BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Terry Spain and Zane Garcia of the Space Coast Daily–Friday Night Locker Room crew will be on the call Friday, September 5, from Billy Livings Stadium as the Cocoa Tigers (1-1) face the Vero Beach Indians (2-0) in Week 3 of the prep football season.
This is the 31st season of high school football coverage for the principals of Space Coast Daily and the Friday Night Locker Room – brought to you by Erdman Automotive, Health First, 4Ever Young of Merritt Island, and All Points.
TALE OF THE TAPE
Four years ago, these two faced off for the opening game of the season, and it was Cocoa who won an absolute thriller 42-41. That marked the beginning of a remarkable stretch for the Tigers, who have since reached four consecutive state championships, winning the last three.
Cocoa has opened its season with a bit of trouble, having survived Merritt Island’s upset bid, but then suffered a defeat last week at home against a talented Mainland team. The Tigers have many new faces on both sides of the ball and are still trying to find their rhythm.
On the other sideline, Vero Beach has tremendous confidence after going on the road and beating an excellent team in Buchholz (Gainesville) 28-24.
They did this without their five-star sophomore quarterback, Wonderful “Champ” Monds, as he is still out with an injury. The backup quarterback, Efrem White, a star wide receiver, has performed beautifully.
In Week 1, White stepped in for Monds and led the Indians to a 41-31 victory over Eau Gallie. Last week, against even better competition, White had 413 total yards and four touchdowns. The Florida State commit has filled the role of backup quarterback about as well as you could ask for.
The Indians are hoping to get star quarterback Champ Monds back as they face the three-peat state champions, Cocoa Tigers.
