2025 SPACE COAST SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

Paulette King: From Jamaica to the Court of Florida Tech

When Coach John Reynolds first spotted Paulette King in the summer of 1991, he knew he’d found a hidden gem. Though she was a Jamaican native who didn’t pick up a basketball until she was 19, King had already mastered the courts of volleyball, field hockey, and a track meet or two. That mix of athletic versatility made her a natural at the basketball court.

    Rapid Rise to the Top

    • Within her first season in Jamaica, Paulette was already among the island’s elite basketball players.
    • She then represented Jamaica’s national team for four solid years.
    • Her next stop? Phillips Junior College in Borger, Texas, where she tore through the season, racking up over 20 points and eight rebounds a game.
    • Her exploits landed her on both the all-conference and all-region teams.

The NCAA Rule: A Blessing in Disguise

Even though Paulette was a bona‑fide college star, her age—27—meant she faced a tricky hurdle. The NCAA’s Division I rule barred anyone over 24 from competing. In effect, this rule protected her playing career and saved Florida Tech.

    Reynolds Sees the Silver Lining

Coach Reynolds view of the age rule was a bit like a comic relief moment: “If Paulette wasn’t bound by the rule, she’d be awkwardly over the top of the roster. It was the perfect time for someone with her skill to step in.”

King’s Final Two Years with the Panthers

Armed with Coach Reynolds’ guidance, Paulette played her junior and senior seasons for Florida Tech’s women’s basketball team. The buzz was that she didn’t just play; she redefined the court for the Panthers, proving that it really isn’t about how old you are—it’s about how much heart you bring.

Congrats to Coach John Reynolds on a Legacy of Glory

After celebrating his 500th win, Coach John Reynolds has been the heart and soul of Florida Tech’s women’s basketball since the program’s humble beginnings. He’s got a knack for spotting talent and can’t shake off when he sees raw brilliance.

    Enter Paulette King: The One-in-a-Million

Back in May 1991, Reynolds met Paulette King for the very first time. He instantly knew she was a rare gem—an athlete who would light up the Panthers’ schedule in ways no one else could.

    What Made Her Stand Out?

    1. Championship POW! – She helped lead the Panthers to two Sunshine State Conference (SSC) regular‑season titles and the first two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances.
    2. Individual Accolades – 1991 and 1992 saw her named First‑Team All‑America and honored as SSC Player‑of‑the‑Year both seasons!
    3. Scoring Machine – She topped the conference in points per game twice (29.5 as a junior, 27.1 as a senior) – the two highest averages ever recorded.
    4. All‑Time Leader – Kenny logged 855 points senior and 813 junior, placing her 1st and 2nd in single‑season scoring. She also shot the most field goals (322 junior, 310 senior).

    Hall of Fame Honors

Paulette’s stellar stats earned her a place in multiple halls of fame:

    • Florida Tech Sports Hall of Fame
    • SSC Hall of Fame
    • SSC Silver Anniversary Team

Her legacy is a testament to what a visionary coach and a dedicated athlete can achieve together. The Panthers’ triumphs echo far beyond the gym floor, inspiring future generations with Paulette’s name etched in history.

Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2025

Stellar Spotlight: The 2025 induction class lights up the lunar‑grade history of Florida Tech athletics, and it’s hard not to feel the cosmic excitement as we celebrate these stellar performers. One star that shines brightest is the legendary Paulette King, whose journey with Florida Tech began in a moment of destiny—May 1991.

    When the Stars Aligned

Coach John Reynolds didn’t have to wait a lifetime to know that Paulette was destined for greatness. When he first laid eyes on her during a practice session, the entire setting felt heavy with possibility. He was instantly certain: “She’s not just any athlete; she’s a rare gem,” he whispered to his assistant.

    Paulette King’s Trailblazing Highlights

    • 1991–1995: Elevated Florida Tech to conference championship glory.
    • Team MVP: Earned the title three consecutive seasons.
    • Hall of Fame: Inducted in 2025, a testament to her unwavering impact.
    • Community Champion: Advocated for youth basketball programs across the Space Coast.

Beyond the numbers, Paulette’s presence on the court added a flavor of resilience and ridiculous‑good energy that made every game feel like a blockbuster movie—complete with highlight reels, fast‑breaks, and the occasional triumphant roar.

