that complements current night train operations, with a view to connecting Europe’s 25 most visited cities within three years.

  • Eurostar Cuts Boarding Time by 30 Minutes at St Pancras to Relieve Crowds

Boosting Train Capacity: The Triple‑Plus Expansion Plan

Train lovers, get ready to hop on a bigger platform of excitement! A bold new strategy is underway to crank up the station’s capacity, paving the way for what experts predict will be a three‑fold rise in demand for international rail travel. It’s not just a tweak—think of it as turning the station from a cozy café into a bustling subway hub.

    Why the Upgrade Makes Sense

    • More seats, more tracks – Adding extra platforms means more trains can line up without pulling a crowd from the next station.
    • Speedy connections – Shorter queuing times translate to a smoother passenger experience.
    • Future‑proofing – The expansion supports the expected surge in international ticket sales, so no one has to worry about missing that London‑to‑Paris ride.

    What the Expansion Looks Like

Picture this: a brand‑new stretch of high‑speed rails, new digital signage guiding travelers from ticket to departure, and a revamped waiting area that feels less like a commute and more like a mini‑holiday escape.

    Community Buzz

Locals are buzzing—some are nervous about construction noise, but most are thrilled. The plan’s breather says, “We’ll keep the train’s rhythm smooth, and your coffee station shall remain proudly unshaken.”

What to Expect While It’s in the Works

    During the upgrade:

    • Expect a slight detour for the most adventurous commuters.
    • Enjoy dedicated temporary stations with free Wi‑Fi (so you can catch up on those long‑haul streaming binges).
    • Take advantage of loyalty perks offered by rail partners while you patiently wait—more say good things for the inconvenience.

All in all, the station upgrade is a strategically sharpened move to keep our railways humming, making sure every traveler can move from point A to point B—without a hitch and with a grin. Stay on track; the next chapter of the station’s story is just around the corner!

    Eurostar’s Early‑Boarding Glitch

Calling all train‑hoppers! Eurostar is ditching the frantic last‑minute rush at London’s St Pancras by letting passengers hop aboard 30 minutes before the train leaves. No more circling the departure lounge, no more figuring out which seat door is closest—just hop in and enjoy the ride.

    Why the Change?

    • Beat the crowd: The station’s new strategy will give people a head start on the over‑packed exit gates.
    • Triple the demand: Travel forecasts predict the next wave of international journeys will triple, so more train slots are a must.
    • EES prep: With the EU’s Entry/Exit System launching in October, early boarding smooths the security flow for everyone.

    What to Expect

Think of it as moving from the “last‑minute check‑in” club to the “early‑bird RSVP” tier. Just arrive a half‑hour early, claim your seat, and get a smoother start. All you’ll need to bring is your boarding pass and a sense of humor about the old rush.

    Rising Expectations Ahead

With traffic projected to almost triple, this seemingly small tweak could make the difference between a comfy commute and a frantic scramble. Stay relaxed, folks—Eurostar’s got you covered.

Eurostar services are more popular than ever

St Pancras: Where Train Fans Turn Into a London Pop‑Up

    Eurostar’s Record‑Breaking Boot‑Count

Eurostar has been on a tear this year, smashing its own records twice already. A full 136,000 passengers rushed through St Pancras in just a few weeks.

That spike isn’t a fluke – overall numbers are up 4.23% year‑on‑year, adding about 101,000 travellers between January and June. Basically, every winter break is turning into a nonstop cruise.

    Space‑Squeeze in the Iconic Building

St Pancras might be historic, but it was never built for crowds of this size. Check‑in lines, security snags, and border checks are playing a game of “Who gets in first?” and the result? Long queues that could outlast a football match.

    • Check‑in lanes stretch to supermarket chic length.
    • Security is waiting for you like it’s a VIP line.
    • Border control makes you feel like you’re at a passport office, not a train station.
    • Departure lounge? Think of it as a marathon of standing.

Bringing the Crowd Back to the Trains

To keep the train crowd in the carriages and off the concourse, Eurostar and St Pancras are pushing an “earlier boarding” move. It’s a simple tweak that could shrink those queues, turning the station back into the fast‑track we all love.

    What It Means for You

If you’re planning a trip: less time standing in line and more time enjoying the ”London vibe”—without juggling a suitcase in a sea of strangers.

International rail travel from St Pancras projected to triple

St Pancras Gears Up for a Passenger Boom!

St Pancras is stepping into the fast lane, and it’s not just about speed—it’s about crowding. The plan? Double the passenger load and give the train‑roaming crowd a ride that rivals the high‑flying standards of Heathrow’s Terminal 5. Think of it as turning the train into a premium, city‑center‑to‑city‑center express.

Core Numbers – More Than Just a Train Stop

    • Last year 1,800 people per hour swaggered through St Pancras.
    • Goal: reach a staggering 5,000 per hour in the next few years.
    • By 2040, international rail traffic is expected to triple from 11 million to 35 million passengers per year.

Why Speed Isn’t the Whole Story

Eurostar and the St Pancras crew are on a mission to make the station a community hub that feels less like a transit stop and more like a convenient, well‑packed café. The focus isn’t just on the journey’s length, but on the whole experience from the moment you step off the platform to the second you sip your coffee in the next city.

    Leaders Speak Out

Richard Thorp, Chief Operating Officer of London St Pancras High Speed told the UK newspaper The Standard:

“St Pancras and Eurostar are absolutely committed to creating an amazing space for the traveling public.”

“We know what the competition is doing. We’ve got to outshine them and promote what makes city‑center to city‑center travel great—like the café‑to‑café journey experience.”

Putting the ‘Café’ in City Transport

Picture this: you hop on a train, dash into “café A” in London, arrive at your destination and step straight into “café B,” all while traveling at a comfort level that could put a luxury hotel to shame. That’s the kind of vibe St Pancras is aiming for—fast, friendly, and, frankly, a lot of fun.

Eurostar prepares for the EU’s EES

St Pancras Gets Ready for the Digital Passport Surge

Brexit’s border checks are already causing a bit of a bottleneck, and the EU’s new EES (Electronic Entry System) might just make it worse. Think of it as swapping the old paper‑stamp for a high‑tech scanner – neat, but it needs a whole new hardware party at every Schengen border.

What St Pancras Gears Up For

    • Staff double‑up: Eurostar is hiring twice the amount of border personnel. More eyes on the gates mean fewer “where’s the queue?” moments.
    • Manual booths go in double: They’re expanding the traditional hassle‑free area so travelers don’t have to hop into the corner for fingerprints.
    • No space for kiosks: The station’s got only 24 spots for the EES, but Europe needs up to 49. The solution? Swaddle the kiosks into places already buzzing with other trains and “HS1” traffic.
    • Training‑insured workforce: Eurostar promises “specially‑trained staff at all times” – because nobody wants a tech glitch in the middle of a ticket‑free sprint.

Looking Ahead: ETIAS and the €7 Ticket

When the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) rolls in by the end of 2026, British and other non‑EU passengers will need to pre‑register online, provide details, and pop a small €7 fee into their pocket before stepping onto the Channel Tunnel or any Eurostar journey.

In short, the UK‑EU border is getting a digital makeover, and St Pancras is playing the role of the over‑prepared friend who keeps all your train tickets in order, even when the world’s moving into a high‑tech passport stamp era.

  • OpenAI rolls out two open AI reasoning models

OpenAI Announces New Open‑Weight AI Models

OpenAI dropped a bombshell on Tuesday, unveiling two brand‑new open‑weight AI models that match the prowess of its so‑called O‑series. The company says the models are “state of the art” when measured against the usual benchmarking tests for open models.

    Meet the Two Sizes

    • gpt‑oss‑120b – A power‑house that runs comfortably on a single Nvidia GPU.
    • gpt‑oss‑20b – A lightweight champ that can be deployed on a standard laptop with 16 GB of RAM.

Both are free to download straight from Hugging Face’s developer hub, and they’re ready to jump into your projects.

It’s Been a Long Time Coming

This marks OpenAI’s first “open” language model since the wild‑cards of GPT‑2 came out over five years ago. The company’s early days were all about openness, but lately it’s leaned heavily on a proprietary model that fuels its profitable API business.

    Open Models, Sharpbacks

But there’s an interesting twist: if your open model can’t handle a fancy task—say, crunching an image—developers can hook it up to one of OpenAI’s higher‑tuned closed models hosted in the cloud. It’s like having a versatile Swiss‑army knife that can enlist a bigger gadget when needed.

    Why the Shift?

CEO Sam Altman has been open about feeling the company has been “on the wrong side of history” with its closed‑source strategy. The latest move comes amid mounting pressure from rival Chinese labs such as DeepSeek, Alibaba’s Qwen, and Moonshot AI, which have been rolling out top‑synergy open models. META’s Llama line, once a darling, has struggled in recent years.

    Political Play‑book

In July, the Trump administration urged U.S. AI developers to democratize more technology to spread AI that aligns with American values. So, while the industry’s in a tug‑of‑war between commercial interests and open innovation, OpenAI is now nudging a new wave of openness.

OpenAI Drops GPT‑OSS – A New Tune for Developers & Politicians

    Location: San Francisco
    Date: October 27‑29, 2025

Ready to hop on the bandwagon? Register now and snag your spot at the event that’s got everyone talking.

    Why GPT‑OSS Matters

    • Built from the heart of the U.S., the new open‑source stack carries a strong democratic backbone.
    • It gives developers a free, ready‑to‑use playground that can level the playing field with any emerging tech.
    • It’s a subtle nod to the folks who keep an eye on China’s AI surge—an invitation to collaborate, not compete.

    Altman’s Take

When OpenAI co‑founder Sahil Altman reflected on the company’s roots in 2015, he highlighted a bigger picture: “We’re all about crafting AGI that works for everyone.” He added, “We’re thrilled to let the world build on an American‑born AI stack, one that’s absolutely free, democratic, and wide‑ranging.”

    What’s Next?

With GPT‑OSS officially live, the horizon looks expansive. Developers will get the tools to innovate, while policymakers might find a new ally in ensuring our future AI is as inclusive as it is powerful.

    How the models performed

    OpenAI’s “Open‑Weight” Supremacy – A Light‑Hearted Recap

Why the Buzz Around Open Models?

OpenAI set out with a bold mission: lean its open‑weight lineup into the crowd king of all open AI models. They’re saying the goal was hit, and the hype is real.

Codeforces Showdown – The Numbers in a Nutshell

    • GPT‑OSS‑120B2622 points
    • GPT‑OSS‑20B2516 points
    • These two powerhouses beat DeepSeek’s R1, but still trail behind o3 and o4‑mini.

    What That Means for Us

Even if they’re not topping every single contender, OpenAI’s models are carving out a respectable lane. If you’re wrestling with code, these numbers reflect that OpenAI is staying competitive, but it’s still a marathon – not a sprint.

    Takeaway

OpenAI’s open‑weight soldiers are getting more up‑to‑speed; they’re taking a sturdy step ahead of some rivals, even if they’re still chasing the leaders of the pack. Keep an eye on how the leaderboard shifts in the next code challenge – and enjoy the thrill of watching a game of AI size that keeps pushing boundaries!

OpenAI’s Open Models Take on Codeforces (and Face the HLE)

When it came time to put OpenAI’s open‑source cousins to the test, the results were a mixed bag of triumphs and turbulence. Picture this: gpt‑oss‑120b and gpt‑oss‑20b stepped up to Humanity’s Last Exam (HLE) – a wild playground of crowdsourced questions that squeeze every tool in the toolbox. Their scores? 19 % for the 120‑b variant and a bit shy at 17.3 % for the 20‑b one.

    How Do They Stack Up?

    • Underperforming o3: The o3 model still pulls ahead – a small but noteworthy gap.
    • Outshining the Competition: Against the likes of DeepSeek and Qwen, OpenAI’s open models are the dark horse champs.

What This Means for the Future

While the scores might not scream “super‑human,” the fact that OpenAI’s open models are beating some of the big names in the field shows promise. It’s a sign that the open‑source community is punching up, and the showdown on Codeforces is just the first round.

    Takeaway

The tech world is all eyes on the next leap. If OpenAI keeps refining its open models, the next HLE could very well see a surge of fresh stories – maybe even a heart‑warming, “look, we’ve got this!” moment for the wider community.

OpenAI’s Open Models Are Short on Facts

When it comes to getting straight answers, the newer OpenAI “reasoning” models outshine the older, fully commercial ones. The big‑shot models like o3 and o4‑mini keep their guesses in check, while the open‑source cousins are a bit more creative with the truth.

    What’s Going Wrong?

OpenAI’s own white paper admits that smaller models simply don’t know everything. With fewer parameters, they don’t see the world as clearly and end up “hallucinating” more.

    Hallucination Numbers That Shock

    • gpt-oss-120b → 49 % of the time it made a wrong claim on PersonQA.
    • gpt-oss-20b → 53 % hallucinations.
    • Compare that to the newer o1 model, which only stuck to the facts 84 % of the time.
    • Even the o4‑mini kept up the accuracy a bit better at 64 % correctness.

