BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – The high school football season kicks off in Brevard County on Friday night with a marquee matchup as the Cocoa Tigers travel to face the Merritt Island Mustangs.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., with Space Coast Daily’s Zach Clark and JC Meyerholz providing live play-by-play coverage.
Cocoa enters the season with high expectations, led by quarterback Champ Smith and wide receiver Tank White.
The Tigers are coming off a 16-7 victory over Bradford in last week’s kickoff classic, where kicker Keelan Gonzales proved to be the difference-maker by drilling three field goals. Smith and White will look to ignite the Tigers’ passing attack as they open regular-season play.
Merritt Island counters with a talented group of playmakers. Quarterback Kevin Verpaele leads the Mustangs’ offense, alongside versatile receiver and tight end Deshaun Thomas and speedy wideout Donterrius Robinson Jr. On defense, linebacker Jarvis Howell anchors a unit looking to set the tone early against one of the most explosive programs in the state.
The season opener marks not only the renewal of a fierce Space Coast rivalry but also an early test for two teams with postseason aspirations.