    A Toast to the Panache

Coach Reynolds remembers how Paulette stayed calm amidst the chaos of back‑to‑back games, turning the chaos into calm in a way that made everyone around her look like they could fly. This is exactly why the Hall of Fame will forever hold her place among the elite.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to witness a legend in action, ask any recollective fan—because Paulette King’s legacy is as electrifying as a space‑flight launch—and that’s how we write history.

Andi Sellers Dominated Women’s Athletics While at Satellite Beach High School from 1993 through 1996

Meet Andi Sellers: From Satellite Beach to the Hall of Fame

    High‑School Glory at Satellite Beach

Back in the early ’90s, Andi Sellers was the queen of the track and field pits at Satellite Beach High School. She didn’t just sprint; she ran the whole damn game, setting records that still whisper in the echo of the stadium.

    Degrees, Not Just Deadlines

    • Graduated from Florida Tech in 1993 with a Business Administration degree – because a good athlete knows how to balance books too.
    • Picked up a Criminology degree from Florida Atlantic University—classic mix: running fast and thinking fast.

Hall of Fame, Who? (Sure, the One)

By 1999, Andi had earned a spot in the Florida Tech Sports Hall of Fame. It’s not a myth; it’s a fact. The hall’s door has never been more open than for her.

    From Track to Screen

While a trading post would make most retirees comfortable, Andi dived head‑first into coaching and filmmaking. She’s both the mastermind of a winning team and the director of someone’s next favorite film.

    Quotes That Make You Nod

“FIT pushed me to be better in every aspect of life,” Andi says. “I was a real student‑athlete. It wasn’t all about basketball. It was about life, and I loved every minute of it!”

Coach Reynolds, still remembering those days, recalls that the drive Andi brought was electric. “Everyone fed off my energy and willpower,” she said. “I still like to think of myself as that person.”

    Today & Tomorrow

From coaching to the silver screen, her impact is louder than any finish line. Andi Sellers continues to inspire athletes and creatives alike, proving that a good track record can lead to great life stories.

Paulette King’s Story: From Court Dreams to Crystal‑Clear Goals

    College Days & Dual Degrees

    • 1993: Earned a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from Florida Tech.
    • Later added a Master’s in Criminology from Florida Atlantic University.

“FIT pushed me to be better in every aspect of life,” Paulette reflects. “I was a real student‑athlete. It wasn’t just about the game; it was about the whole experience—and I loved every minute of it!”

Eastern Florida State College Women Basketball Team Crush Daytona State From the Opening Timeout

EFSC Titans Make It 3 in a Row and Roll Past Daytona

It was another scorching Saturday for the Eastern Florida State College women’s squad, as the Titans swept away Daytona State with an 85‑38 wall‑opener, their third straight victory.

    Fast Start, Fast Finish

With a blistering 16‑4 lead after the opening quarter, the Titans’ offense had Daytona scrambling before the clock even hit 18 minutes. Every single player added to the scoreboard, proof that a good team is just a group of people who all know how to fire. The Titans stayed ahead, turning their first‑quarter 16‑8 advantage into a 36‑17 juggernaut by the end of the second.

    • ⏱ Nia Santiago lit the scoreboard in 2nd: 6 of 8 points in that quarter alone.
    •  Euro‑style shot‑crowding continued, but the Viera Elementary cheer squad brought the atmosphere to its highest point in season‑long attendance.

    Third Quarter Soul‑Crash

After the halftime show, the Titans kept firing. Claudia Jimenez and Marta Vieira dropped a quick hit of 3‑point magic right off the word. Jalei O’Neal then batted six straight layups, grabbing 8 of her 10 points before the quarter’s end.

    Final Rush and Florida‑Friendly Crowd

In the fourth nothing cracked the Titans’ pace. Karen Nimo went all‑out, snagging 10 points in the last stretch – a team‑high of 12 for the game – while the squad poured in another 31 points for a solid finish.

    39‑Game Streak Grows

The win was the 39th consecutive triumph at Titan Field House, showing the unstoppable march of the EFSC women’s basketball team.

    A Look Ahead

Next up: a home showdown against Miami Dade College on Wednesday night. The game starts at 5:30 p.m. and will stream live on WEFS‑TV (channel 9), or hit the typical Spectrum/DirecTV/Dish/AT&T feeds for a view from anywhere. The evening doubles as Alumni Game Day, complete with halftime festivities and giveaways—fair play, all the tickets are free.