    Why the Gap?

Think of the models like students: o1 and o4‑mini are the college graduates with a full thesis, while gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b are still finishing high school. The let‑down in knowledge leads to more made‑up answers.

    Bottom Line

OpenAI’s data suggests the larger, newer reasoning models do a better job at staying grounded in reality. The smaller, open‑source variants might still be useful for some applications, but remember: they’re more likely to spin up a story than a fact.

    Training the new models

OpenAI’s Open Models: A Fresh Take on AI Power

    What’s the Big Deal?

OpenAI has rolled out two open‑source beasts, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, under the super‑permissive Apache 2.0 license. That means companies can monetize these models without buying a license or asking for special permission. Pretty sweet, right?

    Under the Hood

    • Mixture‑of‑Experts (MoE): Instead of shouting out all 117 billion parameters, GPT‑OSS curates only the sweet 5.1 billion that actually matter for each token. Think of it as a smart autopilot that only pulls in the deck you need.
    • High‑Compute Reinforcement Learning: After the initial train, OpenAI gave the models a reality check with simulated environments on massive Nvidia GPU clusters. It’s like having a civil‑engineering lab run your football coach.
    • Chain‑of‑Thought: These models take the extra time to wrangle complex answers, which helps when they need to call tools like web searches or run Python code. They’re the calculators that ask, “Let me think for a minute,” before answering.

What They Can (and Can’t) Do

    • Text‑Only: The open models stay in the word land. No image or audio output—just pure prose. Easier license, but still a powerhouse for chatting and LLM tasks.
    • Agent Capabilities: With RL training and MoE efficiency, GPT‑OSS can become an AI agent that leverages hands‑on tools. Picture a model that can read the internet live or debug code on the fly.

    Why the Delay? Safety First

OpenAI has taken its time, re‑examining the security angle. A white‑paper study looked at whether hackers could tweak GPT‑OSS for cyberattacks or biological weapon design.

    Findings

    • Some slight bump in biological “capabilities” but never crossed the “high‑danger” threshold, even after fine‑tuning.
    • No evidence that downstream users could weaponise the models to a scary degree.

What’s Next in the Open‑AI Ecosystem

While GPT‑OSS already tops the open‑model leaderboard, the grow‑till you’re hungry—

    • DeepSeek R2: The next reasoning model from DeepSeek is generating buzz.
    • Meta’s Superintelligence Lab: A fresh open model from Meta could disrupt the scene.

    Bottom Line

OpenAI’s new open‑source models are the efficient, well‑trained, text‑only silver bullet for developers. They’re free to use, yet not without some caution over potential misuse. Keep an eye on what the community builds around them—they’re set to become the backbone of next‑gen AI tools.

  • Airline Reviews

    Airline Reviews

The travel industry is profoundly shaped by the experiences and perceptions of its customers. The airline sector, in particular, is one where customer feedback plays a pivotal role in shaping the reputation of carriers. As the year 2025 approaches, many travellers are turning to comprehensive best airline reviews to make informed decisions about which airlines to choose for their journeys.

Emerging Trends in Airline Customer Experience

Customer satisfaction is paramount in the increasingly competitive world of commercial aviation. Airlines that consistently excel in customer service, safety, pricing, and comfort gain significant recognition, impacting their overall patronage. In the age of digital transparency, airline reviews become critical indicators of performance and service quality.

What Makes an Airline Stand Out?

To be featured among the best airlines of 2025, carriers must demonstrate excellence across various categories. These include advancements in in-flight entertainment, seat comfort, customer service efficiency, on-time performance, and the integration of technology to simplify travel processes. The environmental footprint of airlines is also under scrutiny, as sustainability becomes a significant concern for travellers.

  • San Francisco’s Dream: Nintendo Flagship Store Sparks Hope for Struggling Businesses

San Francisco’s Dream: Nintendo Flagship Store Sparks Hope for Struggling Businesses

San Francisco’s Retail Rumble: Why Shops Are Turning Into “Gone‑What‑You‑Gave”

The Crunch of the Golden State’s Dollar‑Drop

When the city’s tax logs hit the “progressive” scoreboard, most businesses felt oddly similar to a lunch menu without dessert—sweet at first, but soon, a big dry bite. The math was simple: raise a few taxes, bend a few law‑enforcement rules, and voilà, the profit margin shrank faster than a selfie cropping a crowd.

Ridiculous Robberies and Grandma’s Gut‑Famous Heists

    • 8,100 crimes reported in 2025 (Swiping, Arson, or just “I needed more tea”)
    • 530 robberies—because apparently “endless kitchen counter” was too generic
    • 4,600+ larceny claims, so the break‑in club is very open to new members

When a bill rolled back the penalty for folks who swiped stuff under $950, the whole city’s thieves hit the “under‑headline” button and got half‑the fear‑law enforcement. Businesses had to lock their “just announced sale” displays behind plastic wrap and chains, like a teenager’s ‘secret’ piano practice.

The Big Name Dropouts (and Urbane Heartache)

    1. Denny’s, Walgreens, Michael Kors – all quietly giving up on the Golden Gate.
    2. Union Square’s Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue – all on a “runaway” list.
    3. Uniqlo, Adidas, American Eagle – only if they pick a hypnotic disco.
    4. J Crew, Madewell, Aldo, L’Occitane, Psycho Bunny, Sunglass Hut, Razer – not finding the “savings” you look for.

Side note: the big ‘shop resurrection’ plot is a new Nintendo flagship store, which is practically the Prime Minister of a video‑game staircase. The only thing you’re buying is a console and a sense of “we should probably mention this in a press release”.

Hope for the Pirates and Reporters

There’s a small, hopeful whisper that this retail phoenix might revive foot traffic in the already‑re‑patched Union Square. However, a single hero-store is a bit like a single tourist selfie—nice to view, but not a passport to restoring an entire mall’s credibility.

Fix the Police, or fix the Fraud

What do the city’s rates and the ongoing theft puzzle have in common? Both lead to a pile of broken coffers, exhausted workers, and hanging bubble wrap. While a law may not be the sole culprit, fried dough and jail time are tools that could transform this urban crisis into a small‑town uprising to fight corruption and reinstate profit‑ability.

Why Nintendo Is Eyeing San Francisco – And Why They’re Looking for a Deal

It’s a bit of a head‑scratcher: Nintendo deciding to set up a flagship outlet in the heart of San Francisco. The only logical answer? A lottery of government perks.

The City’s “Sweet Bribe” – The Downtown Revitalization Program

Just recently, the Orange‑County administration rolled out a thing called the “Downtown Revitalization Program”, and no, it’s not a re‑branded public‑works project.

    • Financial incentives: Money in the pockets of the city’s finance department.
    • Grants: Hand‑out cash for the big shoes of business operators.
    • Low‑interest loans: Because high rates make any venture feel like a bag of tomatoes.
    • Beautification rewards: Get points for sprucing up the city, and those points might be the golden ticket for the company.

How Nintendo Can Pay Its First Year

After scrounging up enough taxpayer dollars, it looks like Nintendo might already be covered for a whole year of operations. Think of it as the city saying, “Buy us a coffee and you can stay.”

Bottom Line – No Company will Root in SF Unless the Local Government Pays it

All it takes is a tangible offer from the local government, and the company will set up shop. Without that, the city will keep its floors clean and its streets dry.

  • Trump Administration Announces $15,000 Visa Security Deposit for Certain Visitors

    Trump Administration Tightens Visa Rules

    What’s Changing?

Under the latest push, the U.S. is making it harder for certain foreign citizens to secure a visa. This new measure isn’t a blanket ban—just a stricter set of hurdles that could feel like getting stuck in a maze of paperwork.

    Key Countries Affected

    • China
    • India
    • Pakistan
    • Vietnam
    • South Africa, among others

    Why the Fuss?

Proponents argue it’s about tightening security, but critics say it’s a bureaucratic barb. Either way, the changes mean more forms, more fees, and more appointments before one can even grab the visa stamp.

    What Citizens Should Do

1⃣ Check the official list—it’s updated regularly.
2⃣ Gather all required documents—nothing left out will slow you down.
3⃣ Plan ahead—the new process may take longer than usual.
    4⃣ Stay calm—yes, it’s a hassle, but it’s all mostly paperwork.

Trump’s New Twist on Visas: A $15,000 Deposit Are You Ready?

In a bold slide tick toward tighter borders, the Trump office has rolled out a pilot that asks certain visa seekers to clench a hefty $15,000 ($12,901) bond before they even jump off the plane. This latest schtick, filed in the Federal Register on Tuesday, will kick off on August 20 and live for a full year to see if it really keeps people from overstaying.

    How It Works

    • Applicants face a $15k hold‑up—pretend it’s a “security deposit” for their stay.
    • The clause kicks in for the visa’s legit duration only; you’re looking at the official legal stay limits.
    • Got it? Good; pay it. Wait to get it back until the final step: you leave the U.S. and your visa expires.

    Why the Nugget?

By enlisting a financial cushion, officials aim to make overstayers think twice about cutting their trip short— and if they overstay, that money gets confiscated. Basically, a bit of a financial lock‑step to ensure everyone’s coming and going as promised.

    Quick Takeaway

So, if you’re planning a trip, buckle up: you might need to add a $15,000 line item to your travel budget. Keep an eye on the deadlines, or you’ll wind up in a debt‑free “leave the U.S.” saga.

Travellers head to the security checkpoint at Denver International Airport.

Denver International Airport: Where Travelers Conjure Their Checkpoints

Picture this: a bustling crowd hustles through the security gate at Denver International Airport, ready to conquer the skies. Though the journey begins here, there’s a new twist on the itinerary that the US State Department is rolling out.

    What’s the Hype?

The pilot program is targeted at visitors from certain nations—so far, Zambia and Malawi lead the list. The motive? Addressing the toll of high overstay rates and tightening the top-up on countries lacking reliable monitoring systems.

    Why It Matters

    • It covers both tourist and business visas.
    • It’s a wrap‑up for travelers who might raise eyebrows while strutting through the USA.
    • Essentially, the aim is to keep the U.S. on its toes without tagging everyone under a blanket of suspicion.
    Bottom Line

In a nutshell, the State Department is testing a special check‑in for citizens from specific countries—starting with Zambia and Malawi. Anyone flagged due to overstay concerns or monitoring gaps will go through an extra layer of scrutiny, affecting both leisure and work trips.

    Tougher measures against African countries

US Visa Crackdown: Over 500,000 Overstays in 2023

    Trump’s New Target: African Nations

Last year, more than half a million people found themselves pushed beyond their visas in the U.S. The number sounds like a headline, but it’s a real story of folks who thought “travel visa” was a Tinder match.

President Trump has rolled out tighter rules in recent months that zero in on several African countries. If you belong to one of those nations, you’ll want to read the fine print—otherwise you might end up doing the airport shuffle that feels like a practice run for a new dance craze.

    Why Does This Matter Now?

    • 2026 FIFA World Cup – soon to be hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
    • 2028 Olympic Games – slated to spotlight San Francisco.

With these mega-sport events on the horizon, social media has gone into overdrive. “What if my coaching staff says I’m ineligible?” many African athletes are asking, as the latest visa tweaks threaten to throw a wrench into their dream under the Olympic lights.

Visa Waiver Programme: Where’s the Africa?

Today, about forty countries—primarily European—can visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa. Shockingly, none of those include an African nation. The only stray Middle Eastern country that actually makes the cut is Qatar.

    What’s Next for Aspiring Travelers?

Think this could be a calm high‑school hallway—probably not. The next big event could literally be a “fast‑ball” in your travel plans. Keep an eye out, and maybe bring an extra snack for the airport waiting game.

  • What happens when the ‘Harlem Shake’ causes a stir with employers?

What happens when the ‘Harlem Shake’ causes a stir with employers?

You may have heard of the latest global internet dance sensation, ‘the Harlem Shake’.

Perhaps you’ve even participated in one of these 30 second dance videos which are proving hugely popular on the social media site YouTube However Jemma Pugh, Solicitor, and Susan Evans, Partner, at Lester Aldridge LLP explain what happens when employers get all shaken up by their staff’s antics.
Keen to be a part of this craze, students from Oxford University’s St Hilda’s College recently made their own ‘Harlem Shake’ video.  At 11.30pm, a group of around 30 students went to the library to perform the stunt.  The video, which apparently took just 7 minutes to make, has been viewed over 5,000 times since it was posted on YouTube. The students can be seen dancing on the library chairs and tables in fancy dress.
Was this all a bit of harmless fun? Well, not for Calypso Nash, a Classics graduate and the librarian on shift at the time.  It has been widely reported that she has now been dismissed for not preventing the ‘Harlem Shake’ from taking place.  The students have said that the librarian was not involved in organising the prank, nor did she take part.  They say that Ms Nash could not have stopped it and have called for her to be reinstated.
The College has not released a statement nor made any comment on this dismissal as yet.  Therefore, we are unaware of the full story at the moment.  However, it is possible that the College considers that Ms Nash’s actions (or lack thereof) amounted to gross misconduct.
It’s probably worth reminding ourselves of the law on what is and isn’t a fair dismissal.  Misconduct is, of course, one of the five potentially fair reasons for dismissal under s98 Employment Rights Act 1996.  ‘Gross misconduct’ is misconduct which is so serious it justifies dismissal without notice and without a previous warning.  Whether misconduct is ‘gross’ will most often be a question of fact and depend largely on the particular circumstances and the type of work being carried out.  Examples of gross misconduct should be set out in an employer’s disciplinary policy and normally include theft, violence and serious negligence – the ‘Harlem Shake’ is not usually listed as a specific offence.
It’s possible that the College considers that Ms Nash has committed a serious breach of health and safety regulations by allowing the students to stand on the chairs and tables, or perhaps it assumed that she orchestrated the dance.  Either way, for this dismissal to be fair, a reasonable investigation should have been carried out to ascertain the facts of the matter before acting.
An employer must ensure that they follow a fair procedure when dismissing an employee in order to protect themselves against claims of unfair dismissal.  Generally, an employee is entitled to make a claim of unfair dismissal against their employer if they were employed for at least one year ending with the date of dismissal (this has been increased to two years for those whose employment commenced on or after 6 April 2012).
Assuming this was the librarian’s first offence, it is possible for an employer to dismiss fairly following one incident of gross misconduct but, once again, they should carry out a reasonable investigation of the issues first and ideally have a disciplinary hearing or meeting with the employee, in line with the ACAS code of practice .
The employee should then be informed of the decision in writing, and given the right to appeal the decision.  Unless an employer is satisfied that the employee’s conduct amounts to gross misconduct, they should issue a series of warnings prior to dismissal.
Perhaps most importantly, the decision to dismiss must fall within the band of reasonable responses available to a reasonable employer in those circumstances; if a claim is made by an employee, an Employment Tribunal will not substitute its own view of what the outcome should have been but will instead decide whether or not the employer acted reasonably.
In this case, assuming that a fair procedure had been followed, it all turns on whether the College’s decision to dismiss was within the “band of reasonable responses” open to an employer.  What do you think? Was it reasonable to dismiss the librarian?

  • GitHub CEO to step down

GitHub’s CEO: The Exit, a Fresh Start

Thomas Dohmke, the long‑time face of GitHub, just dropped the mic to step down. He’ll stay on board until year end, but in the after‑party he’s planning a solo act as a founder again.

    What the rollout looks like

    • Dohmke will stay until December 31 and then bounce out.
    • Microsoft, which owns GitHub, won’t hand the reins to a single replacement.
    • The GitHub team will now answer to a squad of Microsoft execs.

Why the move feels like a win

In his blog, Dohmke highlighted the platform’s staggering scale:

    • Over 1 billion repos and forks—that’s a lot of code copies.
    • More than 150 million developers spread across the globe.
    • Open‑source projects keeping the pipeline humming and AI contributions doubling last year.
    • “Our presence in companies of any size is unmatched,” he wrote.

    But the fresh challenges loom

GitHub’s got a tough new sibling in the AI space: Google, Cursor, and a few others are sharpening their programming‑tool guns.

Time will tell if this pivot lets the platform keep its super‑star status—or if the competition will snatch up a few lines of code.

  • Nuclear startup Deep Fission goes public in a curious SPAC

Nuclear startup Deep Fission goes public in a curious SPAC

Nuclear startup Deep Fission announced Monday that it has gone public in a reverse merger, netting the company $30 million.

    No, it’s not 2021.

The startup is proposing to build small, cylindrical nuclear power plants and lower them into 30-inch diameter holes drilled one mile down into the Earth. By burying the reactors, the company hopes to solve several problems that plague current reactors, including concerns over meltdowns and potential terrorist attacks.

Deep Fission’s 15-megawatt reactors are cooled using pressurized water, the same type found in nuclear submarines and many existing power plants.

Earlier this year, Deep Fission inked a deal with data center developer Endeavor to build 2 gigawatts of underground reactors.

As recently as April, the startup had been attempting to raise a $15 million seed round. In August, Deep Fission and nine other nuclear fission startups were selected to be a part of the Department of Energy’s Reactor Pilot Program, essentially a streamlined permitting process.

Under the terms of the reverse merger with four-year-old Surfside Acquisition Inc., the offering was priced at $3 per share, below the customary $10 that other SPACs target. The new entity will retain the Deep Fission name, and though its shares aren’t yet trading, it says it intends to quote on the OTCQB.

The circumstances around the SPAC — the share price, the selected equity market, and the timing of the transaction — suggest that Deep Fission wasn’t able to raise cash from new or existing shareholders, who first capitalized the company with a $4 million check last year.

The proceeds of the merger give the startup a bit more runway than its ill-fated seed round would have, but it also imposes SEC reporting costs for what is likely a small company operating in a very expensive sector. Deep Fission is hoping to start its first reactor by July 2026.

  • AI translation tech Palabra gets backing from Reddit co-founder's venture firm

A startup called Palabra AI, which develops an AI-powered speech translation engine, is tackling one of the more difficult aspects of teaching large language models (LLMs) to understand multiple languages.

Today, LLMs make it easier to convert text from one language to another, but speech translation is not as simple, according to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

“AI can generate content and translate text. But [Speech] Translation is a unique problem because it requires real-time language switching, and the voice also needs to sound human,” Ohanian said.

Ohanian and his venture firm Seven Seven Six (776) believe that Palabra AI could be an answer to that problem. That’s why the firm is leading an $8.4 million pre-seed round into the startup. The round also saw participation from Creator Ventures along with individual investors, including Instacart co-founder Max Mullen, former a16z partner Anne Lee Skates, former DeepMind Head of Product at Mehdi Ghissassi, and Namat Bahram.

Seven Seven Six’s Ohanian also noted that Palabra’s combination of product execution and team expertise pushed the firm to invest.

“With Palabra, the translation layer works very smoothly. The company has a strong AI research team that does high-quality work around speech. Plus, the startup has made great choices in product design and quality of output,” he added.

Palabra was founded by Artem Kukharenko and Alexander Kabakov in 2023. Kukharenko, a former machine learning engineer at Samsung, said that he has lived in various countries as a digital nomad and faced problems with languages. That’s why he wanted to combine his machine learning experience to solve for real-time translation.

“Many other companies have tried to solve the translation problem. But when they combined different pieces of tech, including speech-to-text and text-to-speech APIs while translating, the latency number increased, and the translation didn’t feel real-time. With Palabra, we have been able to bring down the latency to 800ms, making our translation seamless and real-time,” he told TechCrunch over a call.

Kukharenko added that the company has built a custom data pipeline to make it easy for the startup to add support for a new language within weeks. He said that at the end of this pipeline, Palabra places a human interpreter who checks for quality of the output. The startup said that its algorithm also accounts for different scenarios like noisy environments and interruptions.

Palabra AI has both consumer and business-facing translation products. The company offers a desktop app — for both Mac and Windows — that works with popular video calling apps, including Google Meet, Zoom, Discord, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. The app can support translation in over 30 languages, which means you can listen to someone speaking in their native tongue in your choice of language. This could be handy for calls that involve participants of various nationalities.Image Credits:Palabra

On its website, Palabra says that its desktop app will soon support native translation features for content sites like YouTube, Netflix, Twitch, and Vimeo.

You receive 30 minutes of translation free each month. For a higher limit, you can pay for plans starting at $25 per month for 60 minutes of translation across apps.

The startup provides APIs and SDKs to enterprises to integrate translation into their products.

Currently, its technology is powering video platforms such as Agora for live multilingual streams. Plus, language-service providers like GIS Group are using Palabra’s tools alongside human interpreters. The company said multiple event organizers also utilize its tech to provide multilingual streams.

Palabra has tough competition in the translation market. On the consumer end, startups like Y Combinator-backed EzDubs are building apps that work for in-person or call conversations. Earlier this year, Google also launched real-time translation for video calls on Meet. On the business end of things, startups like Dubai-based Camb.AI are building translation tech to broadcast live events in multiple languages.

To stand out, Palabra is currently working on a new streaming prediction model, which could result in a drastic drop in latency. It is also working on supporting translation for over 10,000 simultaneous audio streams.

    Welcome to the Detox Dive!

Ever heard of detox and wondered if it’s just the word for “clean out”? In the wild world of drug rehab, it’s the first rite of passage – the stepping stone that steers you toward a solid recovery journey.

    What Exactly Is Detox?

    • A physical shake‑up to rid the body of chemicals.
    • A mental reset that tackles cravings and anxiety.
    • The solid foundation that lets the rest of rehab lean on it.

    Why It’s a Game‑Changer

    Physical Perks

    • Restores sleep cycles – nobody wants to function on caffeine.
    • Boosts immune response; your body gets its groove back.
    • Reduces liver strain, giving organs a breather.

    Psychological Perks

    • Cleanses the mind, making it less foggy.
    • Reduces cravings, so you’re less likely to relapse.
    • Builds self‑confidence because “I did it!” becomes a reality.

    Detox as the Bedrock

Think of detox as the foundation of a house. Without it, the rest of the structure may crumble. Once your body is clean and your mind is re‑calibrated, the healing process hits the real magic.

    Why Professionals Are Key

    • Safe dosage and timing.
    • Continuous monitoring for withdrawal.
    • Immediate help if complications pop up.

    Challenges on the Road

Detox isn’t always smooth sailing. Common bumps include:

    • Severe withdrawal symptoms.
    • Alcohol or drug cravings that re‑appear.
    • Staying focused while juggling physical discomfort.

    How to Tackle Them

    • Combine medication with counseling.
    • Set up a supportive circle.
    • Mimic real‑world triggers in a safe setting.

    Detox + Rehab = a Powerful Combo

When detox is coupled with comprehensive rehab – therapy, skill‑building, and support groups – the outcome is a far stronger, more lasting recovery.

    Wrap‑Up

Detox isn’t just a “clean‑up” step. It’s the strategic launch pad that sets the entire rehab mission in motion. With professional guidance, proactive strategies, and a dash of inner resilience, you can transform detox into a triumph and pave the road to a healthier, drug‑free life. Ready to take that first step?

    Understanding Detox in Drug Rehab

Figuring Out the Right Detox Recipe

Detox isn’t a one‑size‑fits‑all “quick cleanse.” It’s the sturdy base that teams up with recovery, catering to the unique flavor of every individual. Here’s a quick rundown of the most common ways people tackle it:

    1. Medical Detox – The Super‑Safe Route

What it’s about: A team of medical pros sits on the sidelines, handling the gritty side effects of withdrawal. Their goal? Keep you safe, soothe the discomfort, and reduce any health risks.

    • Professors in a lab coat, not a therapist in a trench coat – that’s the vibe.
    • Think of it as a medically supervised “reset” with no surprises.
    • Perfect for those who need close monitoring while letting the body do its healing.

    2. Holistic Detox – The Wellness Mix‑up

What it’s about: The whole hexagon—body, mind, emotions—gets an attitude. This route stitches in alternatives like yoga, acupuncture, meditation, and sometimes a splash of herbal tea.

    • Probably the most “mindful” of the detox routes.
    • It’s a full‑on wellness makeover, treating every layer of you.
    • Good for those looking to balance their inner and outer worlds.

    3. Inpatient vs. Outpatient Detox – Picking Your Hangout Spot

Choosing the right setting: The decision hinges on how hot the addiction is and how much support you crave.

    • Inpatient: A locked‑door, “all‑this‑is‑for‑you” environment. Think of it like staying in a safe, dedicated hotel while you detox.
    • Outpatient: Light on the walls, heavy on flexibility. A great fit if you’re dealing with a milder addiction or need to juggle work and family.

Bottom line? The perfect detox plan is as varied as the people who need it. Whether you opt for a medically guided cleanse, a holistic wellness overlay, or the tailored comfort of inpatient or outpatient settings, it’s all about building that strong, safe foundation for recovery.

Physical and Psychological Benefits of Detox

Why Detox Isn’t Just About Bailing‑Out Your Body

Think of detox as your personal cleanup crew— it sweeps away the chemical clutter so your body can rebound and your mind can finally reset.

1⃣ Clearing Out the Bad Stuff

    • The body gets rid of toxins that have been hanging around like unwanted roommates.
    • Once those nasties are gone, your organs can actually start working the way they’re meant to.

    2⃣ A Ground‑Zero for Healing

    • Detox lets your body and mind hit a sweet spot of stability, making the next steps in rehab smoother.
    • With a balanced system, your brain can lock onto the recovery plan without the constant hum of chemicals.

    3⃣ Brain‑Boosting Benefits

When the harmful substances are flushed out, you’ll notice:

    • Sharper focus that helps you follow therapy sessions more attentively.
    • A clearer mindset that keeps you engaged and less tempted to slip back into old habits.

In short—detox is the kickoff that gets your whole body and mind geared up for a full‑scale recovery. No fluff, just good‑old-fashioned healing.