That’s the line‑up: 39 straight, three wins in a row, 85‑38 kill, and a fan‑friendly finale. The Titans keep rolling, and the fans keep loving it.

  • Humanity Wins: Meet the Code Genius Who Outsmarted ChatGPT’s AI

Champion Alert: Pole Przemysław “Psyho” Debiak Dominates AWTF Heuristic Showdown

A Human Thunderbolt Shoots Past Machines

In a jaw‑dropping spectacle that felt like a high‑stakes chess match with a CGI twist, Pole Przemysław “Psyho” Debiak emerged victorious from the AWTF Heuristic Programming Tournament. This isn’t just another tech win; it’s a human triumph over AI, something that feels like discovering a unicorn in a spreadsheet.

    Why This Victory Matters

    • Unexpected: The field is packed with bots that can crunch numbers faster than a caffeinated math teacher.
    • Historic: He’s the ONLY human to outpace all AI competitors in a circuit designed for algorithms.
    • Inspired: It reminds us that sometimes a gut instinct beats cold calculation.

    The Scene in Summery

Psyho took the stage with the calm confidence of someone who knows the secret handshake to the AI’s cockpit. While the bots fired off a rapid succession of loops, he hovered, calculated, then struck with a human flair that left the audience in awe.

    Imagine the Crowd’s Reaction

The roar that followed his final line of code was a mix of disbelief and cheers—half “You’re human?!” and half “You’re a genius!.” His win wasn’t just a win; it was a moment of pure digital awe etched into the annals of programming history.

    A Quick Takeaway

Beware the future of competitor rosters: one day you might meet another “Psyho” who will write lines as if it’s a stroll in the park instead of a quantum battle. Until then, let’s give the human in the room a standing ovation.

A Polish Programmer Stuns the AI World

Meet Psyho – the Human Champion of 2025

Przemysław Dębiak, 42 and proudly nicknamed Psyho, just done something almost nobody thought possible: he beat ChatGPT in the top-tier AtCoder World Tour Finals 2025 (Heuristic Division) held in Tokyo.

Why This Feat Is a Big Deal

    • Only one human has managed to outscore a whole team of engineered algorithms in this prestigious contest.
    • He edged out 11 other competitors, including a specially crafted OpenAI bot.
    • The margin grew from a modest 5.5 % to an impressive 9.5 % over the AI—talk about a sweet victory.

    Inside the Competition Scene

The event took place in Tokyo last month, where programming talent from around the globe came armed with code, strategy, and a dash of nerves. Psyho, wearing his signature cool calm, managed to stay ahead as the dust settled on the leaderboard.

    Even His Friends Are Astonished

Stanislaw Eysmont, an innovation design guru and a good friend of Przemyslaw, shared his excitement:

“He’s a total legend—humble, charming, and thrilled that he didn’t just win—he actually beat OpenAI, a company he used to work for,”

—according to a sterling interview with Euronews Next.

What It Means for the Future of Code

    • Should we start calling it “Human vs. Machine” now?
    • Will code academies pick up Psyho’s techniques?
    • Will the next contest see him go for a 12 % margin?

One thing is clear: Przemysław Dębiak, the Polish coder known as Psyho, has etched his name into the annals of programming history—and left ChatGPT a little rueful for the first time.

Psyho: “Humanity has won (so far)!”.

    Full‑Speed, Full‑Throttle: The 10‑Hour Code Battle

When the clocks started ticking, it was game day for the coders. Over a solid ten hours, they dove head‑first into a maze of optimisation puzzles, racing to squeeze every ounce of efficiency out of a handful of lines of code.

    Debiak’s Blink‑of‑Hope Memo on X

After the final scores dropped, Debiak let out a candid howl of exhaustion:

“Back‑to‑back 10‑hour sprints and I haven’t slept more than… well, guess it’s 10 hours a day. I’m basically surviving on coffee and sheer will.”

    Humanity has won (so far)!

Yes, those words felt like a silent nod to every coder who fought the clock and still found time for a laugh.

OpenAI’s CEO Gives the Green Light

Even Sam Altman, the big boss at OpenAI, couldn’t resist a quick shout‑out:

“Good job psyho” – simple, heartfelt, and oddly cheerful.

A small caption, but a big boost for the team.

Stanislaw Eysmont’s Take on the Throne Race

Stanislaw, a resident champion of chaotic coding, summed it up in a brief but punchy reflection:

    • “10 hours of pure brainpower, no cheat‑codes, no ready‑made solutions, no cheat sheets.”
    • “Just a raw, real‑world optimisation challenge – there’s no perfect answer, only better answers.”
    • “In that charged arena, Przemek didn’t just beat the competition; he outpaced a very serious AI contender.”
    • “Today, man beats AI.”

It’s a campfire story now: humans, caffeine, and clever hacks outmagnetised the machines. The applause? Classic.

    The world’s most elite competition

Meet the Geek Elite: The AtCoder World Tour Finals

In the world of programming, there’s a tournament so revered that it’s practically a secret society of code wizards. The AtCoder World Tour Finals (AWTF) pulls together the 12 top‑rated programmers around the globe—no casual coder gets a pass.

    Why It’s a Big Deal

Unlike your everyday hackathon, this event isn’t about flashy UI or slick dashboards. It’s a pure clash of intellect, where challengers battle optimization puzzles that look like they’re written in a language nobody else can understand. Think algorithms, statistics, AI theory, and a splash of creative genius—all mashed into one roaster of pure logic.

    What It Takes To Win

    • Top‑tier knowledge of algorithms (yes, you’re talking about Dijkstra’s, dynamic programming, and beyond).
    • A knack for creative application—you’ll need to devise solutions that a machine can’t simply brute‑force.
    • Stamina to keep your brain firing when the problems keep getting tougher.
    • And, of course, the honor of being invited based on your worldwide ranking.
    Top 12 = Elite

Proof that this is the pinnacle of competitive coding: only the crème de la crème make the cut. Those 12 are the ones you’d expect to write code as if they’re coding in their sleep.

    Remember: There’s no Application Form

The entry is by invitation only. If you’ve been picked, you’ll know it; you’ve earned the right to join the front–row of programming royalty.

Secondary education, no full-time job, would-be DJ and poker player

  • Dębiak: The Polish Code Wizard Who Never Took a 9‑to‑5

    *

  • Born on July 28, 1983 in the seaside city of Gdynia, @Dębiak has turned the world of programming into his own playground. He’s snagged trophies at international contests, swoops through algorithms like a seasoned detective, and has even dipped his mind in AI.

    What Makes Him Stand Out

    “No Typical Job” Quote Marathon

During an AMA on the Polish site Wykop, he spilled the beans with some quirky life tidbits:

    1. “I’ve never held down a full‑time job.”
      — What a legend, right?
    2. “I’m a university drop‑out, which practically means I’ve got a secondary education.”
      — University? It was just too mainstream.
    3. “As a kid, I dreamed of being a superhero. Turns out, the cape didn’t fit.”
      — Guess the universe chose a different path.
    4. “No ‘life plan’ ever prickled up my mind, and honestly, I still haven’t got one.”
      — He’s loved it: ‘ Game dev? Actor? DJ? Poker pro?’ The list goes on.
    5. “I’m staying in Poland for now. No big moves on the horizon.”
      — Home sweet home.
    Why Winners Matter in Poland

For a Pole, winning these contests opens massive doors in the corporate world. Tech giants are watching closely, treating it as a gauge of who really can make code feel.

A Last Word from the Judgment Panel

“Eysmont sums it up best: these competitions are the ultimate litmus test. Who can make code think gets the spotlight.”

Space Coast Daily-Friday Night Locker Room Brevard High School Football Week 3 Rankings – Space Coast Daily

SPACE COAST DAILY IS YOUR NO.1 SOURCE FOR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A wild week of high school football games has the rankings shuffling quite a bit, as the weather was a significant factor in games across the county this past Friday.
This is the 31st season of high school football coverage for the principals of Space Coast Daily and the Friday Night Locker Room – brought to you by Erdman Automotive, Health First, 4Ever Young of Merritt Island, and All Points.

No. 1 – Eau Gallie Commodores

WATCH THE REPLAY: The Rockledge Raiders take on the Eau Gallie Commodores in Week 2 action.
Eau Gallie has now taken the new number one spot in the county after defeating Rockledge 23-14 a week ago. Despite not having their star quarterback, Joseph Allen, the Commodores have many weapons on offense that can get the job done. Freshman star X’Zavier Corbin has stepped up tremendously, scoring five touchdowns in the first two weeks of the season. They will need big contributions from multiple players to keep the offense rolling, however.