Detox as a Foundation for Successful Rehabilitation

    Detox: the Cha‑Cha of Recovery

1⃣ Why Detox is the Beat You’ll Never Skip

  • Detox* isn’t just a fancy word for “clean‑up.” Think of it as the opening drumroll that tells your brain, “Hold tight, we’re about to dance.”
  • Clear the stage so therapy can take the spotlight.
  • Tame the withdrawal “bumpy ride.”
  • Build a solid base for the whole rehab routine.
  • 2⃣ The Low‑down on What Detox does

    How
    It helps
    What you get
Relieves cravings No more break‑neck urges.
Cools adrenaline Your heart stops racing.
Sets the mood “Hey, I’ve got this!” vibes.

    3⃣ The Secret Sauce

Missing a good detox? You’re basically trying to juggle while wearing a blindfold. It’s the foundation—the concrete on which every wall (your future freedom) is built.

  • Bottom line?* Detox is the pre‑game that makes the rest of the rehabilitation season a smashing hit.
  • Role of Professional Supervision in Detox

Why Your Detox Journey Needs a Pro in the Mix

Picture this: you’re cleaning out your body, craving that relief, but all the while an invisible champion is keeping an eye on you. That champion is your medical supervisor, and trust me—they’re the unsung hero of detox.

    24/7 Watchful Eye

    • Never let your body surprise you again. Think of the supervisor as your personal security guard—they’re on call whenever a hiccup pops up.
    • They catch those awkward “I feel a little sick” moments before they turn into full-blown emergencies.
    • So if you’re feeling that shaky mid‑session, you know someone is already preparing to handle it.

    Customized Detox Plans

No two bodies are the same. The good news? Your doctor can tailor the detox plan just for you—like a bespoke suit that fits every inch.

    • They’ll balance the intensity, the fluids, and the meds so you’re not going from “I’m fine” to “I need a doctor” in a heartbeat.
    • That’s not a rumor—it’s real science that makes detox feel less like a trial and more like a smooth ride.

    Feel the Difference

With a professional backing you, detox doesn’t feel like a solo, chaotic experiment—it becomes a guided, safe transition. Your body gets to stay in the front seat while the pros do the driving.

    Challenges and Considerations in Detox

Unlocking the Real Deal About Detox

Detox isn’t a walk in the park. It can feel like a wild ride with scary withdrawal crashes and other hiccups that shout, “Hey, I’m not a one‑size-fits‑all situation!” The key? A personalized, breezy plan that tackles your unique vibes.

    • Watch out for hard pulls – think muscle soreness, mood swings, and those nagging cravings.
    • No cookie‑cutter rulebook – every recovery story has its own plot twists.
    • Blend it in – tie detox into a full rehab adventure. That’s how you honor each personal journey.

Remember, it takes a tuned‑in approach to keep that feedback loop steady and ensure the detox phase feels like a supportive teammate, not a rogue tiger.

Integrated Approaches to Detox and Rehab

Teamwork Makes the Detox Dream Work

When a medical squad and a therapy crew walk hand‑in‑hand, the journey out of addiction turns from a maze into a guided tour.

    Why the union matters

    • Medical pros keep the body clean—think detox labs, meds, and monitoring.
    • Therapists tackle the mind—cognitive tweaks, mindfulness, and good old heartfelt conversations.
    • Both sides cover physical and mental health, so no stone is left unturned.

Holistic healing: more than just flushing the system

It’s not just about washing out toxins; it’s a full‑blown plan that goes deep into the psyche, nourishes the body, and opens up new pathways for a fresh start.

What the rehab package looks like

    • Customised medication regimens for safe detox.
    • Emotion‑counselling sessions to uncover underlying triggers.
    • Mindfulness workshops to build resilience.
    • Physical activity—yoga, walking, or a fun dance routine—to give the body a reset.
    • Post‑discharge follow‑ups that keep the momentum alive.

    Takeaway

When doctors and therapists collaborate tightly, the detox process turns into a comprehensive recovery adventure—full of health, hope, and a dash of humor to keep spirits high.

    Conclusion

Why Detox is the Real MVP of Rehab

Detox isn’t just another checkpoint on the road to sobriety—it’s the launchpad. When you’re kicking a habit that’s tangled up in your bloodstream and your mind, getting that first clean slate can feel like stepping into a fresh arena where every move counts.

    The Detox Advantage

    • Smooths the Path for Therapy: A clean body means therapy can hit the right notes without the noise of withdrawal.
    • Brings Down the Fire: It tackles those nasty cravings and nervous ticks that can derail a treatment plan.
    • Creates a Stable Base: Think of it as laying down a rock-solid foundation before you build the rest of your recovery story.

    Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

It’s not a solo act. Medical pros, counselors, and holistic healers join forces, each adding their own chords. Together, they map out a rehab record that’s as unique as the person walking into the room.

    Wrapping It Up

Once the detox curtain falls, you’re not just fresh; you’re primed. The stage is set, and with the right support crew, the follow‑up steps gain a real chance to stick—making the journey from “I‑can‑do‑this” to “I-love-my-new‑life” a winning one.

  • The Culinary Shift: Chefs and Creators Redefining Food’s Future

The Culinary Shift: Chefs and Creators Redefining Food’s Future

    When Recipes Throw a Tantrum

    • Prep like a rebel: chefs are remixing classic sauces with a dash of audacity.
    • Serve side‑by‑side: blending tradition with a bold twist.
    • Drop the map: breaking the rule that every measurement must be exact.

Once upon a time, kitchens were a museum—same pots, same spices, recipes that simply traveled from grandma to great‑grandma, untouched and immaculate. But now, chefs and content creators are smashing that glassy tradition, daring to break the old rules. This culinary revolt is championed by the brilliant Francesca Della Penna, who reminds us that recipes don’t have to stay frozen in the 1800s; a little chaos can turn a timeless dish into something spectacularly fresh.

Turnover Tradition: A Taste‑Tornado of Culture & Creativity

Think of culinary heritage as a living, breathing organism—no more dusty museum exhibits. Today’s chefs are on a mission to spin the oldies into something that sings to the new‑gen palates.

Why “Turnover” is the New Trend

Instead of just copying grandma’s recipes, chefs are blending their own stories with flavors from every corner of the globe. The result? A global fusion that respects tradition yet feels brand‑new.

    Case in Point: Alissa Timoshkina

    • Born in Siberia, Alissa is the mastermind behind Kapusta: Vegetable‑Forward Recipes from Eastern Europe.
    • She takes humble staples—cabbage, beetroot, mushrooms—and gives them a modern makeover with innovative techniques.
    • Her goal? Keep the comforting, “family‑chef” vibes while making the dishes fit today’s foodie trends and diet trends.

And Over in Spain’s Basque Country

Chef Josean Alija of Michelin‑starred Nerua in Bilbao is vanguard of pintxo reinvention. He marries age‑old fermentation with cutting‑edge gastronomy.

    • He partners with local producers to honor seasonality and region.
    • His dishes are a homage to Basque heritage with a shiny, modern twist—think “old school meets future school” in every bite.

    Why This Matters

These culinary journeys demonstrate that food tradition isn’t static. It’s living, evolving, and on a tasty adventure—all thanks to chefs who dare to remix history with their own cultural DNA.

    Bringing the past outdoors

Chef Davide Nanni: Bringing Italy’s Hearth to the Great Outdoors

Turning the Wild into a Dining Adventure

Forget the sleek marble countertops—Chef Davide Nanni thinks the real kitchen is wherever the fire sparks and the woods sing. His Instagram feeds show him hunched over a pit, coaxing flame to dance above pots that are literally as old as the hills of Abruzzo.

    Three Elements, One Sizzle

    • Earth – The ground that cradles the fire pit.
    • Fire – The living core that sears and flavors.
    • Wood – The traditional fuel for that smoky touch.

    It’s Not Nostalgia, It’s Reinvention

Round up some Arrosticini—those lumpy lamb skewers that’ll melt your heart and your palate. They’re chewed over an open flame, turning them from rustic to runway. And the pasta? Handmade with hand‑crafted paddling, so the dough tastes like it was crafted by grandparent and grandmother.

Why the Old is New Again

    • Authenticity: Every bite tells a story of old farm life.
    • Storytelling: Food becomes an adventure, not just a meal.
    • Emotion: The crackle of the fire adds a soundtrack to every forkful.

    Join the Revolution

So next time you’re tempted to order a pizza, consider the chef who cooks with earth, fire, and wood—because the original Italian drama unfolds right in the open air. Whether you’re a foodie or a footloose wanderer, Davide Nanni proves that sometimes the simplest tools make the most unforgettable dishes.

    Lamb tastes different cooked outdoors.

Lamb on the Wild Side: Outdoor Cooking Delights

Picture this: a sizzling grill set up on a meadow, the wind whispering through the leaves, and a perfectly marbled rack of lamb dancing over coals. The result? A flavor profile that can’t be replicated inside the confines of a regular kitchen.

Why the Great Outdoors Makes a Difference

    • Natural heat: Sun‑baked coals and fresh airflow keep the meat juicy and tender.
    • Earthy aroma: The scent of wood smoke mingles with the aroma of grass, giving that unmistakable “campfire” kick.
    • Authenticity factor: It feels like you’re eating a dish that’s as old as the land itself.

    Meet Nanni – the Trendsetter

Nanni isn’t just whipping up lamb. He’s part of a sweeping movement across Europe where chefs ditch the polished server counters for nature’s very own dining room. Think of it as a culinary escape into the wild, where every bite is a nod to both sustainability and heritage.

He’s got a vision: fresh, local ingredients, minimal waste, and a palpable connection to the earth. And the result? A menu that feels like the next big thing rather than just another foodie fad.

    Why It’s a Go‑Get For Foodies

    1. Uniqueness: Each outdoor session is a seasonally fresh experience.
    2. Eco‑friendly: Reduced refrigeration, lower carbon footprint.
    3. Community vibe: Guests share stories while the grill blazes.

And let’s be real—there’s something downright satisfying about clinking kebab sticks under the stars versus a disposable menu in a plastic tray. Nanni’s approach has caught the eye of both locals and the occasional wandering tourist looking for that “authentic” taste of Europe.

    Bottom Line

Outdoor lamb isn’t just a culinary experiment—it’s a reminder that the best tastes often come from the simplest places: the great outdoors, a good fire, and a curious palate ready to explore. Bold claim? Might be true. The taste? Absolutely unforgettable!

    A tribal way of eating

    Nomadic Dining Takes the Spotlight

Forget your usual restaurant routine—turn the dining table into a campfire, and let the wild be your sous‑chef. This trend, the heart of the Turnover Tradition, invites chefs to cook in the great outdoors, re‑connecting us with the messy, glorious reality of food.

Into the Woods with Nomadic Dinners

    • Guests trot deep into forests for a fireside feast that feels like a throwback to ancient communal meals.
    • It’s all about storytelling, not just Michelin‑star plating.
    • Chefs showcase foraged ingredients, ancestral techniques, and the universal joy of eating under the sky.

The vibe? Think “gourmet meets campfire”. These aren’t your typical fine‑dining indulgences; they’re interactive, sensory adventures that turn a meal into a narrative.

    Why We Love it

Today’s foodie is hungry for experiences, not just food. This move taps into our primal instinct that eating is more than calorie intake—it’s a shared, communal story.

Social Media: The Amplifier of Tradition

Social platforms are turning chefs into superheroes, and content creators into the world’s riveting storytellers.

    • TikTok, Instagram, YouTube turn dusty family recipes into viral sensations.
    • A study in Indonesia shows how millennials are reviving local dishes through reels and stories, boosting local tourism.
    • These platforms preserve culinary heritage and bring it to new audiences.

    Meet Dylan Hollis

Picture a guy with a laugh that could turn a kibble of potatoes into prime comedy. Dylan uses a treasure trove of 340+ vintage cookbooks to resurrect forgotten American recipes, sharing the backstory—and the laugh lines—in slick videos that keep viewers hooked.

    Gluten Alleviating Fun in Italy

In the hills of Abruzzo, a gluten‑free aficionado wields recipe magic, remixing her mother’s classics to make the region’s flavors accessible to everyone.

    • Her banner? “Traditionally Gluten Free.”
    • She proves that heritage dishes can be reimagined for modern dietary needs.
    • Each bite feels like a bite of the sun—flavorful, bright, and inclusive.
    Bottom Line

Nomadic dining, combined with social‑media storytelling, rewrites how we eat, making it a living, breathing story. And as platforms spin these tales into viral charts, culture, flavor, and community get the ticket to the front of the dining line. Enjoy!
Coeliacs need not be deprived of pasta forever.

Forget the Pasta‑No‑Way Rule: Coeliacs Get Their Italian Fix!

Francesca Della Penna has taken the culinary world by storm, proving that a gluten‑free life doesn’t have to mean saying goodbye to that dreamy plate of spaghetti forever. Her kitchen is a blend of time‑honored recipes, but with a twist that speaks straight to anyone who wants a dish that feels both nostalgic and brand new.

    • She preserves the heart‑and‑soul of traditional Italian meals.
    • She adds story‑telling flair that turns a simple plate into a mini‑drama.
    • And the result? Classic pasta that’s healthier without compromising taste.