    No. 2 – Cocoa Tigers

Space Coast Daily-Friday Night Locker Room Brevard High School Football Week 3 Rankings – Space Coast DailyAfter barely squeaking past Merritt Island in Week 1, Cocoa faced a more formidable opponent in Week 2 in Mainland. With the 51-0 defeat on their minds from a year ago, the Buccaneers traveled to Cocoa looking to get revenge, and they did just that. Mainland led this game 19-0 for about three and a half quarters before the Tigers’ offense was able to produce points. The touchdowns came too late in the game as the Tigers fell 19-14. They will have to quickly work out their kinks as they head to Vero Beach this Friday.

No. 3 – Merritt Island Mustangs

WATCH THE REPLAY: The Melbourne Bulldogs take on the Merritt Island Mustangs in Week 2 action.
The Mustangs looked to solidify their legitimacy after nearly upsetting the three-peat Cocoa Tigers. Melbourne came to town trying to earn respect and pull off a big win, but the 35-point second-half effort from Merritt Island ran the Bulldogs out of the O-Dome. The Bulldogs led this game 14-0 at one point and were outscored 42-7 the rest of the contest. A huge statement for the Mustangs as they will travel to Deland to face another Bulldogs team wanting to upset them.

    No. 4 – Heritage Panthers

Heritage had an opportunity Friday night for a signature win while the season was still early. A talented Seminole High School team came to town and pulled it out on the road, 14-9. The Panthers fought hard and kept this one close, nearly pulling off the upset and showing a lot of potential in the process. Heritage will have another test on its hands and another chance for an upset win against Eau Gallie this Friday night.

WATCH ALL THE ACTION LIVE ON SPACE COAST DAILY TV!

    No. 5 – MCC Hustlers

MCC’s matchup with Trinity Catholic looked to be a great battle between two heavyweights, but the weather was a significant factor and unfortunately cancelled this one. The Hustlers are still looking for a monumental victory while trying to prove they are one of the best across Brevard County. They will host Saint Andrew’s this Friday and hope to improve to 2-0 on the season.

No. 6 – Astronaut War Eagles

Astronaut has slowly built a program over the past couple of years and is now proving they can compete across the country. After beating Gateway 21-0, they have another in-county matchup against Viera and will look to prove they are ready for any team they face. The defense will need to be great against a Viera team that has many weapons.

    No. 7 – Titusville Terriers

Titusville Terriers Defeat Holy Trinity 27-22 in Late Surge, Pick Up First Win of the SeasonRelated Story:Titusville Terriers Defeat Holy Trinity 27-22 in Late Surge, Pick Up First Win of the Season

Titusville lost a heartbreaker in Week 1, but got its first win of the season in another thrilling showdown with Holy Trinity. The offense was able to produce and will have to do so again this Friday as they have a big test traveling to West Orange. The Terriers have made the playoffs each of the last three seasons and will be looking to do so again, now under new head coach Matt Diesel.

    No. 8 – Satellite Scorpions

Satellite has entered the top 8 after not allowing a single point in their first three matchups of the season. Now, under legendary head coach Dan Burke, the Scorpions have started 3-0 for the first time since 2021 and are looking to make a name for themselves once again. The Scorpions are yet to play a Brevard County foe, but will see their first one in two weeks against their rivals, Cocoa Beach, in the Beach Bowl.

Brevard County High School Football Week 2 Scoreboard, Watch Replays and See Game Recaps

    ■ Eau Gallie 23, Rockledge 14: WATCH REPLAY HERE
This one did not start till about 8:15 p.m., as a one-hour and 15-minute lightning delay prevented the normal 7 p.m. start. Coach Sands credits his team for staying ready to play after the delay as the Commodores jumped out to a quick 16-0 start in the first 3:52 of this game. However, the Raiders would climb back into this one, answering the Commodores with 14 unanswered points over a span of three quarters. Freshman sensation, X’Zavier Corbin, was too much to handle, though, as his two touchdowns led the way to victory.
    ■ Merritt Island 42, Melbourne 21: WATCH REPLAY HERE
Merritt Island is coming off a dramatic loss a week ago and looked to get on the winning train as the Bulldogs came to town. Melbourne, conversely, dominated Cocoa Beach in week 1, 58-7, and went into this game looking to gain respect around the county. The weather was a factor in this one, and it took the Mustangs a while to settle in, but after trailing 14-7 at half, Merritt Island exploded with 35 points in the second half, winning this one by three scores.
    ■ Mainland 19, Cocoa 14
A season ago, Cocoa defeated Mainland 51-0; this year, the story was different. Last week, we saw Cocoa survive Merritt Island; this week was to be another test as the Mainland Buccaneers came to town. It was all Buccaneers for the first three quarters of this one as they jumped out to a big 19-0 lead. Cocoa would come back, but it was too little too late as the Tigers fell to 1-1 on the year, ending their nine-game win streak stretching from last season.
    ■ Palm Bay 13, Bayside 0
After a winless 2024 season, Palm Bay has finally broken the losing streak, and no better team to end it against than cross-town rivals Bayside. The Kevin Mays era officially started a week ago at Astronaut, and they lost, but they have moved on in a big way, winning this one in a shutout victory.
    ■ Seminole 14, Heritage 9
After a wild week 1 overtime win over Titusville, Heritage looked to solidify its legitimacy, facing a talented Seminole team. The defense played well, holding the elite offense to just two touchdowns, but the offense struggled to gain enough traction and put up points. The Panthers still put together a quality effort in the loss, as they will quickly move on from this one and look ahead to Eau Gallie next week.
    ■ Space Coast 54, St. Edward’s 8
Space Coast continues its winning ways with a huge margin of victory over St. Edward’s. Quarterback A’Zion Sandy and the offense look to be in midseason form early as they go into a bye week before facing Astronaut. The Vipers have been looking forward to the rematch against the War Eagles, as they dropped that game a season ago, 20-19 in overtime.
    ■ Deltona 14, Viera 6
Viera defeated Rockledge a week ago, 22-21, winning the backyard brawl in a crazy comeback. However, this week was a different story; the Hawks came out flat, and Deltona took advantage. Viera will have to delete this one from the memory bank as they face an up-and-coming Astronaut team next week.
    ■ Satellite 30, Freedom 0
The Dan Burke era at Satellite cannot start any better than it has. The Scorpions have outscored their first three opponents by a combined score of 87-0, the defense has been nothing short of perfect, and the offense is quickly proving how elite they can be. Satellite will go on the road for the first time this season as they travel to Oxbridge Academy before playing their first Brevard County foe in two weeks, rivals Cocoa Beach.
    ■ Cocoa Beach 27, Master’s Academy 20
Cocoa Beach could not have been pleased with how they opened up the season a week ago against Melbourne. It was a chance for the Minutemen to gain some respect locally, and they were blown out. This is a great win for Cocoa Beach as they try to get some momentum going. They will host Palm Bay next week in a matchup between two teams seeking their second win of the season.
    ■ Titusville 27, Holy Trinity 22: SEE GAME DETAILS
Titusville was looking to wipe its slate clean after taking a devastating Week 1 loss at home to Heritage. Holy Trinity was on the hunt for a statement win against a talented Terriers team, but Titusville was able to close this one out without any overtime. Titusville secured a big win and will look ahead to West Orange next week, as that game will be another significant test for the Terriers’ team, which is looking to earn respect around the county.
    ■ Astronaut 21, Gateway 0
The War Eagles started the season very well with a convincing 38-13 win in week 1 over Palm Bay. Traveling to Kissimmee in week 2 made for a nice little test for an Astronaut team still trying to prove how good they are. Next week, they will have another chance to establish themselves as they face the Viera Hawks. Both teams are looking to find their footing and make a name for themselves across the county.
    ■ Merritt Island Christian 48, Sports Leadership & Management Academy 6
Merritt Island Christian continues their dominating ways with a 42-point victory. The Cougars are looking forward to next week, as they will play Countryside Christian, whom they defeated in the postseason last year. Merritt Island Christian is in the hunt to win their second state title in the past three seasons.

The starting pitcher, Avery Velázquez, went five strong, not allowing a single hit and racking up 10 strike‑outs. She struck out at least one batter each inning—and even turned the spotlight over to the third‑inning comeback of a full side‑strike out that left the opposition gasping for air.

    Off‑Field Action

    • Isabel Otero set the tone: single, steal both second and third, and scored on an RBI single by Aracelis Jiménez.
    • Jiménez also progressed an extra base and crossed the line when Ashley Corazzini fumbled a ground ball, giving the Titans an early 6‑0 lead.
    • Velázquez, Emma George, Ashley Grieser, and Martha Jones dove into the action, getting on base and securing home plates in the same inning.