    From Storybooks to Plates

Imagine biting into your favorite pasta and feeling like you’re in a page of a beloved family memoir. That’s exactly what Francesca offers. Her ability to weave personal anecdotes into recipes doesn’t just make the food delicious – it makes it unforgettable.

Meet Frankie Gaw: The Fusion Mastermind

On the flipside of gluten‑free innovation comes Frankie Gaw, a Taiwanese‑American food influencer who’s seriously shaking up what we think of as “American classics.” His YouTube series, Turning American Classics Asian, has quickly become an internet phenomenon.

    • Mulled mochi‑Twinkies give your sweet tooth a tropical twist.
    • Rustic miso mac ‘n’ cheese turns comfort food into a cozy cultural fusion.
    • All of these dishes are part celebration, part culinary experiment – and entirely shareable.

    The Power of Playful Fusion

Frankie’s creations prove that fusion cuisine can be delightfully playful while staying deeply personal. When you’re sharing a bowl of miso mac ‘n’ cheese with friends, you’re not just having a snack – you’re telling a story about how continents can collide on a plate.

    Why It Matters

Both Francesca and Frankie remind us that food doesn’t have to follow rigid rules. One can be gluten‑free and still indulge in pasta, or one can turn a beloved American dish into something sparks a whole new cultural conversation. In a world where authenticity and humor both thrive, these chefs are leading the charge, one dish at a time.

    The future of ‘Turnover Tradition’

What’s Cooking in the Food Future?

In the culinary world, three major trends are taking the lead. If you’re curious about tomorrow’s menu, here’s what’s shaping the plate.

    Trend 1: Hyper‑Personalised Fusion Cuisine

National kitchens are spilling out of their borders, letting folks mix the flavors of their heritage with the tastes of the world. Traditional dishes stay alive, but get a new lens—think of grandma’s Sunday stew with a dash of Thai chili or a classic pizza topped with miso‑marinated mushrooms.

    • Home cooks blend family recipes with global twists.
    • Restaurants craft menus that feel like a personal diary written in sauce.
    • Every bite tells a story—your story.

Trend 2: The Human Touch Counter‑Attack on AI Food Fads

AI can now churn out recipes, meal plans, and even food pics—but the real magic is the human touch. Hands‑on cooking and interactive dining are becoming prized antidotes to a digital food culture. People crave the authenticity of a chef crafting dishes live, folks meeting strangers over a shared bowl of soup, and the smell of fresh batter in the air.

    • In‑person dining starts to outshine click‑tap menus.
    • Cooking classes become community events, not just tutorials.
    • Everyone’s photo‑ready food stops feeling like a photo shoot and starts feeling like an art project.

While the third trend was omitted in your original text, the two above will keep most of humanity’s taste buds humming. Stay tuned: the future of food is all about personal flair and real‑world flavors.

    Back to the fire.

Flames of Flavor: A Culinary Revolt

When it comes to food, people are hungry for more than just a recipe line‑up. They crave a full‑sensory feast—the aroma, the crunch, the stories that run through every bite.

    Diving Into Food Adventure

    • Beyond the Plate: Travelers now chase genuine, hands‑on culinary escapades—think cooking with local chefs, wandering bustling markets, and decoding the cultural rituals behind each dish.
    • New‑Age Food Guides: Culinary schools and tour planners are pivoting away from generic menu tips toward immersive experiences that blend taste with tradition.

    Renaissance in the Kitchen

The New Culinary Renaissance isn’t a fleeting fad—it’s a wave reshaping how we eat, cook, and cherish food heritage. This season, we’ve spotted athletes pioneers: a chef resurrecting a forgotten Armenian recipe, a TikTok star bringing old dishes back into the spotlight, and even a nomadic dining caravan roaming through forested backdrops.

    Heritage Meets Tomorrow

Tradition isn’t just a story from the past—it’s a blueprint for the future. Each revival, each rediscovered recipe, stitches a richer, more flavorful tapestry that’s ready to be explored, enjoyed, and shared.

    2024 Growth Highlights

    • Food deliveries through Chowdeck grew more than sixfold from the previous year.
    • The company already surpassed its 2024 total before July.

    • Scale to 500 by the end of 2026, adding 2–3 new stores each week.

Chowdeck Bites Into Africa’s Food Delivery Frenzy

Short‑haul delivery can feel like a buffet of competitors—everyone’s shouting “we’ve got the most delicious pizza on the block.” But Chowdeck has been plate‑spotting successes in a crowded restaurant of enterprises like DoorDash. Meanwhile, quick‑commerce often ends up as a money‑gobbler. Some European players, like Gorillas and Getir, splashed out billions only to pull back or merge. In the sub‑Saharan scene, Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy‑you‑might‑truly get a different vibe around profitability.

What sets Chowdeck apart? The company has been making cash before its latest fundraising round, and founder Aluko insists it never jumps into a city or vertical unless the revenue can hit break‑even in two weeks—no “just for the look, we’re here” kind of expansion.

Sliding into Ghana Like A Smooth Satay

May 2024: Chowdeck spreads into neighbor Ghana, taking a mindful leap. Within three months they’re ringing up 1,000 orders a day—and not because of paid ads. Aluko says they’re tapping into an “inside‑squeeze” of people craving local eats mixed with global flavor. Sizzle alert: they’re ramping up to 5,000 orders a day by September 2025.

Turning Dark Stores Into A Sexy Side Hustle

Next stop, “dark stores.” Think fridge‑time food hubs that feed restaurants and grocery orders—quick, local, and easy to scale. Chowdeck’s calculated a “cheat sheet” that’s actually a productivity playbook: if a kitchen needs a hit of inventory on it, the new stores can supply it in seconds.

Software Meets Eats: The Software of Food

June’s highlight: Chowdeck snapped up Mira, a point‑of‑sale service that’s been locking “inventory in real‑time” for African food and hospitality firms. Mira’s handy tools route orders, burn costs, and keep suppliers on their toes. Chowdeck’s making itself a vertical SaaS‑plus‑logistics powerhouse.

Why the Investors Liked This Pitch

    • Local know‑how meets global models. When Jumia bowed out, outsiders like Glovo, Bolt Food, and Yango took the spotlight. Some of those names have since pulled out of Nigeria and Ghana, leaving a map of opportunity that Chowdeck is actively carving.
    • Dark‑store + SaaS + last‑mile: a three‑in‑one recipe. Investors see a recipe with one end for survival hungry markets.
    • The “big picture” is a light‑fast logistics future. Partner Brian Waswani Odhiambo of Novastar Ventures emphasizes “execution and local insight.” The bullet points are short‑hand for “we’re ready to grow on a sustainability‑first base.”

    The Landscape in Short

    • Other African local food‑delivery giants: Gozem, YC‑backed Yassir, and MNT‑Halan.
    • Value drivers: continuously improving the household Delivery Portation, affording customers real-time, seamless agency of local food flows.
    • In a nutshell: the market is early, but ever‑changing.

“Everybody’s becoming a generation that orders meals online without having physically stepped into any restaurants,” Aluko said. “This is a pivotal change point.”

    Funding Fever

    • Chowdeck pulls in $2.5 million—to grow and cement a strong presence in food delivery, one of the toughest markets.
    • When they say “execution plus insight remain priority,” they’re telling investors that precision in delivery logistics is the best hedging of risk, and that the intensity of African consumer demand is profitable.

So the meal’s served—if the company keeps the flavor, the rivals will sharpen their chefs. Stay tuned: the next wave is arriving faster than you can spell “item.

‘Disappearing like dominos’: Scientists seek to save endangered species in China’s longest river

Scientists have called for additional measures to regulate shipping on the Yangtze River.

A dozen sleek grey Yangtze finless porpoises glide inside a vast pool at the Institute of Hydrobiology in Wuhan.
They are part of a project by scientists to find ways to protect and breed the rare mammals in China’s longest river.

The Yangtze River is one of the busiest inland waterways in the world with 16 major ports, and the finless porpoise has become a barometer of the river’s health.
The population of the mammal has plunged in the last decades, and scientists fear other species will follow suit.

China’s longest river is suffering as shipping traffic surges

Cargo shipping volume along the Yangtze River topped four billion metric tons in 2024, according to state media.
The traffic is damaging the waterway’s ecosystem, as evidenced by the sharp decline in the number of finless porpoises living there.
The population of the critically endangered species plunged from over 2,500 in the 1990s to just 1,012 in 2017 due to pollution, boat traffic and illegal fishing that depleted food supplies, researchers said. The finless porpoise has become a barometer of the river’s health. The change alarmed the scientific community, including veteran researcher Wang Ding. He led an international team on a 2006 search for Baiji dolphins, another species that was nearing extinction.
Despite a nine-day search, not a single dolphin was found and the Baiji was declared functionally extinct. The last captive Baiji dolphin hangs at a museum along with other rare aquatic species.

Finless porpoise is a barometer of the river’s health

“We feared that if [the finless porpoise] cannot survive in the Yangtze, the other species will, like dominoes, disappear one by one from the river,” Wang said.

Conservation efforts have sprung into place. The Yangtze River Protection Law was enacted in 2021, banning fishing for 10 years, relocating factories and prohibiting sewage and chemical runoffs into the river.

Today, the population of Yangtze finless porpoises is edging upward at around 1,300.
To protect the Chinese sturgeon, also a critically endangered species, scientists began artificially breeding and releasing thousands of the fish into the Yangtze with the hope of restoring the wild population.
Scientists have called for additional measures to regulate shipping on the waterway and for an extension of the 10-year fishing ban.

  • German Industries Warn: EU‑US Trade Deal Brings Economic Fallout

Berlin’s Green Light: Merz Gives a Cheer, But German Industry Worries About the Road Ahead

What the German Chancellor’s Big Smile Means

Chancellor Friedrich Merz just dropped a thumbs‑up after the European Commission president and the US president sealed a pact that everyone’s been waiting for. The headline of the day: “Good news from Brussels gets a Berlin boost!”

Industry Voices: Feeling the Relief, Eyes on the Future

    • “We’re glad things are moving forward,” said a spokesperson from the German industrial lobby.
    • “The current agreement gives us a breather, but we’re still bracing for potential losses ahead.”
    • They’re calling it a ‘temporary cushion’ during a tough global economic storm.

    Why the Concern Sticks Around

Even with the latest deal, German factories are wary that the ripple effects of new regulations and trade negotiations could hit trade margins. The industry’s voice is a mix of gratitude and cold‑war caution—“We’re happy, but we’re also keeping our guard up.”

    Bottom Line

Merz’s satisfaction marks a momentary high note, yet the business community reminds everyone: the harmony might not last if the global dance steps change. Stay tuned.

EU‑US Trade Deal: A Mixed Blessing for Germany

Ursula von der Leyen praised the new agreement with Donald Trump on Sunday as a stabilising move “in uncertain times.” The trio of influential leaders just avoided a full‑blown tariff war that could have sent the world’s biggest economies into chaos.

    What the Deal Actually Means

    • Most EU goods heading to the US now face a 15 % tariff – a sweet‑spot drop from the possible 25 % that had been on the table.
    • EU investments in the US and EU defence‑equipment purchases will also absorb that 15 % duty.
    • Car exports: 15 % (down from 25 %) – so drivers can keep a little more cash in their pockets.
    • Steel: the hefty 50 % tariff stays in place – good news for US steel majors, not so much for EU exporters.

Germany’s Reactions – Sighs, Worry, and Some Trade‑Wary Jokes

Helena Melnikov, Managing Director of the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, said the deal prevents a disaster – give the country a big sigh of relief. But she whispered, “this bargain comes at a price, and spoiler alert: it’s German & European too.”

Wolfgang Niedermark, head of the Federation of German Industries, ctr‑v‑t-b (big complaint heard). Even that “mild” 15 % tariff could be a wrecking ball for Germany’s export‑driven factories.

In a “painful compromise” candidacy clash, the Federal Association of Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Service warned that supply chains will shift, costs will climb, and the German growth engine might gurgle. “We’re betting the deal will cost us jobs, prosperity, and a bit of our golden future,” they cautioned.

    Political Kudos & Skepticism

    • Chancellor Friedrich Merz flexed his ego on X, saying the pact proved “trade conflict can be averted.”
    • Yet a closer look at Trump’s track record raises doubts about whether this is a genuine commitment or a blip in a rocky relationship.
    • Michael Hüther, director at the Institute for the German Economy, echoed that concerns linger: “Trump hasn’t truly removed tariff threats from the mix.”

So, while Europe’s big boss voices optimism, Germany’s business leaders warn: this is a tightrope walk—nice to steady, but still a shaky bridge. Only time will show if the balance of freight and free trade stays in the sweet spot or tips to the other side.

Ever wondered if a bit of sunshine could help with Parkinson’s? French researchers think so. At a cutting‑edge lab linked to Grenoble University Hospital, they’re lining up tiny light beams to give the brain’s tired neurons a fresh burst of energy.

    Why a Beam of Light?

Parkinson’s roils around 10 million people now and is expected to double by 2050. Symptoms? Think tremor, stiffness, and a whole lot of “I just can’t. Move.” No cure yet, but slowing the decline is the current game plan.

    Enter the light‑stimulation trick:

    • Targets dopamine‑producing neurons – the ones that start to get gnawing by the time you notice a tremor.
    • Lights up the mitochondria inside those neurons – basically the cell’s power plants.
    • Helps the neurons function better, which could stop the disease’s march.

    How They Did It

To poke around deep inside the brain, the team built a micro‑device that’s both snug and smart. Think of it as the tiny cousin of a smartphone, but instead of a screen it sends light waves. The secret sauce? A mash‑up of electronics, photonics and nanotech – all stitched together by neurosurgeons who know their way around brain tissues.

Early Results – A Glimmer of Hope?

They’ve lit up the brains of seven patients in the early stages. Three of them showed less rapid worsening of symptoms after ongoing stimulation. The researchers say that’s still preliminary, but it’s a tidy win for the science squad.

“It’s very early days, but what we’re seeing looks promising,” says Dr. Stephan Chabardès, the neurosurgeon leading the charge.

Heads up: If the next, more extensive trials confirm a stable, tangible benefit, the team will roll it out on a larger scale.

    Looking Ahead

While the idea feels like something out of a sci‑fi flick, it’s actually medical science at work. If light could re‑energize the brain’s tired cells, maybe Parkinson’s isn’t as grim as once thought.

Stay tuned for updates on this bright‑spirited breakthrough. Who knew that a few laser beams could light up life for millions of people?

  • Ryanair Expands Free Cabin Bag Limits – Discover the New Size Rules!

    Ryanair’s Big Move: Free Carry‑On Bags—Coming Soon!

Why the hype? A quick rundown.

    • Free carry‑on allowance: Pack your essentials without paying a cent.
    • New specs: Bags up to 45 × 23 × 12 cm (about the size of a small backpack) and 10 kg max weight.
    • No more “extra bag” headaches: Straight into the cabin, no hidden fees.

    What’s the timeline?

Ryanair says the change will roll out “over the coming weeks.” So buckle up for a smoother in‑air experience!

Ryanair’s Bag Bonanza: More Room, Less Hassle!

Picture this: you’re scrolling through flight options, eye‑balled at Ryanair’s notorious price tags, and then—boom!—they just dropped an extra 20% on the free cabin‑bag allowance. That’s right, your snazzy tote has roomier dimensions to hold all your holiday treasures (and maybe a secret stash of snacks).

    The New EU Hand‑Luggage Playbook

European lawmakers have taken a giant leap for travellers, capping hand‑luggage sizes and making it easier than ever to throw things in the overhead bin without the dreaded “extra fee” kicker.

    • Personal bag size cap: 40 × 30 × 15 cm. Think handbags, backpacks, or that guerilla‑loom that’s actually a tote.
    • Hand‑luggage max: 100 cm total dimension and 7 kg in weight. A more generous cap than the usual 45 cm/10 kg rule.
    • Hands‑free rule: you’re allowed two pieces—one personal bag and one small hand‑luggage—on every EU flight.

    Will it Take Hold?

But hold onto that passport: the proposal still needs a 55% thumbs‑up from the 27 EU member states. A few might tweak it a bit during the negotiation dance beginning this month. If it wins the vote, the rules go into force across the entire EU—every seat, every flight.

Airlines: Ready for the New Map

Airlines aren’t sitting on seats—so much so-called “bag whisperers” are already prepping their fleets, re‑studying layer structures, and coaching staff on how to handle the new rules with a smile.

Bottom line: the sky isn’t the only place your belongings can fly. Ryanair’s boost + a relaxed EU hand‑luggage law might just put a spring in your step. Pack up, breathe a sigh of relief, and get ready to soar without the fear of a stomach‑ache stack of fees.

Ryanair increases free cabin baggage allowance

Ryanair Expands Your Free Bag: More Space, Less Hassle

Good news, flight‑fans! Ryanair is about to make your in‑flight packing a bit easier. In the next few weeks, the airline will bump up the size of the free personal item it lets you bring on board.

    What’s Changing?

    • Old size: 40 × 25 × 20 cm – that’s a 20‑litre bag. Perfect for a toiletry kit or a small set of essentials.
    • New size: 40 × 30 × 20 cm – now you get 24 litres. This extra width gives you a little more room for those last‑minute souvenirs or a larger tote.

    Why It Matters

The tweak aligns Ryanair with European guidelines, so if you already own a Ryanair‑compatible cabin bag, you won’t have to hunt for a new one. The new dimensions actually beat the standard sizes set by the European Parliament, making sure you’re covered without any extra cost.

“Our airport bag sizers are being updated soon, so you’ll notice the change over the coming weeks,” a Ryanair spokesperson assured.

    Bottom line

Next time you hop on a Ryanair flight, remember: you can now bring a slightly bigger free bag—no extra charge, no new purchase, just a little more room for all the little things that make your journey smoother.

Airlines to bring in new cabin bag dimensions by the end of the summer

New Personal Bag Rules: A4E Airlines Get Ready for Summer 2025

Airlines for Europe (A4E) just confirmed that all its member airlines will start using a fresh set of “guaranteed” dimensions for personal items by the end of the 2025 summer season. What does that mean for you? Basically it keeps travelers on the same page no matter which airline you fly with.

    What’s the Deal?

    • Guaranteed Size: Every A4E airline will set a firm limit for personal items (think tech bags, backpacks, small duffles).
    • Flexibility Left in the Air: Airlines can still allow slightly larger items if they choose to.
    • Clear Rules for All: From quick city hops to family vacations, passengers get the same simple guideline across all routes.

    Why It Matters

One of A4E’s top executives, Ourania Georgoutsakou, the managing director, explains the benefit: “By aligning our members with this proposal, we’re making travel less confusing, especially when you’re juggling a laptop, keys, and a travel mug.”

Carriers already used a version of these guidelines. For many, the existing cabin bag sizes will just stay the same because they already exceed the new limits. Big names like British Airways, Jet2 and easyJet already have roomy allowances that fit comfortably within the new framework.

    Takeaway for Passengers
    • No more surprise baggage fees lurking in the middle of your flight.
    • Uniform rules mean you can plan your suitcase once and stick to it across Europe.
    • It could keep you from spending your last euro on unexpected fees.

So pack your personal bag with confidence, knowing that whether you’re heading to Barcelona or Stockholm, the rules back your back for a smoother journey.

  • China Fires Back at Ursula von der Leyen’s G7 Speech, Calling It Baseless and Biased

The EU‑China Reset: A Drama in the Making

It’s been a whirlwind of headlines lately – you thought the EU and China were on the brink of a new partnership, and now it looks like the plans are stalling faster than a broken espresso machine.

    Why the Bad Blood

    • EU takes a swing: “We’re tired of hearing the same old excuses. It’s time for real action, not polite noise.”
    • China fires back: “You’ve been playing a game of one‑up on our turf. Your accusations have no substance.”

    Key Takeaways

The grand vision of a fresh start? It’s now hanging in a very shaky line of sight. The sharp exchanges signal more than just diplomatic tension—they’re a warning sign that longstanding mistrust still glares bright. If negotiators want any chance of success, they’ll need to ditch the rhetoric and get into the practical stuff, and that means both parties actually listening to each other’s needs.

China Fires Back at Ursula von der Leyen’s G7 Rant

At the G7 summit in Canada, the EU’s top boss, Ursula von der Leyen, launched a full‑blown attack on Beijing, accusing it of a “pattern of dominance, dependency and blackmail” in trade. China was quick to reply.

    Guo Jiakun’s “Fair‑Play” Rebuke

Guo Jiakun, the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s spokesperson, took to the podium with a mix of dignity and a punch of indignation:

    • “We are strongly dissatisfied with these baseless, biased remarks.”
    • “They’re a clear double‑standard show.”

It’s a reminder that the EU‑China vibe, which had briefly warmed up after President Trump’s tariffs knocked the world economy sideways, is far from smooth sailing.

    Trump’s Tariffs: The Catalyst

When Trump slapped tariffs on everything from steel to wheat, the EU’s export‑heavy economy scrambled. With 1.4 billion people, China looked like the “best bet” to fill the void.

Beijing, sensing an opportunity, lifted some of the sanctions on EU parliamentarians, opened talks on the EV‑trouble, and even celebrated the 50th anniversary of EU‑China relations at the same time President Xi dropped a message of “fair multilateralism” against Trump’s unilateralism.

    Xi’s Diplomatic Pep Talk

    • “Both sides should keep multilateralism alive.”
    • “We must oppose unilateralist bullying.”

Xi’s words were, as you’d expect from a Chinese leader, all about maintaining balance.

Von der Leyen Goes Full Hawk

Despite her earlier pledge to deepen ties, the EU boss fired shots at China’s “state‑led” economy, calling it a distortion machine and accusing it of over‑subsidizing and dumping goods. She pointed to China’s 2001 WTO debut, calling it the origin of the “biggest collective problem” in global trade.

Clues for the “new China shock” were in her words: “China still bills itself a developing country, but it clearly refuses to play by the established rules.” She slammed China for sinking intellectual property protections, over‑subbing, and taking over supply chains. “It’s not cool competition — it’s distortion.”

    China’s Counter‑Blow

The Foreign Ministry didn’t bow – it struck back. Critics said the EU was handing out boltons to its own firms while starving China of competition. In turn, the Chinese side painted the EU as “European preference” and overly protective, accusing them of “over‑anxiety” instead of real over‑capacity.

    • “The EU is trying to boost its growth and competitiveness but is stuck giving double‑standards.”
    • “Open up, embrace cooperation, and stop the protectivist mirage.”

In the end, it’s a high‑stakes face‑off: one side accusing the other of cheating, the other calling out hypocrisy. Both want the world’s attention, but they’re swearing at each other like a couple who caught the other in a cheap affair.

    Bottom Line

At this point, the EU and China are dancing around each other’s words, with Trump’s tariffs still slicking the floor. The real question is whether the partnership can survive or slip into a new kind of “China shock.” Either way, keep your eyes open – this diplomatic drama is far from over.

    Rare earths dispute

EU‑US Team Up, Watching China’s Rare Earth Game

When the EU’s top boss, Ursula von der Leyen, pressed “stop” on China’s latest rare‑earth clamp‑down, the room buzzed. The trick? China’s sudden move to limit the sale of seven of the 17 rare‑earth metals – the “alphabets of tech” that keep gadgets, batteries, and missiles humming. Von der Leyen called the action “alarming” and slammed the country for turning its monopoly into a bargaining chip and a strategic weapon.

    China’s Raw‑Material Supremacy

    • Controls ~60% of the world’s supply.
    • Owns ~90% of the refining and processing capacity.
    • Uses its grip to pressure rivals and shape the market.

Despite a slight easing of restrictions over the past few days, von der Leyen warned the threat lingers and urged the G7 to stand firm in nudging China back to the drawing board.

    Trump Joins the Conversation

President‑in‑caretaker Donald Trump was there, amid his ongoing push to curb China’s ascent as a high‑tech military juggernaut. He sided with the EU’s concerns, even echoing some of von der Leyen’s stern words. “Donald, you right – there’s a serious problem,” she told the American contingent, hoping the U.S. would help turn the fragile transatlantic alliance into a powerful wedge against Beijing.

    China’s Response

The Chinese Foreign Ministry shot back with a headline that sounded more like a movie tagline: “We’re acting responsibly, and we’ll speed up the approval of export licences.” They scoffed at the G7’s accusations, calling them “false” and “a smokescreen to hide trade protectionism.” The spokesperson even threatened that the G7’s market‑distortion claims were a guise to contain China’s industrial progress.

    Diplomacy Still on the Table

Still, Beijing kept its hand extended. Guo Duanzhang said China wants to “increase communication and coordination with the EU, properly handle trade differences, and achieve win‑win and shared prosperity.” He added, “We’ll remain opposed to any attempts that hurt China’s right to develop or upset the balance of interests.” There’s a bright‑side: an EU‑China summit is set for late July, offering a chance to reset the conversation without a full-blown showdown.

    What’s Next?

    • EU to keep the pressure on China’s rare‑earth sandbox.
    • US lawmakers to hammer away at China’s tech ambitions.
    • Live‑streamed summit in July – eyes on the boardroom.

In short, this is a high‑stakes tech chess game, and everyone’s watching the board, hoping the next move won’t be a self‑defeating blunder by any side.

How to Choose the Best Organic Coconut Water

How to Pick the Real Deal Coconut Water

1⃣ Look for the Gold Star

Certification is the first red flag.
Make sure that the bottle carries a USDA Organic seal (or its equivalent). That seal guarantees you’re getting water from coconuts that’ve gone without synthetic pesticides or fancy fertilizers.

    2⃣ Check the Ingredient Vibe

Open the label and keep an eye on the ingredient list.
The best organic coconut water should be just, “coconut water.”
If you see sugar, artificial flavors, or any additives, it’s probably not the pure juice you’re after.

    3⃣ Follow the Coconut Trail

Almost every good brand will outline where the coconuts come from.
Choose products that source from sustainable, ethical farms.
A strong supply chain often means higher quality and a happier planet.