    Closing the Game

Ms. Otero and Camacho snagged two hits each; Grieser turned in a double and scored twice in this high‑octane opening. By the end, 19 runners had taken the field and 8 had found the bag, leaving the opposition empty‑handed.

Second Game – “The Can’t‑Stop‑Hit Hits” Blues

The Titans encountered a far different story on Friday night at the JUCO Kickoff in Madeira Beach. The clash against St. Johns River State College (SJRS) culminated in a high‑scoring, back‑and‑forth affair that ended 12‑8 in favor of the Vikings. EFSC now stands at 1‑1.

    Game Highlights

    • It all started with Ashley Corazzini blasting a two‑run homer to clinch an early 2‑0 edge.
    • She followed it up with a double in the second inning, then waited for Jessica Camacho to slot a single, cresting the score at 3‑0.
    • Jersey Rivers stormed back, hitting five homers and taking the lead to 3‑3 in the third.
    • After a dramatic Jessica Merk hit by pitch, Aracelis Jiménez walked home to ply the Titans to a 4‑3 advantage.
    • Then came a daring 2‑run homer in the 5th that switched things, followed by four remarkable runs for EFSC in the same inning. The Titans’ momentum surged when Emma George and Martha Jones duped the opposition with big hits.
    • However, SJRS poured back with consecutive homers in the 6th and an extra double burning the 7th inning, snapping the Titans’ burst.

    Player Spotlight

Ashley Grieser was one for the ages, gathering two hits, while Martha Jones offered the same nail‑biting output. This vivacious exchange underlined how unpredictable junior college softball can be; one minute you’re walking easy bases, the next you’re scrambling to keep up.

    What’s Next

    • Saturday morning will bring a showdown with Tallahassee State College; the Titans shoot for a quick comeback.
    • They’ll close out the weekend against Rend Lake College, another opener‑day fight that could be a savanna of excitement.

All in all, EFSC’s first half already tells a story of fire‑fighting drama—lessons in resilience when bright lights and restless rivals converge on that 5‑inch wide canvas.

  • How a drone and missile startup is helping Ukraine become the ‘Silicon Valley of defence’

How a drone and missile startup is helping Ukraine become the ‘Silicon Valley of defence’

The Ukrainian startup is developing long-range drones and missiles to take the battle to Russia.

When a Ukrainian-made drone attacked an ammunition depot in Russia last September, it showcased Kyiv’s determination to strike deep behind enemy lines – and the prowess of its growing defence industry.
The moment was especially gratifying for the woman in charge of manufacturing the drones that flew more than 1,000 kilometres to carry out this mission. For months after, Russia no longer had the means to keep up devastating glide bomb attacks like the one that had just targeted her native city of Kharkiv.

“Fighting in the air is our only real asymmetric advantage on the battlefield at the moment. We don’t have as much manpower or money as they have,” said Iryna Terekh, head of production at Fire Point.
Terekh spoke as she surveyed dozens of “deep-strike drones” that had recently come off the assembly line and would soon be used by Ukrainian forces to attack arms depots, oil refineries, and other targets vital to the Kremlin’s war machine and economy.
Spurred by its existential fight against Russia – and limited military assistance from Western allies – Ukraine has fast become a global centre for defence innovation. The goal is to match, if not outmuscle, Russia’s capabilities – and Fire Point is one of the companies leading the way.

    Related

‘Win-win partnership’: French companies to manufacture drones in Ukraine

The Associated Press was granted an exclusive look inside one of Fire Point’s dozens of covert factories. In a sprawling warehouse where rock music blared, executives showed off their signature FP-1 exploding drones that can travel up to 1,600 kilometres.

They also touted publicly for the first time a cruise missile they are developing that is capable of traveling 3,000 kilometres, and which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hopes will be mass-produced by the end of the year.
Even as US President Donald Trump presses for an end to the 3.5-year war – and dangles the prospect of US support for NATO-like security guarantees – Ukrainian defence officials say their country is determined to become more self-sufficient in deterring Russia.
“We believe our best guarantee is not relying on somebody’s will to protect us, but rather our ability to protect ourselves,” said Arsen Zhumadilov, the head of the country’s arms procurement agency.
Ukraine’s government is now purchasing about $10 billion (€8.7 billion) of weapons annually from domestic manufacturers. The industry has the capacity to sell triple that amount, officials say, and they believe sales to European allies could help it reach such potential in a matter of years.