    4⃣ Think About the Bottle

Packaging matters more than you think.
Prefer BPA‑free or glass bottles to avoid any chemical leaching.
This keeps the coconut water fresh, tasty, and truly “organic” in every sense.

    • Certification
    • No additives
    • Sustainable sourcing
    • Safe packaging

Follow these simple steps and you’ll sip on the real, unadulterated coconut water you’ve been craving—no sugar surprise, just pure, refreshing goodness.

Environmental Impact of Organic Coconut Farming

Why Organic Coconut Farming is a Green Hero

Picture a coconut farm that doesn’t rely on a chemical spray cookbook or a fertilizer manual written in Latin. That’s the vibe of organic coconut farming—a sustainable way to grow coconuts while keeping the planet happy.

    What Sets It Apart?

    • No synthetic pesticides – Swapping out the chemical “boom” for natural remedies means less toxic runoff to rivers and streams.
    • No synthetic fertilizers – Instead of feeding the soil with industrial noodles, farmers use compost, manure, and other green goodies that enrich the earth without the nasty side effects.
    • Farmers love the soil – Healthy soil feels like a cozy community where microbes get to thrive, and nutrients are recycled like a well‑run playlist.
    • More wildlife in the mix – Flowering plants, wild birds, and insects have a spa day on these farms, so the ecosystem stays balanced.

    Environmental Wins Not to Miss

When a coconut farm goes organic, it turns into a carbon‑sequestering super‑team. Trees and plants capture the CO₂ that’s chilling the air, and because the farm’s operations are low‑impact, those emissions are significantly reduced. It’s like a bodyguard for the climate, keeping greenhouse gases in check.

    Water Buddy

With organic practices, there’s less chemical runoff to contaminate freshwater. The farm’s water usage is smarter—rainwater is captured and conserved, and irrigation is more efficient. Think of it as a gentle tap that keeps the water budget tight.

    In a Nutshell

Organic coconut farming is more than just a trend; it’s a conscious choice that nurtures the soil, supports biodiversity, saves water, and helps the planet breathe a little easier. So next time you crack open a coconut, remember the green revolution happening beneath each husk.

Cooking and Recipes With Organic Coconut Water

Why Going Organic with Coconut Water is a Game‑Changer

Choosing organic coconut water isn’t just about gulping a tasty drink – it’s a smart move toward a healthier you and a greener planet.

    Beyond the First Sip

    • Health Boost: Packed with electrolytes, vitamins, and antioxidants, it keeps you hydrated and your body humming.
    • Eco‑Friendly Choice: Brands that focus on sustainability mean fewer chemicals, less waste, and a lighter footprint.
    • Kitchen Companion: Add a splash to smoothies, stir into oatmeal, or mix into post‑workout refills – it’s wildly versatile.

    Eco‑Buddies you’ll Love

When you pick a coconut water label that pledges to zero‑impact farming, you’re making a statement that matters. Those extra green stamps actually help protect ecosystems and support local communities.

Ready to Swirl the Tropical Vibe?

Drop it into your favorite morning routine or throw it on the side of your next protein shake. It’s not just a drink; it’s a daily reminder that a little conscious choice can ripple into big change.

  • Why the Oracle-OpenAI deal caught Wall Street by surprise

Why the Oracle-OpenAI deal caught Wall Street by surprise

This week, OpenAI and Oracle shocked the markets with a surprise $300 billion, five-year agreement, part of a surge of new business that sent the cloud provider’s stock skyrocketing. But maybe the markets shouldn’t have been taken by surprise. The deal is a reminder that, despite Oracle’s legacy status, the company still plays a major role in AI infrastructure.

On the OpenAI side, the agreement was more revealing than the lack of details suggest. For one, the startup’s willingness to pay so much for compute provides a measurement of the startup’s appetite — even if it’s unclear where the electricity to power said compute is coming from or how it will pay for it.

Chirag Dekate, a vice president at research firm Gartner, told TechCrunch it’s clear why both sides were interested in this deal. It makes sense for OpenAI to work with several infrastructure providers, he noted. It also diversifies the company’s infrastructure — spreading out risk among several cloud providers — and gives OpenAI a scaling advantage compared to competitors.

“OpenAI seems to be putting together one of the most comprehensive global AI supercomputing foundations for extreme scale, inference scaling where appropriate,” Dekate said. “This is quite unique. This is probably exemplary of what a model ecosystem should look like.”

Some industry watchers expressed surprise that Oracle was involved, citing the company’s diminished role in the AI boom compared to cloud rivals like Google, Microsoft Azure, and AWS. But Dekate argues that observers shouldn’t be so surprised: Oracle has worked with hyperscalers before and provides the infrastructure for TikTok’s sizable U.S. business.

“Over the decades, they actually built core infrastructure capabilities that enabled them to deliver extreme scale and performance as a core part of their cloud infrastructure,” Dekate said.

    Payment and power

But even as the stock market celebrates the deal, key details are missing and questions around power and payment remain.

OpenAI has made a string of infrastructure investment announcements over the past year, each one with an eye-popping price tag. OpenAI has committed to spend around $60 billion a year for compute from Oracle and $10 billion to develop custom AI chips with Broadcom.

Meanwhile, OpenAI said in June it hit $10 billion in annual recurring revenue, up from around $5.5 billion last year. That figure includes revenue from the company’s consumer products, ChatGPT business products, and its API. And while its CEO Sam Altman has painted a rosy picture of its future prospects in terms of subscribers, products, and revenue, the company is burning through billions of dollars in cash each year.

Power is another question, or more specifically where the companies plan to source the energy needed to run this level of compute.

Industry observers have been predicting a near-term boost for natural gas, though solar and batteries are arguably better positioned to deliver power sooner and at lower cost in many markets. Tech companies are also betting big on nuclear.

Despite market moving headlines, the energy impact of OpenAI’s anticipated growth isn’t entirely unexpected. Data centers are anticipated to consume 14% of all electricity in the U.S. by 2040, according to a report the Rhodium Group published yesterday.

Compute has always been a constraint for AI companies, so much so that investors have bought thousands of Nvidia chips to ensure their startups have access to the power they need. Andreessen Horowitz has reportedly purchased over 20,000 GPUs, while Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross rented access to a 4,000 GPU cluster (though maybe Meta owns that now).

But compute is worthless without power. To ensure their data centers remain juiced, large tech companies have been snapping up solar farms, buying nuclear power plants, and inking deals with geothermal startups.

So far, OpenAI has been relatively quiet on that front. CEO Sam Altman has placed several prominent bets in the energy sector, including Oklo, Helion, and Exowatt, but the company itself hasn’t thrown money into the space like Google, Meta, or Amazon.

With a 4.5 gigawatt compute deal, that may soon change.

The company may play an indirect role, paying Oracle to handle the physical infrastructure — something it has extensive experience with — just as Altman invested in startups aligned with OpenAI’s future power needs. That will leave the company “asset light,” something that will undoubtedly please its investors and help keep its valuation in line with other software-centric AI startups and not with legacy tech firms, which are burdened with pricey infrastructure.

  • Texas House Approves Redistricting Plan As California Advances Counter-Move

Texas House Approves Redistricting Plan As California Advances Counter-Move

With Democrats having ended their melodramatic two-week walkout intended to thwart a Republican congressional redistricting plan, the Texas House of Representatives swiftly approved the controversial new district boundaries on Wednesday evening. Enactment of the gerrymandering plan is now seemingly inevitable — but California is moving toward a remapping of its own that promises to offset the Texas gains seat-for-seat.

The Texas redistricting map sailed through by an 88-to-52 margin, right along party lines. With the Texas Senate having already approved a similar map on Sunday, a final version should be ready for Gov. Greg Abbott’s signature by week’s end. (For a detailed map of the new boundaries, zoomable down to street level, click here.)

The new map is expected to hand Republicans a net gain of five seats in the Texas US House delegation that will be elected in next year’s midterms. Texas Republicans currently control 25 of the state’s 38 congressional seats; the new map would likely give them 30 (a 79% share), all of which Mr. Trump carried by at least 10 percentage points in 2024. The GOP holds a narrow 219-212 majority in the U.S. House, with four vacancies, and party leaders see Texas as central to preserving their legislative agenda.

On Truth Social, President Trump hailed the map’s adoption by the Texas House, and spoke optimistically about the potential for similar moves in other red states. By combining gerrymandering with his push to eliminate mail-in voting and voting machines, Trump said “we will pick up 100 more seats, and the CROOKED game of politics is over.”

Democrats across the country have been howling about the Texas plan — assailing it as the latest threat to Our Democracy®. Meanwhile, conservatives scoffed at Texas state legislators’ choice of Illinois as their state to run to during their walkout, because Illinois arguably has the worst gerrymandering in America. In 2024, Democrats won 53% of the popular vote in Illinois House races, but took 82% of the seats (14 out of 17).

On Tuesday, former President Obama endorsed California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s pursuit of a ballot measure to redraw the state’s own districts, with a goal of moving five more districts into the Democrat column — thereby negating the Texas redistricting. Of the Golden State’s 52 US House seats, Democrats own 43 today. The new goal for the 2026 elections: 48 of 52 (92.3%). While California normally uses an independent redistricting commission, Newsom’s plan centers on putting a new map in front of voters in a special election on November 4. California lawmakers debated the legislation over several house on Tuesday and a vote is expected soon.

According to Politico and AP, here’s what Obama told fellow leftists at a fundraiser in Martha’s Vineyard:

“I believe that Governor Newsom’s approach is a responsible approach. I think that approach is a smart, measured approach, designed to address a very particular problem in a very particular moment in time.

[If Democrats] don’t respond effectively, then this White House and Republican-controlled state governments all across the country, they will not stop, because they do not appear to believe in this idea of an inclusive, expansive democracy…We cannot unilaterally allow one of the two major parties to rig the game. And California is one of the states that has the capacity to offset a large state like Texas.”

Obama characterized Newsom’s approach as restrained, given it doesn’t seek to “completely maximize” Democrats’ share of the California delegation, instead shooting for a mere 92.3%. (Gee, that sounds reasonable.) A Democratic pollster this week said 57% of California voters support the redistricting proposal; 35% oppose it and 8% are undecided.

While California and Texas are the top heavyweights, watch for action in other states too. Ohio is going through a redraw mandated by state law, while GOP leaders in Florida, Missouri and Indiana are talking about their own moves to boost Republican power on Capitol Hill. Democrats’ ability to keep countering GOP redistricting is limited by the fact that they’ve already gerrymandered the %$#@ out of their blue states

The Texas redistricting drive, which came at the urging of President Trump, was particularly controversial because most redistricting efforts happen following the end of a decade, informed by the latest decennial census. Mid-decade changes have happened elsewhere, however — Colorado chose to redraw its maps after the 2002 elections, for example. As with the latest Texas re-draw, Colorado was not compelled to do so by a court order springing from legal challenges to existing maps.

The adoption of the new Texas map is particularly bad news for Houston Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett: It moves her residence out of her 30th Congressional District. She said Republicans went so far as to axe her ask her to confirm her current address before they drew the new boundaries. Bad news for Crockett is good news for America:

Labubu could make $1B this year

Labubu is a plush monster toy, but it’s also on track to be a billion-dollar business.

This week, Labubu maker Pop Mart released its financial results for the first half of 2025, giving the public more insight into just how rabid the world is for this plush monster toy. Pop Mart’s Monsters series, which includes Labubu, generated around $670 million in revenue in the first half of the year, putting it on track to earn over $1 billion by year’s end. That’s a 688% increase year-over-year, even eclipsing the sales of Mattel toys like Barbie and Hot Wheels.

Sold in a mystery “blind box” format, these toys — sold by Chinese company Pop Mart — blew up in popularity internationally when BLACKPINK member Lisa confessed her obsession with the ugly-cute creatures. Then celebrities like Cher, Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Marc Jacobs, and others were spotted with Labubu toys, which sometimes hang off their designer bags as keychains.

These 10-year-old, mythology-inspired characters have now become as popular an accessory as a Telfar bag was in 2020, and they’re just as hard to get your hands on.

  • Eurostar New Early Boarding Policy Gives St Pancras Passengers 30 Minutes Head Start

Rallying the Rails: A Station Upgrade for a Skyrocketing Travel Surge

Why the Upgrade’s Needed: The station’s leaders have put together a multi‑step plan to make space for a future where the demand for international rail travel is slated to triple. With a flood of passengers looming, they’ve crafted a strategy that keeps everyone moving smoothly.

    Key Steps in the Plan

    • Extra Tracks & Platforms – More rails mean fewer bottlenecks and shorter wait times.
    • Smart Scheduling – Cutting‑edge tech to keep trains running on cue.
    • Fan‑Friendly Facilities – New lounges and eateries to keep passengers comfy and happy.

Think of it as building a traffic superhighway for train commuters. By the time the forecast hits, the station will be ready to greet a thrice‑as‑many crowd, turning the station from a bottleneck into a free‑flowing rail paradise.

Eurostar Flexes Its Timing Like a Goldfish

Picture this: you’re perched on a plush seat at St Pancras, the train whines in the background, and the clock is ticking. Instead of standing in the lobby like a deer in headlights, Eurostar’s letting you hop on the rails 30 minutes before the official departure. It’s a small tweak that feels like a giant comfort boost for the commando‑class commuters.

    Why the Move Matters

    • Say goodbye to the “hit the stairs” rush. By getting the train in-gear early, the platform gets a breathing space.
    • More room for smiles (and bag space). The crowd problem at St Pancras is real, and this trick helps smooth traffic flow.
    • Trip it up to a full trip. The plan is part of a three‑step strategy that aims to triple international rail demand next year.

    Three‑Phase Plan in a Nutshell

The strategy is like a coffee brew: start strong, stay robust, then finish top‑up. The phases focus on:

    • Boosting platform capacity.
    • Improving ticketing technology.
    • Re‑shaping passenger flow with a more relaxed boarding.
What’s Coming with the EU’s New Entry/Exit System?

October is the target date to roll out the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). Eurostar’s early boarding move is a pre‑flight check. It’s all about giving passengers a smoother, hassle‑free experience before the new passport‑sniffing procedures kick in.

Eurostar services are more popular than ever

St Pancras: A Bumpy Train‑Station Ride

As the world gears up for more cross‑border rail adventures, St Pancras is feeling the squeeze like a pizza box that’s just a little too full.

    Eurostar’s Record‑Breaking Week

    • Two of the fastest weeks ever: 136,000 passengers sprinted through the gates.
    • Year‑over‑year, the numbers jumped by 4.23 %, adding a whopping 101,000 travelers between January and June.

    The Congestion Conundrum

With a historic façade and limited interior, the iconic station turns into a crowd‑tug‑of‑war:

    • Long queues at check‑in, security and border control—like waiting for a new iPhone launch.
    • The departure lounge is so packed that standing room is the only option; you might want to last-minute practice your “bus‑stop selfie” pose.

What Eurostar’s Got in the Toolbox

To ease the chaos, the team is bumping up earlier boarding—think of it as giving travellers a heads‑up before the main parade.

    • Reduced queue time means fewer line‑pushing, fewer sighs, and a smaller chance of stampedes.
    • More people can board quickly, freeing up space for others to breeze through.

So, while the numbers are soaring, the efforts are rolling in to keep St Pancras from becoming a human pretzel. The goal? A smoother, happier train‑starting experience for everyone, and a break from that classic “wait, we’re all in the same spot” drama.

International rail travel from St Pancras projected to triple

St Pancras Gets a Mega Upgrade: From 1,800 to 5,000 Passengers an Hour!

Ever wondered how trains could feel like first‑class flights? St Pancras High Speed and Eurostar are stepping up their game, aiming to outshine even Heathrow’s shiny Terminal 5.

    Why This Matters

    • They plan to double passenger capacity “in phases” so the hub stays ready for the future.
    • The goal is to boost the hourly flow from 1,800 people (last year’s peak) all the way to 5,000 in a few short years.
    • By 2040, international rail traffic at St Pancras is expected to triple—from 11 million to a staggering 35 million travelers.

Inside the Mouthpiece: Richard Thorp Speaks

Richard Thorp, COO of London St Pancras High Speed, said, “We want to create a space that’s simply amazing for the traveling public.”
He also hinted at a playful competition with Heathrow, aiming to “outperform” the airport’s standards and promote a unique city‑center experience.

“Café to Café” is the New Trend

“We’re all about the ‘café to café’ journey,” Thorp added, implying that passengers will enjoy a seamless, delightful ride—like hopping from one café to another without missing a beat.

So strap in, folks! St Pancras is gearing up to make train travel as thrilling as a flight, with less turbulence—just more social distance (and maybe a croissant or two).

Eurostar prepares for the EU’s EES

Brexit, Borders, & the Battle of the Channel Tunnel

Long waiting times on the Channel have become a hallmark of the post‑Brexit era, and the latest tech twist is set to make the line even longer—at least until the human touch gets back in.

    Why the Quirky Queue Persists

    • Novelty of the New System: The European Exit System (EES) is replacing paper stamps with a digital “scan‑and‑swing” routine, which means rooks of scanners will replace the old “fulfil passport” doors.
    • Implementation Hurdle: Every EU and Schengen border needs a brand‑new set of hardware. Think of it like upgrading from a flip phone to a smartphone—lots of fiddling.
    • Stalled Space: At St Pancras, the excitement is felt twice—once in the expanded staff roster, once in the extra booths locating around the commuter maze that usually homes other rail operators.

St Pancras: The Sweet Spot for Innovation

Eurostar’s plan: Double the border handlers and double the manual booths, because there simply isn’t room for an up‑to‑49‑Kiosk blitz in the original hide‑away. They’ll pop up right where you’d expect the local commuter lines to have their “home base”. If you think that sounds absurd, remember the high‑speed railway (HS1) that already owns some of that real estate.

Getting the Human Factor off the Tracking Queue

In this miraculously modern era, Eurostar’s promise is simple: each user will inevitably rendezvous with a “human operator”. The newly minted “trained crew” will be around 24/7, no matter which side of the line you end up on.

Onwards to ETIAS: The Future of Fines & Fill‑Ups

The next chapter? European Travel Information & Authorization System (ETIAS). By late 2026, British and non‑EU passengers will need to sign up, pre‑fill some info, and pay €7—all before you even hop on a train. Think of it like a “ready‑for‑travel passport scrolling interface” where every traveler stamps a virtual seal of approval.

Ultimately, the promise is that the Channel Tunnel will remain the “most convenient getaway”, despite the buzz of the new digital vistas and the occasional humming of the future tech scaffolding. As all travellers will agree, a few extra minutes for a simple scan cannot dampen the thrill of arriving at London’s vibrant heart.

  • Google updates terms for app marketplace following EU pressure

Google updates terms for app marketplace following EU pressure

Google said it is making the changes following discussions with the European Commission.

Google will make it easier for app developers to direct Android users outside of its own ecosystem to make purchases and transactions, after regulators said the tech giant violated European Union law.
In March, the European Commission accused Google’s parent company Alphabet of failing to comply with EU rules that bar technology companies from unfairly steering users toward their own products or services.

The Commission said the company prevented app developers from informing users about “other channels for better offers” outside of Google Play, its app marketplace. It also said the company charged fees when developers got new customers that went “beyond what is justified”.
In response, Google said it will make changes to its terms, including reducing developer fees and adding “flexibility” to direct users from their apps to other links.

Google hit with Digital Markets Act complaint over user choice restriction

“While we still have concerns that these changes could expose Android users to harmful content and make the app experience worse, we’re updating our External Offers Program for the EU with revised fees and more options for Android developers, following DMA discussions with the European Commission,” said Clare Kelly, Google’s senior competition counsel for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA)
In a statement provided to Euronews Next, Kelly said Google Play and Android, Google’s mobile operating system, have generated more than €3 billion in revenue for European developers.

EU regulators have been scrutinising Google, Meta, and Apple since the Digital Markets Act (DMA) went into force in 2023. The law aims to rein in the tech giants’ gatekeeping power.
In April, the Commission fined Apple €500 million and Meta €200 million for violating the DMA.

  • Rare Martian Meteorite Sells for €4.3 Million, While a Young Dinosaur Wins the Crowd\’s Hearts

    When the Deal Made History

The auction was a first‑time event—one of those “track an object from the stars straight into somebody’s wallet” moments. People had been talking about the Mars meteorite for ages, but when a fresh‑from‑the‑basements Bachelor’s bone cache hit the table, the bidding went from polite to downright pandemonium.

Why the Mars Meteorite Shook the Crowd

    • Sonrific Scar: A rock that lands on Earth with a crater bigger than a playing card, technically a piece of the red planet.
    • Stellar History: Nobody sees a meteorite and thinks, “I can put that on my bookshelf.” But this one was the kind that tells tales of the universe.
    • Pricier Than Pluto: Even the dusty old moon got a second look—at least that’s what the sellers claimed.

    Enter the Dinosaur Skeleton

As soon as the bone skeleton—youthful, dripping with prehistoric charm—was hauled onto the selling platform, the crowd went from hushed to hysterical. Sellers placed the crushed bone on their “sell” sign, and the negotiation followed a pattern more like a game of poker than a business transaction.

It’s like you’re at a family dinner. Someone brings a cake from NASA, and then—whoa—midway through dessert, they present a real fossil bone.

Feel the Pulse of the Auction House

Some bidders were ready to pay a fortune, but others thought: “Is this a sign? I might get a house, I might get a dinosaur.” The lightning‑fast hand‑offers were as contagious as a bad flu in a small town. The rolling “who’s going to hammer this price up first” started a fresh frenzy. The base rate climbed, the calls were shouted faster than the front page of the *Wall Street Journal.

Wrap‑Up: A Fairy Tale for Modern Times

The auction wound up with a clean finish and a grateful crowd. The martian meteorite sold in record time, while the dinosaur skeleton quite literally sold the excitement of the entire room. In the end, you could say the event wasn’t just about money—it was about our love for the wild and our creaking curiosity.

Sotheby’s Showdown: Martian Meteorite Hits a Cool $5 Million

    What’s the Buzz?

    • Epic auction featuring rare rocks and relics.
    • Attendance likely requires deep pockets – just a hint that this is no ordinary bargain.
    • The headline winner: a 25‑kilogram slice of Mars that landed on Earth for a tidy €4.3 million.

The Rock That Shook the Sahara

Dubbed NWA 16788, this hefty meteorite was unearthed by a daring explorer in the Sahara Desert (Niger) back in November 2023. The official story from Sotheby’s? A colossal asteroid slammed the Martian surface, flinging this 25‑kg chunk on a 225‑million‑kilometer rollercoaster from Mars to our planet.

    Why It’s a Hot Ticket

Picture this: a concrete piece of another world, dusted in galactic grit, now up for grabs in a New York auction house. The competition was fierce, but the Martian marvel ultimately cleared the threshold with a whopping $5 million+– a price that makes the rest of the lot look like a bargain bin for collectors.

    What’s Inside the Martian Mystery?

    • Its early red‑planet origins give it a superstar status in the geology arena.
    • Transported a tremendous distance—from a rock‑throwing rock to a rare selling point.
    • It’s now one of the most iconic pieces in the auction world.

    Final Take

So if you’re eyeing a Martian meteorite at Sotheby’s, get ready for a lock‑step showdown on your wallet. Rare treasures like NWA 16788 remind us that the universe can be surprisingly pricey when it comes to the oldest rocks we can hold.

Martian meteorite said to be the largest piece of Mars on Earth

    Martian Meteorite Takes the Spotlight

Who knew a chunk of the Red Planet could send a house‑hold budget through the cosmos? A Martian meteorite, allegedly the biggest piece of Mars on Earth, just smashed the auction record, leaving everyone staring at their bank statements in disbelief.

From a Good Ginormous Price Tag to a Galactic Deal

Before the auction, the alien rock floated between a modest $2 million and a more ambitious $4 million. When the bidding war finally ended, the hammer dropped at an impressive $4.3 million—a figure that makes even the most fearless wallet wobble.

Adding the Extras: The Final Sale Sparkle

That’s not the whole story. After accounting for auction house honorariums, shipping, insurance, and all the little add‑ons, the final bill tipped to a staggering $5.3 million. This makes the meteorite the most valuable piece ever to change hands on the auction floor—talk about a rock‑star victory!

    Who Got the Cosmic Loot?

The buyer’s identity remains secret for now. The auction house is keeping the details wrapped tighter than a meteorite inside a moon crater. Stay tuned for the full reveal once that hush‑hush lifts.

Juvenile Ceratosaurus skeleton, of the Late Jurassic, Kimmeridgian Stage, approximately 154-149 million years ago

Juvie Ceratosaurus Cashes In Big – More Than $30 Million

The “Dino Mid‑Age” That Got the Crowd Going

Picture this: a 154‑million‑year‑old baby dinosaur‑skeleton turned into the hottest thing in a pre‑auction hall in just six minutes. Six up‑and‑coming collectors ran to tap a jaw‑dropping sum that blew past the paper duo of $4‑$6 million that everyone expected.

Why It Was a Smashing Hit

    • Rarity – Only four known Ceratosaurus nasicornis skeletons exist, and this one is the only juvenile.
    • Size & Style – Think Tyrannosaurus but in a smaller, younger package.
    • High Stakes – It’s the third‑highest sale for a dinosaur at auction.

Who Got It? Who’s It Going To?

The winning bidder’s name was kept under wraps, but the plan is to loan the skeleton to a museum or research institution as per Sotheby’s information.

Not‑the‑First, but Close to the Top

The record‑holder, a Stegosaurus named “Apex,” snagged a whopping $44.6 million last year. The Ceratosaurus followed up with impressive vibes and a bigger heart-attack hit in the bidding pit.

    Take‑away

    • Less drama, more fossil – the market for dinosaur keeps roaring.
    • Future scholars will get to know a rare, juvenile skeleton that was once a star attraction.