Drone innovation grew out of necessity

Like most defence companies in Ukraine, Fire Point grew out of necessity after Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Despite pleas from Ukrainian military officials, Western countries were unwilling to allow Kyiv to use their allies’ longer-range weapons to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.
That’s when a group of close friends who were experts from various fields set out to mass-produce inexpensive drones that could match the potency of Iranian-made Shahed drones that Russia was firing into Ukraine with devastating consequences.

    Related

Russia ramps up drone production using teenage workers, video shows

The company’s founders spoke with AP on the condition of anonymity out of concern for their safety and the security of their factories.
By pooling together knowledge from construction, game design, and architecture, the company’s founders – who had no background in defence – came up with novel designs for drones that could fly further and strike with greater precision than most products already on the market. Their long-range drones had another benefit: they did not need to take off from an air field.
When Terekh, an architect, was hired in the summer of 2023, she was given a goal of producing 30 drones per month. Now the company makes roughly 100 per day, at a cost of $55,000 (€47,700) apiece.
The FP-1 looks more like a hastily made science project than something that would roll off the production lines of the world’s biggest defence contractors.
“We removed unneeded, flashy, glittery stuff,” she said.
But the FP-1 has been extremely effective on the battlefield.
With a payload of explosives weighing 60 kilograms, it is responsible for 60 per cent of strikes deep inside Russian territory, including hits on oil refineries and weapons depots, according to Terekh.
These strikes have helped to slow Russia’s advance along the 1,000 kilometre-long front line in eastern Ukraine, where army units have reported a sharp decline in artillery fire.

Ukrainian drone strikes hit defence industry facilities across Russia

“I think the best drones, or among the best, are Ukrainian drones,” said Claude Chenuil, a former French military official who now works for a trade group that focuses on defence.
“When the war in Ukraine ends, they will flood the market,” he added.

Ukraine is becoming the ‘Silicon Valley of defence’

Fire Point’s story is not entirely unique. Soon after Russia’s 2022 invasion, hundreds of defence companies sprouted almost overnight. The Ukrainian government incentivised innovation by relaxing regulations and making it easier for startups to work directly with military brigades.
Patriotic entrepreneurs in metallurgy, construction, and information technology built facilities for researching and making weapons and munitions, with an emphasis on drones.
The ongoing war allowed them to test out ideas almost immediately on the battlefield, and to quickly adapt to Russia’s changing tactics.
“Ukraine is in this very unique moment now where it is becoming, de facto, the Silicon Valley of defence,” said Ukrainian defence entrepreneur Yaroslav Azhnyuk.
“The biggest strategic asset that we have is that we have been at war with Russia for 11 years”.

A case in point: Fire Point had initially sourced navigational equipment for its drones from a major Western firm, but before long Russia was able to disrupt their effectiveness using electronic warfare. So Fire Point developed its own software to outwit the enemy.
Because defence companies are high-value targets for Russia, many operate underground or hidden within civilian centres to evade detection.
Although they are guarded by air defences, the strategy has the disadvantage of putting civilians at risk. Many Ukrainians have died in imprecise Russian attacks that were likely targeting weapons facilities.
Entrepreneurs said the alternative is to operate openly and face attacks that would set back the war effort.

Supplies of drones don’t last long

On the day AP reporters visited the Fire Point factory, there were dozens of drones awaiting delivery. They would all be gone within 72 hours, shipped to the battlefield in inconspicuous cargo trucks.
The Fire Point team receives regular feedback from army units, and the company has reinvested most profits toward innovating quickly to keep pace with other drone makers. Increasingly, those profits are being directed to develop a new, more potent weapon.

The company completed testing this year for its first cruise missile, the FP-5. Capable of traveling 3,000 kilometres and landing within 14 metres of its target, the FP-5 is one of the largest such missiles in the world, delivering a payload of 1,150 kilograms, independent experts said.
Because initial versions of the missile came out pink after a factory error, they called it the Flamingo – and the name has stuck.
Fire Point is producing roughly one Flamingo per day, and by October they hope to build capacity to make seven per day, Terekh said.
Even as Zelenskyy and other Ukrainian officials pursue ways to end the war, Terekh said she is skeptical that Russia will accept terms for a real peace.
“We are preparing for a bigger, much scarier war”.
